Just west of Grimmenthal station, the Meiningen – Themar line crosses over the Schweinfurt – Suhl line, each route having its own platforms at Grimmenthal. To enable through running between Meiningen and Suhl, there are connecting spurs at both west and east ends of the station. In general, the western spur is used by trains from Meiningen to Zella-Mehlis or Erfurt whereas those from Erfurt or Zella-Mehlis to Meiningen use the eastern spur.
All services between Naumburg (Saale) and Jena which used this west to south curve via Großheringen station were re-routed via the direct avoiding curve at the December 2018 timetable change. However because of engineering work, ''RB25'' services between Naumburg (Saale) Hbf and Saalfeld (Saale) are diverted via Großheringen station (reverse) and this curve between 1 June and 14 July 2020.
