Owing to the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in the withdrawal of all passenger trains to and from Crimea, and Russia's desire to create a permanent link to Crimea, contracts have been awarded for the construction of a multipurpose road/rail bridge over the Strait of Kerch. The bridge will be 19 km long, with a four lane road and double track railway. The initial plan had to be modified to take into account the weight of trains. Completion was scheduled for the end of 2018 but has now been delayed to the end of 2019.
