As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the ferry service between Sassnitz Fährhafen and Trelleborg has been withdrawn, apparently permanently, from 14 March 2020. In recent years the ferry has been used principally by passengers, with freight going via Rostock and other routes.
Until late August 2019, this branch was used to connect with the train-ferry to/from Trelleborg by the overnight trains which ran during the summer between Berlin Hbf and Malmö C.

A daily train service between Berlin Hbf and Malmö C was advertised to operate on the following dates, but can no longer do so via Sassnitz:
Services in 2020 are cancelled entirely because of cross-border travel restrictions and uncertainty over ferry operations caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021 the operator of the night trains, Snälltåget, plans to run them via Denmark and Hamburg instead, so this line has lost its passenger services.

* Northbound (''D300''): Depart Berlin Hbf 19:00 on [12 April CANCELLED], 3 and 24 May, 14, 16 and 18 June then daily from 22 June - 30 August. Also from Berlin Hbf at 11:00 on 17 May (''D304'')
This entry will accordingly be deleted at the end of 2020.
* Southbound (''D301''): Depart Malmö C 17:00 on [4 and 8 April CANCELLED], 13 and 20 May, 13, 15 and 17 June then daily from 21 June - 29 August;

On occasional dates in 2020 the train was expected to be diverted via Rostock (see below). When international rail traffic can resume it is possible that it will run via Rostock, but this is not certain. For further information see the [http://www.snalltaget.se/en/destinations/berlin Snälltåget] site.

'''The only northbound journey by this route has now been cancelled owing to the coronavirus outbreak.''' At the time of writing (mid-March), both southbound journeys are still shown as running on the [https://www.snalltaget.se/ Snälltåget] website. The site should be checked for up-to-date information on which, if any, trains will actually run.
Because of cancellations and retimings of the Sassnitz to Trelleborg train ferry, this route, together with the Rostock to Trelleborg ferry, was planned to be used as an alternative in 2020 for the night services between Malmö and Berlin.

This connection from the Berlin - Rostock main line to the train-ferry berth at Rostock Seehafen is to be used by the night train between Berlin and Malmö on a few dates in 2020 instead of the route via Sassnitz (DE20/103, above), with the train ferry being used between Rostock and Trelleborg.

Introduction

This list is based on the timetable dated from 15 December 2019 to 12 December 2020, unless otherwise stated. Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information. Map references relate to the 2017 issue of the Schweers+Wall Eisenbahnatlas Deutschland.

Obscure services

Waren (Müritz) (Lalendorf Ost) – Plaaz

[205 Nord] (15B3-15C3) DE20/101

This route is normally used by IC and ICE trains between Berlin and Rostock, which are not booked to call at Güstrow. RE5 services run via Güstrow so do not use this route.

From 8 March, a two-hourly IC service operates daily between Dresden Hbf, Berlin Hbf and Rostock Hbf via this route. Northbound departures are at 58 minutes past each even hour from Waren (Müritz) between 08:58 and 20:58, and southbound trains are at 21 minutes past each odd hour from Rostock Hbf from 06:21 until 18:21, plus 20:23 FSX.

Additional long-distance IC and ICE services operate over this route, particularly in the summer months. These are shown in Table 205 Nord of the DB Kursbuch.

Stralsund Rügendamm – Wüstenfelde (Abzw Srg)

[190] (6A1) DE20/102

This east to south curve is used by trains between the island of Rügen and the Pasewalk or Neubrandenburg lines, if not booked to call at Stralsund Hbf.

The overnight trains between Malmö and Berlin mostly ran this way until 2019, although they occasionally reversed at Stralsund Hbf. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, they are not running at all in 2020. In 2021 they are planned to run via Padborg instead so this line will no longer see regular passenger use.

The curve is used occasionally by excursions. Look particularly for trips from Berlin to the Störtebeker Festspiele, held on Rügen each year.

Lietzow (Abzw Borchtitz) – Sassnitz Fährhafen [Mukran]

(7C2) DE20/103

Until late August 2019, this branch was used to connect with the train-ferry to/from Trelleborg by the overnight trains which ran during the summer between Berlin Hbf and Malmö C.

This entry will accordingly be deleted at the end of 2020.

Kavelstorf - Rostock Seehafen

(123A1-B4) DE20/104

Because of cancellations and retimings of the Sassnitz to Trelleborg train ferry, this route, together with the Rostock to Trelleborg ferry, was planned to be used as an alternative in 2020 for the night services between Malmö and Berlin.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, all trains between Malmö and Berlin in 2020 have now been cancelled. In 2021 they are planned to operate via Denmark and Hamburg instead of using a train ferry.

Therefore this route did not see passenger services at all in 2020 and this entry will accordingly be deleted at the end of the year.
