Owing to the size and complexity of the German railway system, the Obscure Services listing is subdivided by Land (Province). Berlin and Bremen are separate Länder, but it is convenient to include them with Brandenburg and Niedersachsen respectively. Details of Other Sparse Services and Deletions since previous edition can be found at the end of this document.

DB operates a significant number of AutoZüge, all of which only convey passengers with cars. These trains are are listed separately at AutoZüge.

This list is based on the timetable in force until 14 December 2013, unless otherwise shown.

The following lines have few trains (relative to service levels generally in this country), with fewer than 6 trains each way on at least 3 days a week – or do not run each weekday. Lines listed here exclude those appearing in Kursbuch tables 12000 to 12999, which themselves are only a selection of the services shown in the Kursbuch der deutschen Museums-Eisenbahnen (published annually by Verlag Uhle & Kleimann).
