Introduction

This list is based on the timetable – Fahrpläne Österreich – dated from 10 December 2018 until 14 December 2019, unless otherwise shown. Standard abbreviations used are explained in General Information.

Map references for each route entry are given in parentheses ( ). References prefixed "ERA" refer to the European Railway Atlas Austria, Regional Series 2016, by M.G.Ball. In addition, the map reference for the line in the Schweers + Wall Eisenbahnatlas Österreich (2010 edition) is shown in italic.

Obscure services

Wien Meidling – St. Pölten – Linz Hbf

The Westbahn main line between Wien and Salzburg has been substantially upgraded. Fast lines, known as the Neue Westbahn, are in use all the way from Wien Meidling to Linz, except for a short section of around 12km to the west of St Pölten, which is however bypassed by the Guterzugumfahrung (freight avoiding line). For parts of the route they run adjacent to the old line, but there are substantial sections on entirely new alignments, including some long tunnels. The Neue Westbahn is in use thus:

  • Wien Meidling – Wien Hütteldorf: This section opened to passenger services in December 2014 and is entirely in tunnel. It is used by IC, ICE, Railjet/Railjet Xpress and Westbahn services to and from Wien Hbf and beyond. The connection from Wien Speising to Wien Inzersdorf currently has no booked services.
  • Wien Hütteldorf – St. Pölten: The section to Knoten Wagram, opened in December 2012, runs via a completely new route though Tullnerfeld. Between Knoten Wagram and St. Pölten there are four tracks in use on the same lateral alignment. There is a grade-separated junction at Knoten Wagram where the fast lines are in the centre at lower level, with the slow lines on outside at higher level, to allow access to the freight facilities on the north side. The entire route is used by most trains running non-stop between Wien Hütteldorf and St. Pölten and by those stopping only at Tullnerfeld.
  • Knoten Wagram – Knoten Rohr (Guterzugumfahrung St. Pölten): This freight avoiding line, which runs to the south of St. Pölten, sees occasional use by relief services; for details, see entry AT19/21 under 'Lines used on an occasional basis'.
  • Markersdorf a d Pielach (Üst Prinzersdorf 2) – Ybbs a d Donau: Bypasses all intermediate stations except Pöchlarn, where there are connections between the old and new lines. It is used by trains running non-stop between St Pölten and Ybbs a d Donau or calling intermediately only at Pöchlarn.
  • Ybbs a d Donau – Amstetten: Bypasses all intermediate stations and dives under the original route near Hubertendorf. It is used by trains not calling at any intermediate stations.
  • Amstetten – St. Valentin: Parallels the old Westbahn to St. Peter Seitenstetten, but then runs via an entirely new route to St. Valentin except through St. Johann where the new and old tracks are adjacent. There are connections between the old and new lines at St. Peter Seitenstetten and at St. Johann. This section of the Neue Westbahn is used by trains not stopping between Amstetten and St. Valentin.
  • St. Valentin – Linz: The Neue Westbahn follows a separate route from St. Valentin to Asten-St. Florian and then parallels the old main line into Linz. It is used by trains between St Valentin and Linz Hbf not booked to call at any of the intermediate stations.

Tulln avoiding line: Tulln Donaubrücke – Tulln Stadt

The route via Wels Vbf (Verschiebebahnhof / marshalling yard) is used every day by one overnight service:

It was reported that local services between Wels and Marchtrenk were to use this route between 20 and 24 June; however this did not happen.

Lambach avoiding line: Gunskirchen (Abzw Umfahrung Lambach) – Lambach Markt

A tunnel avoiding Lambach is used by all trains between Wels and Attnang-Puchheim not booked to call at Lambach. These comprise all IC, ICE, Railjet, Westbahn and Nightjet services. All local R and REX services run via Lambach.

Wörgl Kundl (Abzw Wörgl 2U) – Volders-Baumkirchen (Abzw FW2) (Neue Unterinntalbahn)

This line, opened in December 2012, is mostly in tunnels, parallel with the old Westbahn. It is normally used in its entirety by trains running non-stop between Wörgl and Innsbruck, these including most Railjet Xpress services. Fast trains only stopping at Jenbach between Wörgl and Innsbruck normally use crossovers west of Jenbach station, at Abzw Jenbach 2U, to and from the Neue Unterinntalbahn, but run via the old Westbahn between Jenbach and Wörgl. These include all EC services.

Bruck an der Mur avoiding line: Pernegg (Bruck Übelstein) – Oberaich (Bruck Stadtwald)

This east to west curve enables trains to run between Graz and Leoben without reversal at Bruck an der Mur. It is used by services shown in table 600 as not calling at Bruck an der Mur. These comprise IC/EC services to/from Graz, generally every two hours, and REX services between Graz and Leoben in the morning and evening peaks.

St. Michael avoiding line: Leoben Hbf (St. Michael Ost) – Kraubath (St. Michael West)

This east to west chord of the St. Michael triangle enables trains to run between Leoben and Knittelfeld without reversal at St. Michael station. It is used by all trains between Leoben and Knittelfeld or St Veit a d Glan not booked to call at St. Michael.

St. Michael – Kraubath (St. Michael West)

[600] (ERA 131A4; 65C2) AT19/9

This north to west chord of the St. Michael triangle is used by the hourly local services between Bruck/Mur or Mürrzuschlag and Unzmarkt or Friesach, which reverse in St Michael station. There are no through trains between the Selzthal line and Knittelfeld.

Wien Penzing – Wien Speising (Abzw Wien Hütteldorf 1)

This east to south curve connects Wien Westbf with the Wien southern ring line to Meidling and Kledering. In December 2015 all remaining Railjet, IC, ICE and overnight trains commenced running to and from Wien Hauptbahnhof on the Neue Westbahn route and, as a result, the curve now has only a few peak hour passenger services.

Wien Speising (Stw Maxing) – Wien Meidling (via Flohberg Tunnel)

This is the more direct of the two routes between Speising and Meidling, and provides a link to the north side of Meidling station. It is used by the S80 [Unter Purkersdorf - ] Hütteldorf - Wien Hbf - Wien Aspern Nord S-Bahn service (service hourly, increasing to half-hourly in peaks) and trains shown under Wien Penzing – Wien Speising.

Wien Matzleinsdorfer Platz – Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 3 and 4)

The S80 [Unter Purkersdorf - ] Hütteldorf - Wien Hbf - Wien Aspern Nord S-Bahn service uses this link to access platforms 3 and 4 at Wien Hauptbahnhof (service hourly, increasing to half-hourly in peaks).

Wien Meidling – Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 4 to 12)

The main running lines pass either side of Wien Matzleinsdorf rolling stock maintenance facility at surface level. However, to enable westbound trains to the Inzersdorf Ort line (for Donauländebahn and Pottendorfer Linie) from Hauptbahnhof platforms 4 to 7 to avoid conflictions with inbound trains to the higher numbered platforms, a flyover crosses above the maintenance facility. It rejoins the inbound alignment at surface at 1.7km, to reach Wien Meidling platforms 7 and 8. This flyover is used by:

  • the S60 Bruck an der Leitha - Wien Hbf - Pottendorf-Landegg - Wiener-Neustadt S-Bahn service (table 511)
  • the REX [Bratislava Petržalka -] Wien Hbf - Deutschkreutz service (table 512).

Both the above are hourly SSuX, alternate hours SSuO. In the opposite direction, these services use the surface level tracks.

Wien Stadlau (Erzherzog-Karl-Straße south junction) – Süßenbrunn (Abzw Süßenbrunn Ost)

Since the re-routeing in December 2012 of S-Bahn services to run via Floridsdorf, this line is only used by the hourly non-stop trains between Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 3 - 12) and Břeclav and beyond. As there is now right-hand running, northbound trains use the direct curve at Süßenbrunn and southbound ones use the spur on to the flyover line from Mistelbach. There are no longer any services over the south-to-west curve.

Wien Leopoldau (Süßenbrunn West) – Gerasdorf

[902] (ERA 133C5; 105C2) AT19/15

These west-to-north curves at Süßenbrunn are used by frequent S2, S7 and R services between Wien Hbf and Mistelbach or Laa an der Thaya via Floridsdorf. With right-hand running, the direct curve is used by trains heading towards Wien and the curve to the flyover line by those heading towards Mistelbach.

There are no scheduled direct services over the north-south line between Gerasdorf and Süßenbrunn Mitte, but northbound trains over the west-to-north curve and Wien-bound trains over the south-to-east curve (AT19/14) together cover at least one of the two lines for the whole length of the north-south section.

Villach (Hbf Ostbahnhof) – Villach Westbahnhof (via high level line)

Most local services to Rosenbach depart from Villach Hbf platform 8, which is situated on the high level route to Westbahnhof. These services can be identified from the ÖBB journey planner. Normally only westbound services use this route, but occasionally services to St Veit a d Glan via Feldkirchen have used it. Click on the thumbnail for a full size map.

Wien Meidling (Inzersdorf Ort) – Kledering

The transfer of International services from Wien Westbahnhof to Wien Hauptbahnhof means that this link line is used by only a few local trains shown in table 720 as calling at Wien Meidling and Kledering without intermediate calls.

Unter Purkersdorf – Wien Hütteldorf

There are two routes between these stations - a route in tunnel on the northern side of the formation via Abzw. Knoten Hadersdorf, and a surface route via Wien Weidlingau. REX services between Wien Westbahnhof and St. Pölten, which are not booked to call at intermediate stations between Purkersdorf Zentrum and Wien Hütteldorf, use the tunnel route whereas S80 services to/from Tullnerbach-Pressbaum or beyond and peak-time S50 trains to/from Unter Purkersdorf use the surface route. The tunnel route joins the Neue Westbahn from Tullnerfeld at Abzw. Knoten Hadersdorf. Services between the Neue Westbahn and Wien Westbahnhof (Westbahn and semi-fast Amstetten trains) use the same eastern ramp at Wien Hütteldorf.

Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 3 to 12) – Wien Simmering

All departures to the line via Wien Simmering use a dive-under at the east end of the Hauptbahnhof, to avoid conflicts with incoming trains on the Ostbahn. The dive-under has two separate inward ramps - one from the lower numbered platforms, the other from the higher numbered platforms. The former tends to be used by the S80 [Unter Purkersdorf or Hütteldorf] - or Wien Hbf starters - Wien Aspern Nord S-Bahn service (service half-hourly), the latter by other services - particularly the longer distance trains (including the outbound trains using the Wien Stadlau – Süßenbrunn line) - from platforms 9 to 12. Planned platform use can be derived from the ÖBB journey planner but is susceptible to change so departure screen information is the best guide. In the opposite direction, these services use the surface level tracks.

Korneuburg – Ernstbrunn

(ERA 64/B4; 24A2-14A3) AT19/20

One return trip, operated by Regiobahn and branded as Nostalgieexpress Leiser Berge, runs on this branch every Saturday from 4 May to 26 October. Trains run through from Wien Praterstern, departing at 09.14, and return from Ernstbrunn at 16.45. Further details are on the Regiobahn website.

Obscure services: Lines used on an occasional basis

Neue Westbahn: Knoten Wagram – Knoten Rohr (Guterzugumfahrung St. Pölten)

(ERA 126A3 - 125C3; 22A3 - C3) AT19/21

This freight avoiding line, which runs mainly in tunnel on a completely new alignment to the south of St. Pölten, opened in December 2017. It is used occasionally to allow relief trains to be overtaken. These have generally been westbound services but one service in each direction is booked to run in late June 2019:

Bregenz avoiding line: Hard-Fussach (Lauterach West) – Wolfurt (Lauterach Süd)

This curve enables trains to run between St. Margrethen and Feldkirch without reversal at Bregenz. It was used in July 2018 by an hourly S3 Lauterach [Süd] - St. Margrethen service due to single line working on the normal route to Bregenz. It is also used for diversions when the Buchs SG – Feldkirch line is closed for engineering works, which usually occurs in late April and early May. Diverted trains may also use the Romanshorn avoiding line in Switzerland.

Wampersdorf – Gramatneusiedl

(ERA 126B2 & 133C1; 36B3-2) AT19/23

This line is used when the direct line between Wampersdorf and Wien Meidling via Achau [tables 511 and 512] is blocked by engineering works (which should be found from the ÖBB engineering work page). Diverted trains also use Wien Meidling - Inzersdorf Ort - Kledering at least in part, with northbound trains using route AT19/23A, below.

Trains are being diverted over this line until 1 September 2019.

Lanzendorf-Rannersdorf – Wien Meidling via Abzw. Zvbf Ost and Oberlaa

[511,512] (ERA 126B2; 107C4 not all shown) AT19/23A

This line enables trains from Ebenfurth towards Wien which are diverted via the Wampersdorf - Gramatneusiedl line to reach the Kledering - Inzersdorf Ort - Wien Meidling line at Oberlaa. This avoids the need to cross the Ostbahn on the level to use the curve from Kledering. There is a new connection between Lanzendorf-Rannersdorf and Abzw. Zvbf Ost, on the loop line to the Wolfsthal line from Wien Zvbf (marshalling yard), then the route uses the flyover over the Ostbahn towards Oberlaa. Diverted trains are booked to use the Inzersdorf Ort avoiding line, but may run through the former station if the avoiding line is not available.

Diverted trains from Wien towards Ebenfurth use the direct curve to Kledering on the Inzersdorf Ort - Kledering route instead.

Trains are being diverted over this line until 1 September 2019.

Innsbruck avoiding line: Volders-Baumkirchen (Abzw Fritzens-Wattens 2) – Inntaltunnel – Unterberg-Stefansbrücke (Abzw Innsbruck 1; Gärberbach)

(ERA 63/B1; 60B-60C) AT19/24

This line via the Inntaltunnel, which is normally banned to passenger trains, was opened in 1994. It may be used when there is engineering work at Innsbruck Hbf, for diversions of EC services between München and Italy via the Brenner line. This occurred for the first time from July to September 2018.

Salzburg avoiding line: Salzburg Maria Plain (Abzw. Hallwang-Elixhausen 3 (Kasern)) - Salzburg Gnigl Vbf - Salzburg Parsch (Salzburg Gnigl)

(ERA 62C4; 30C and 102A) AT19/25

This curve allows trains between Wels and the Bischofshofen line to avoid Salzburg Hbf. The overnight services between Wien and Bregenz are booked to run this way on certain dates, calling at Salzburg Süd instead of Hbf. A few daytime relief trains were also booked to run over this line in May. The daytime trains also used the St. Pölten avoiding line (AT19/21).

As a result of engineering work south of Brenner/Brennero in August 2018 trains EC86/87 between München Hbf and Venezia Santa Lucia were planned to be diverted by this route and Zell am See, with an unadvertised stop for reversal at Schwarzach St Veit. The work was however cancelled at short notice. This entry will be updated if revised dates become known.
