There is a grade-separated junction south of Bitterfeld between the Leipzig and Halle lines.  A flyover carries the track towards Leipzig over the line to Halle. Certain ''S8'' trains from Bitterfeld to Halle (Saale) use platforms 4, 5 or 6 on the west side the station and run via a connection between the Leipzig flyover and the Halle main line at Abzw Roitzsch. These comprise Dessau or Magdeburg to Halle services, generally at 47 minutes past every even hour from Bitterfeld, and services starting at Bitterfeld, generally at 16 minutes past every odd hour.

Goods lines from Halle (Saale) Gbf run to the east of the main line to Merseburg and cross over it to join the main line to Nordhausen at Abzw Halle-Kasseler Bahn.  This route is being used by the half-hourly ''S7'' services to and from Halle-Nietleben and the two-hourly ''RE19'' trains to Leinefelde and from Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe while station reconstruction is under way. These services arrive and depart from temporary Platform 13a to the east of Halle (Saale) Hbf.  The electronic Kursbuch timetable 590 and timetable leaflets clearly distinguish trains using platform 13a.

The Halberstadt to Halle and Magdeburg to Sangerhausen lines run parallel through Sandersleben.  They use different platforms and normally operate independently, but there are connections between the two lines north and south of the station. Both connections are used by just one train in the current timetable to facilitate a passing movement. Click on the thumbnail for a full size diagram

Introduction

This list is based on the timetable dated from 10 December 2017 to 8 December 2018, unless otherwise stated. Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information. Map references relate to the 2014 issue of the Schweers+Wall Eisenbahnatlas Deutschland.

Reconstruction of Halle (Saale) Hbf and lines in the vicinity is causing significant alterations to train services. The following details reflect planned changes, as far as possible. However, users should be aware that there could be further variations, including to planned diversions, as work progresses.

Obscure services

Bitterfeld - Roitzsch (Kr Bitterfeld) (Abzw Roitzsch)

[501.8] (58B1) DE19/201

There is a grade-separated junction south of Bitterfeld between the Leipzig and Halle lines. A flyover carries the track towards Leipzig over the line to Halle. Halle (Saale) Hbf - Halle Rosengarten (Abzw Halle-Kasseler Bahn)

[501.7, 590] (130B1-130B2) DE19/203

Goods lines from Halle (Saale) Gbf run to the east of the main line to Merseburg and cross over it to join the main line to Nordhausen at Abzw Halle-Kasseler Bahn. This route is being used by the half-hourly S7 services to and from Halle-Nietleben and the two-hourly RE19 trains to Leinefelde and from Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe while station reconstruction is under way. These services arrive and depart from temporary Platform 13a to the east of Halle (Saale) Hbf. Kursbuch timetables 501.7 and 590 and timetable leaflets clearly distinguish trains using this platform.

Stiege Loop (HSB)

[333] (56B1) DE19/205

A balloon loop at Stiege enables trains to run between the Alexisbad and Eisfelder Talmühle lines without reversing. Passenger trains sometimes traverse this loop but there have been regular occurrences of locomotives running round the loop 'light engine' and of railcar drivers changing ends.

Obscure services: Lines used on an occasional basis for engineering work diversions

Halle-Angersdorf - Merseburg Hbf

[580] (130A2-130B3) DE18/231

When the railway between Halle and Merseburg is blocked for engineering work,RB trains are diverted via Halle-Angersdorf and Buna Werke. Long-distance trains not routed via the Schnellfahrstrecke to and from Erfurt are diverted via Nordhausen. This happened between 26 March and 20 May 2017.

Halle-Ammendorf - Leipzig/Halle Flughafen (Halle-Kanena)

[501.5, 580] (130B2-130C2) DE18/232

This south to east curve enables trains to run between the Merseburg and Leipzig lines without reversing at Halle (Saale) Hbf when there is engineering work at Halle (Saale) Hbf or on the Leipzig - Großkorbetha via Markranstädt line. This curve was used between 11 September and 22 November 2017.

Magdeburg-Sudenburg - Magdeburg-Buckau

[310, 340] (123C3) DE18/233

This west to south curve enables trains to run between the Helmstadt and Schönebeck lines without reversing at Magdeburg Hbf. The following trains are diverted via this route, calling at Magdeburg-Buckau instead of Magdeburg Hbf, from 4 March 2018, for about a year.

IC2031 Hannover Hbf - 06:32 Helmstedt - Leipzig Hbf
IC2033 Emden - 08:32 Helmstedt - Leipzig Hbf
IC2434 Leipzig Hbf - 06:58 Magdeburg-Buckau - Emden
IC2034 Leipzig Hbf - 16:58 Magdeburg-Buckau - Norddeich
