Introduction

This list is based on the timetable in force until 13 December 2008, unless otherwise stated. Several companies publish railway timetables in Italy, but table numbers quoted here are from In Treno, the official Trenitalia book. Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information.

Obscure services

Como avoiding line: Cucciago (Bivio Rosales) - Chiasso

[D1, E3] (40B3) IT08/01

This cut-off line runs through a tunnel to the west of Como.

CiS155 Zürich HB – 15:48 Lugano - Trieste Centrale
CiS154 Trieste Centrale – 11:18 Milano Centrale – Schaffhausen

Monza – Sesto S Giovanni

[27, 171, 180, 185, M11] (41A3) IT08/02

The lines from Como (“Linea Chiasso”) and from Lecco (“Linea Lecco”) run parallel between Monza and Milano Greco Pirelli. The Linea Chiasso dive under the Linea Lecco south of Monza. In general, trains between Chiasso and Milano Centrale follow the Linea Chiasso through the dive under, while those between Lecco and Milano Porta Garibaldi use the flyover.

Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico - Milano Lancetti (Ferrovie Nord Milano)

[401, 402, M9] (41A3) IT08/03

Trains to and from Milano Rogoredo starting and terminating at Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico, or to and from stations on the Seveso line, run direct between Milano Lancetti and platforms 7 and 8 on the east side of Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico station. Those between Milano Rogoredo and Saronno run via a tunnel below the line from Milano Nord Cadorna and use platforms 1 and 2 on the west side of Milano Nord Bovisa Politecnico station.

Rho – Milano-Certosa

[11, 40, 160, 165, M10] (41A3) IT08/04

The lines from Domodossola (“Linea Varese”) and from Torino (“Linea Novara”) run parallel through Rho. The Linea Varese dive under the Linea Novara between Rho and Milano-Certosa. Various crossovers allow exceptions, but in general trains between Gallarate and Milano Porta Garibaldi (main line station or passante) follow the Linea Varese through the dive under, while those between Gallarate and Milano Centrale use crossovers to the Linea Novara west of Rho.

Milano Porta Garibaldi (Quadrivio Ghisolfa) - Milano Lambrate (Bivio Musocco)

[26, M8] (41B3) IT08/05

Most trains between Milano Porta Garibaldi and Milano Lambrate run direct via Bivio Mirabello. This curve, together with route IT08/06, enables trains via Milano Lambrate to arrive and depart at the west end of Porta Garibaldi. Trains using the west-facing terminal platforms, 1 to 12, are obliged to run via Bivio Musocco as are those calling at Villapizzone. Running time between Porta Garibaldi and Lambrate via Bivio Musocco is at least twenty minutes.

Milano Certosa (Triplo Bivio Seveso) - Milano Lambrate (Bivio Turro)

[B3, E1, M8] (41B3) IT08/06

This line around the north side of Milano is used by trains between the Rho and Bologna or Brescia lines, if not calling at Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi. Trains via route IT08/05 run via this line, as do:

EN313 Zürich HB – 00:58 Brig – Roma Termini
EN227 Paris-Bercy - 21:37 Dijon Ville - Roma Termini
E FO DZ13209 ‘s Hertogenbosch – 14:36 Venlo - Rimini

E SO DZ13208 15:25 Rimini – ‘s Hertogenbosch

Milano Lambrate - Pioltello-Limito

[12, 185, M12] (41B3) IT08/07

There are two routes between Milano Lambrate and the main line towards Brescia. Most trains use a direct connection off the main line between Milano Lambrate and Milano Rogoredo at Bivio Lambrate. Others, particularly some to and from Milano Porta Garibaldi or Milano Greco Pirelli, use the alternative route, which passes to the east of the carriage sidings south of Lambrate. Use of the eastern route may depend on line occupation and punctuality, as crossovers south of Lambrate provide an alternative.

Milano Lambrate - Milano Rogoredo (via Posto di Movimento Trecca)

[26, 45, M8] (41B3, not shown correctly) IT08/08

There are two routes between Milano Lambrate and Milano Rogoredo. Most trains use the main line, but there is an alternative, via a dive-under from the east side of the layout at Lambrate. Trains between Porta Garibaldi or Greco Pirelli and Rogoredo are particularly likely to use this route, but crossovers south of Lambrate provide an alternative. The dive-under provides the only route between Lambrate and Porta Romana, so is used by all trains between Milano Greco Pirelli and Milano S Cristoforo. These diverge from the route to Rogoredo at Posto di Movimento Trecca.

Milano Porta Romana (Bivio Porta Romana) - Milano Rogoredo

[3.1, 3.3] (41B3) IT08/09

This west to south curve is used by some high summer Auto al Seguito services to and from Milano S Cristoforo. There are no longer any peak services from Pavia and Piacenza to Milano Porta Romana.

Milano Rogoredo - Pioltello-Limito (via Posto di Movimento Trecca and Milano Smistamento)

[B1, 12, 26, 185] (41B3) IT08/10

This route is used by trains between the Brescia and Bologna or Genova lines if not booked to call at Milano Centrale, Lambrate or Porta Garibaldi. From Posto di Movimento Trecca it passes under the main line to Milano Lambrate and runs along the north side of Milano Smistamento. The frequent trains between Pioltello-Limito and Milano Porta Vittoria use a different route.

E SSuO IR1786 Bergamo - 07:14 Treviglio Ovest – Ventimiglia
E SSuO IR1791 Ventimiglia - 22:49 Milano Rogoredo – Bergamo

Pioltello Limito – Treviglio

[12, M12] (41B1, not shown) IT08/11

Two additional tracks came into use between Pioltello Limito and Treviglio in July 2007. These follow a different route east of Melzo, bypassing Trecella and Cassano d’Adda and are used by most trains not stopping between Milano Lambrate and Treviglio. There is no connection from the new fast lines to the Bergamo branch at Treviglio, so all trains to and from Treviglio Ovest continue to use the old line. The only trains scheduled to run non-stop via the old line and Treviglio are:

R2089 Milano Centrale – 07:23 Milano Lambrate – Venezia S Lucia
R2101 Milano Centrale – 14:23 Milano Lambrate – Verona Porta Nuova
SSuX R2669 Milano Centrale – 18:22 Milano Lambrate – Brescia

Milano Rogoredo (Doppio Bivio S Donato) - Tavazzano

[45] (46B3, not shown) IT08/12

The first section of the Milano - Bologna high speed line is in use between Milano Rogoredo and Tavazzano. For most of the way it runs to the southwest of the old main line. The original junction at the south end of the line, at S Zenone al Lambro, has been replaced by a new one at Tavazzano. This makes provision for further extension of the high speed line. The only trains not stopping at Melegnano, but scheduled to run via the old line, are:
