Previously route 6 ran from Zbożowy Rynek via Babia Wieś and the west - east curve at Rondo Toruńskie. The track to a loop at Babia Wieś remains available from the east and initially saw use by route 2 double running using two curves at Rondo Toruńskie. This was withdrawn from an unknown date and since then Babia Wieś has only seen trams  for a short period in 2023 with engineering work elsewhere.  


The description as above was used by a diverted route 2 double running to Babia Wieś from the east when access to Babia Wieś from the west was blocked by new line construction which ended on 5 December 2020 on opening of a new line from Zbożowy Rynek to Rondo Kujawskie. At Babia Wieś the normal east and westbound tracks split significantly so that diversion also did the rare west end north to south curve.
Note that the normal east and westbound tracks split significantly at Babia Wieś so any diversions until the complete line re-opens will use the loops rare west end north to south curve.

Wyżyny (Pętla) was previously not travelled in passenger service but from an unknown date a stop has been built on the loop and was in regular use clockwise from the west by terminating route 11 from 6 December 2020. But this appears to have been withdrawn when Szarych Szeregów to Perlowa  closed long term in connection with a new River Brda tram crossing so the use, if any at February 2022 is unknown.

Use of the clockwise curves from the east also ceased at the same time as access from Perlowa was blocked. Previously used by truncated route 2 from an unknown date in 2020 until 5 December 2020, then by October 2021 by a few Depot runs to Kazimierza Wielkiego [for Stomil Depot] at 18:54, 19:46 SSuX, 21:40 Daily, 22:16 SSuO, 23:04 Daily that would use the departure curve, and the arrival curve by departures from Szarych Szeregów north at 04:31, 04:49, 04:55 & 05:12. Plac Orląt Lwowskich to Kucelin-Szpital had been suspended since 1 October 2021 due to condition of track, so it was unexpected with no work undertaken that it re-opened on 3 November 2022. This was due to major works on nearby National Road number 91 resulting in large traffic delays, so restricted speed trams on segregated tracks were still quicker than buses... A January 2022 press article advised due to increased electricity prices, no funds to modernise, and only elderly type 105N trams can be used to Kucelin that it would almost certainly be suspended again when the road re-opened which was allegedly planned for 30 November 2023. But then an early November 2023 press article [https://www.transport-publiczny.pl/wiadomosci/gdzie-dojada-tramwaje-pod-jasna-gora-80676.html here] claims modernisation to Kucelin-Szpital including a straightening at Rondo Prezydenta Ronalda Reagana was part of a preliminary approved application for EU funds [along with construction of a new 3km tram line to Parkitka]. Then a city wide timetable re-cast in January 2024 reduced this service to half hourly but made no mention of a pending withdrawal but note as MPK timetable information is only released one calendar month at a time, as at 1 January 2024 it is only confirmed running until at least 31 January...

Additionally the local Authority again Tendered for works to re-instate the short link to the PKP station with bids due by 8 March 2022, but on 9 March it was cancelled, claiming they "wished to create a financial reserve by giving up some investments that are not a priority". This would have been a single track line as before but to a dead end terminus as opposed to the previous turning loop.

September 2022 update: The system has recently completely closed for modernisation, but a partial service resumed on 1 September to/from Tarpno which unusually provides a 10 minute service to the railway station from 04.42 to 22.30 as a regular route, Mondays to Friday, as opposed to just early and late journeys to/from the Depot as listed below. This Route 1 frequency reduces to every 15 minutes on Saturday and every 20 minutes on a Sunday. For how long is not mentioned, nor as they are receiving new trams if this route 1 might be re-instated as a permanent service.
Following a complete system closure for modernisation, a partial service resumed on 1 September 2022 to/from Tarpno but unusually to/from the railway station. When the southern section to Rządz re-opened on 1 December 2022, use of the 1.3km line from Al. 23 Stycznia to/from the railway station is again only in use by limited services running to/from the Tram Depot situated adjacent to the PKP station. However a tender was issued with plans to extend this line further along Dworcowa, plus a short branch off this line to the Mniszek housing estate with responses requested by 2 October 2023 so a regular service may resume.

There is a stop on the loop and in the past if on a route terminating from Zabrze it was possible to travel all of the loop on arrival and departures from the west. Route 10 now terminates from the Chebzie direction but it is not known if stop locations potentially again allow travel via both curves on and off the loop from the east.

A visitor in February 2023 found the route from Chorzów Rynek to Chorzów Metalowców closed and lifted at the Chorzów Metalowców end where a new north to west curve had been built which was in use by route 10. This continues in December 2023. There had been talk of a realignment in the Chorzów Metalowców area so it is not known if use of this curve may be temporary.

Previously there had been a single track triangle at Chorzów Metalowców leading to a non-passenger line to the Alstom Konstal factory but this branch was disconnected in February 2023. One year earlier route 11 terminated here from Katowice, with trams reversing onto the triangle out of service to depart from a stop on the south facing curve, and due to a blind corner departures were hand signalled away...
An enormous covered tram/bus interchange was opened on 7 December 2020 with a north side loop with access from both directions. Routes 7 [and 23 SO] terminate from the west but as there is a stop before the loop, the curve onto it is not thought to be available in service. However all westbound services from the Zawodzie Zajezdnia direction run via the loop to ensure all westbound departures leave from the same stop near the loop exit.

Following the opening of a new 1.9km connecting line from Katowice Dąbrówki to Dąb Huta Baildon on 30 December 2023, route 25 was extended to one stop short of the eastern loop at Park Śląski Wejście Główne so it is assumed this will run out of service to/from the eastern loop. This loop was previously shown to be in use on the 12 April 2023 route map by routes 0 and 41.
 
Maybe as a consequence of the eastern loop being used by [assumed] out of service route 25, the 30 December 2023 route map shows routes 0 and 41 terminating at Chorzów Stadion Śląski Pętla Zachodnia [west], so as the only access to the western loop from the Katowice direction is via 3/4's of the eastern loop, then via the third line to layover it would appear this can again be travelled in service.  


Routes 0 & 23 from the Katowice direction enter the eastern loop and run via the third line to layover on the western loop before exiting from there towards Katowice. Note there is a stop approaching the western loop on the connecting line... The stop on the loop also showed departures towards Katowice on route 6 at 18:28, 18:58 SSuX and research found these also arrive from Katowice so will run as per routes 0 and 23. They depart stop Park Śląski Wejście Główne at 18.25, 18:55 SSuX.
The western loop had also been used from the Chorzów direction between 18 December 2021 until at least February 2023 by an extended route 9, but as there are stops before and after the loop this was not travelled in passenger service, confirmed by a February 2022 traveller who found the Pętla stop did not display a route 9 timetable.


Since 18.12.2021 route 9 from the Chorzów direction uses the complete western loop, but as there is a Chorzów Stadion Śląski stop before the loop a February 2022 traveller had to ask to remain on board to travel to the Pętla stop. This loop being out of service was confirmed as the Pętla stop did not show a route 9 timetable but did for the 0, route 6 journeys as listed above and the 23. Services were suspended from 22 July 2022 for a line upgrade and the route is now increased to a 2 tram service and the latest information is SSuO every third pair would be worked by a vintage double ended Konstal 416N [one of two built either in 1949 or 1951] but this is yet to be officially confirmed. A Konstal operated the route until 14 March 2020 when it was suspended due to Corona-virus and when the service resumed on 9 July 2020, the Konstal was swapped in a mid-morning ceremony to a brand new low floor single car tram.
* Route 38: Services were suspended from 22 July 2022 for the below mentioned upgrade works, estimated completion by July 2023. The entry is the link on/off a currently isolated 1.34km shuttle in Bytom. This connection sees use by a daily pair in passenger service and timings from 17 October 2021 depart the main tram terminus in Bytom at Plac Sikorskiego at 05.28 SSuX, 09.28 SSuO or from Bytom Kosciol sw. Trojcy at 19.32 Daily, both journeys to/from Stroszek Zajezdnia Depot. Note the evening tram needs to reverse direction at the junction...  


This is all to change as a contract was signed on 2 February 2022 for a line upgrade including southbound services to be extended to the main Bytom tram terminus at pl. Sikorskiego anti-clockwise via two new curves, right into ul. Sądowa, then left into ul. Powstańców Śląskich, returning via the existing listing. The route would also be increased to a 2 tram service with one to be a modern vehicle and the other a vintage double ended Konstal 416N [one of two built either in 1949 or 1951] which operated the route until 14 March 2020 when it was suspended due to Corona-virus. Note the west side north to east curve on the inner street loop at Jagiellońska has no scheduled use but with a closure further north, it must be used by terminating route 19's from Katowice but as the timetable does not include a stop at Jagiellońska it is assumed it will run round the loop out of service until approximately July 2023.

Previously used from 22 July - 22 December 2022 by route 19 from Katowice terminating at Bytom Plac Sikorskiego although a traveller advised the timetable did not include a call at Jagiellońska, so their last official set down was the non-terminus Plac Sikorskiego stop BEFORE accessing the inner street line so the curve was done out of service.

Introduction

Some tram systems advertise their depot workings and enable one to ascertain the regular use by passenger-carrying services of junctions or sections of line that do not otherwise see public service. This occasional series lists such services that have come to notice. While the data for each system is current at the date stated, it is not the intention to endeavour to keep every entry up to date at every service change - the listing serves as a guide for travellers as to the sort of services they can look out for, enabling them to check current published timetable material at their time of travel.

To assist in tracing services, the route and/or timetable number for each journey is shown in parentheses, e.g. (1). Days of operation are in English notation (respectively: Su, M, T, W, Th, F, S) - plus "O" for only, "X" for excepted. Su (Sundays) usually includes public holidays in mainland Europe - but check locally.

Listings for other systems throughout the world - in the same format as shown below (please include date of timetable validity) - will always be welcomed.

NOTE: It is not the intention, nor possible with very frequent timetable changes to keep all entries up to date. They should be treated with caution and as a snapshot of what has been available to travel at some point rather than a list of what is available now.

A number of Polish cities provide free travel to 'seniors' of different ages so anyone who may qualify may wish to check the operators' websites for the relevant criteria.

There is a highly recommended journey planner that will cover ALL public transport options in Poland Jakdojade.pl which can search for direct journeys between two points, i.e. it can be tailored to search for rare curve use with high quality maps showing stop numbers and locations.

Bydgoszcz: MZK

The new connecting line from Zbożowy Rynek to Rondo Kujawskie opened on 6 December 2020 with a route recast bringing regular services at Szarych Szeregów over the existing but rare west to east, and a newly built west to south curve. The new river bridge between Toruńska and Most Kazimierza Wielkeigo [formerly Fordońska] opened with a temporary service by one route on 6 November 2023, increased to three routes from 9 December 2023.

Plac Praw Kobiet south - Plac Teatralny west

A timetable dated 9 December 2023 shows route 1 using this curve between 05:07 - 08:50 and 13:50 - 16:50 from Plac Praw Kobiet and from Plac Teatralny between 04:55 - 08:38 and 13:38 - 16:38 on Monday to Fridays only.

Rondo Toruńskie south to west and north to south curve at Babia Wieś loop

Last in use by temporary diversions of routes 7 & 8 from 6 November until 8 December 2023.

West of Babia Wieś loop to Zbożowy Rynek has been closed since March 2018 due to a landslip caused by the construction of a new building and the then land owner going bankrupt, Press article here and as at September 2023 the suggestion is the line west from Babia Wieś will remain closed until the end of 2024.

Previously route 6 ran from Zbożowy Rynek via Babia Wieś and the west - east curve at Rondo Toruńskie. The track to a loop at Babia Wieś remains available from the east and initially saw use by route 2 double running using two curves at Rondo Toruńskie. This was withdrawn from an unknown date and since then Babia Wieś has only seen trams for a short period in 2023 with engineering work elsewhere.

Note that the normal east and westbound tracks split significantly at Babia Wieś so any diversions until the complete line re-opens will use the loops rare west end north to south curve.

Wyżyny (Pętla)

No regular route use as at December 2023.

When the new west connecting line via Rondo Kujawskie opened a stop was built on the loop and it came into regular use from the east from an unknown date, then later from the west by route 11 from 6 December 2020. Use ended when Szarych Szeregów to Perlowa closed long term in connection with a new River Brda tram crossing, then resumed from the east by route 8 from an unknown date until 8 December 2023 after Szarych Szeregów to Perlowa reopened. The re-opening may mean resumed use to/from the east by Depot runs to Kazimierza Wielkiego [for Stomil Depot], and in October 2021 these were departures from the loop stop at 18:54, 19:46 SSuX, 21:40 Daily, 22:16 SSuO, 23:04 Daily and arrivals by departures from Szarych Szeregów north at 04:31, 04:49, 04:55 & 05:12. Note these Depot runs would also use entries Szarych Szeregów West to North and Perlowa South to East.

Most Kazimierza Wielkeigo [formerly known as Rondo Fordonskie] South to East

  • The provisional route map after opening of the new River Brda crossing showed no service via this curve by its usual route 7 but this has continued, albeit reduced SSuX with journeys between approximately 04:45 - 08:45 and 13:30 - 17:10. Temporarily due to a closure elsewhere it is also in use by all diverted route 11 journeys.

Szarych Szeregów West to North

  • A route re-cast shows this curve in use by route 11 since 9 December 2023, no regular service since route 2 was diverted to Kapusciśca following the 2020 route opening.

Previously this curve was only used by odd journeys to Kazimierza Wielkiego [for Stomil Depot] suggested by footnotes in the PDFs from Wyżyny. These were on route 2 at 19:17 SSuX, 23:29 Daily, route 9 at 23:36 Daily and route 11 at 18:56, 19:55 SSuX, 22:18 SSuO, 22:42 & 23:06 Daily but the electronic screen for the curve only platform at Szarych Szeregów North was seen to show next departures westbound between 04:06 - 05:12 SSuX there are probably others at other times. Note all these trams must also traverse entry Perlowa South to East in either direction.

Perlowa South to East

  • The 9 December 2023 route map shows this curve will be in use temporarily by diverted route 10, and possibly long term by route 11.

Previously since Szarych Szeregów to Perlowa closed long term in connection with a new River Brda tram crossing its only regular use was by Depot journeys to Kazimierza Wielkiego [for Stomil Depot] shown by footnotes in the PDFs on route 2 from Perlowa at 18:34 19:21 SSuX or 22:40, 23:09, 23:33 Daily, route 4 at 22:40, 23:08, 23:36 Daily, route 8 at 22:55, 23:19 Daily, route 9 at 19:00 SSuX 22:59, 23:26, 23:40 Daily and route 11 at 19:01, 20:00 SSuX, 22:23 SSuO, 22:47 & 23:11 Daily could not access this curve. Journeys from the Depot from stop Filmova would be a few minutes earlier than the 04:06 - 05:12 displayed at Szarych Szeregów North, plus additionally others heading for Kapusciśca and Glinki.

Niepodległości (Pętla) South to East

Despite the distance between Niepodległości and Niepodległości (Pętla) being just 200m and it quicker to run direct as per routes 3 & 5, PDF journey timings show some Depot journeys to Łoskoń on routes 7 & 10 still calling at and running via the substantial Niepodległości (Pętla) and local sources and a traveller confirm those do run via the loop and this unusual curve. Note there are other Depot runs to/from Łoskoń that do not call at Niepodległości (Pętla) so from January 2022 timetable changes the route 7 & 10 PDF's clearly show which do, r 7 with Footnotes B outbound and A inbound.

All of Niepodległości (Pętla) turning circle including the west to south curve can be done in passenger service on routes terminating at the Pętla as the same stop is used for arrivals and departures.

Częstochowa: MPK

A basic, at October 2022 two route system with no rare curves between routes, so much so that the MPK website map link is to the Jakdojade journey planner... Therefore a route map can be found here and timetables as at December 2023 here.

Route 1 to Kucelin-Szpital

Plac Orląt Lwowskich to Kucelin-Szpital had been suspended since 1 October 2021 due to condition of track, so it was unexpected with no work undertaken that it re-opened on 3 November 2022. This was due to major works on nearby National Road number 91 resulting in large traffic delays, so restricted speed trams on segregated tracks were still quicker than buses... A January 2022 press article advised due to increased electricity prices, no funds to modernise, and only elderly type 105N trams can be used to Kucelin that it would almost certainly be suspended again when the road re-opened which was allegedly planned for 30 November 2023. But then an early November 2023 press article here claims modernisation to Kucelin-Szpital including a straightening at Rondo Prezydenta Ronalda Reagana was part of a preliminary approved application for EU funds [along with construction of a new 3km tram line to Parkitka]. Then a city wide timetable re-cast in January 2024 reduced this service to half hourly but made no mention of a pending withdrawal but note as MPK timetable information is only released one calendar month at a time, as at 1 January 2024 it is only confirmed running until at least 31 January...

Depot access curves

The Depot is accessed by a triangle in-between Równoległa and Powstańców Śląskich stops and there are arrival and departure platforms (Zajezdnia MPK) just off Aleja Niepodległości and outside the gates to the depot.

Elbląg: ZKM

Grota Roweckiego (Traugutta) - Grobla Św.Jerzego west to east curve

As part of the November 2017 opening from Lutego to Grota Roweckiego route 5 uses this curve towards Saperów but is SSuX with the last tram departing from there at 18:10. Additionally the route was suspended for 27 June - 31 August 2022 so check before travelling.

Robotnicza/Alstom East to North

Use significantly reduced when routes 4 and 5 were diverted to use the new line.

  • Route 2: 22:00 SSuX 22:09 SO 19:39 SuO

Note these timings are from Królewiecka - światowid, one stop before this single track curve as no details were displayed at Robotnicza/Alstom, the junction towards Zjazdowy [the Depot]. The crossovers at the junction for journeys from the Depot were shiny but no details were displayed at the appropriate stops.

Gdansk: ZTM

Off route sections [but no rare curves] can be identified after selecting a route by the place names in italics from here. For rare curves drill down into the routes and look for journeys with footnotes. Link to the tram network dated 13 May 2023 here but note that long term closures/diversions may not be shown. The current timetables can be found here.

The following entries are from the 2 January 2022 timetable, plus in previous years a vintage tram has been observed using the substantial loop at Węzeł Kliniczna.

Okopowa east to west

  • Summer 2022 SSuO route 68 between 09:30 - 17:00. It commenced running on 25 June but no end date was quoted, see timetables for details.

Ujeścisko loop

  • Until 4 March 2023 all route 12 journeys ran via this loop to/from Lawendowe Wzgórze calling at Ujeścisko twice. This ended when the new line from Przemyska to Ujeścisko opened the next day as route 12 will then terminate at Ujeścisko so the loop will no longer be traversed in passenger service.

Brama Oliwska - Dworzec PKS - Węzeł Groddecka north to west

  • Route 4 between 06:00 and 17:15 SSuX

Nowy Port: Rybołowców south to west & Plac Wolnosci west to south

  • Route 7 from stop Wladyslaw IV between 03:51 - 08:10, 09:52 & 13:10 - 16:24 SSuX. Note the 09:52 departure also traverses two other entries as listed below.

The inner street loop at Nowy Port on the May 2023 map is shown as used by route 10, with it terminating at a stop on the loop rather than as before at the nearby tram Depot, [in and out of the Depot curves were done out of service].

Węzeł Kliniczna north to west

  • Route 7 Depot run to Strzyża at 10:07 SSuX [also see above and below entry]

Wyspiańskiego east to south

  • Route 7 Depot run to Strzyża from Węzeł Kliniczna at 10:07 SSuX [also using above entry]
  • Route 8 Depot run to Strzyża from Kliniczna at 23:21, 23:48, 00:16 Daily

Śródmieście east to north

  • Route 10 journeys going off route from Dworzec Główny to terminate at Węzeł Groddecka at 21:17, 22:17 Daily

Siedlce loop

  • Route 10 from Skrajna at 04:42 Daily, 04:57, 15:31 SSuX

A traveller advises only inbound to the loop stop is in service as pick up is at the Siedlce stop on the passing route.

Gorzów Wielkopolski: MZK

In recent years the network has been undergoing complete modernisation but the long suspended line to Silwana re-opened with a 0.4km extension to Fieldorfa-Nila on 22 July 2023. There are no rare curves on this small system and no short workings shown in the timetables dated 2 January 2024 here. A route map including buses dated 1 September 2023 here.

Dworzec Główny

The short 200m branch to the main PKP station re-opened earlier than expected on 2 January 2024 with a change to a dead end terminus as opposed to the previous turning circle. Initially this was to be facing east in Ul. Skladowa but the January 2023 Tender documents revealed this would face west into Ul. Jancarza to link in with studies for a planned tram/train network onto long closed ex PKP lines 415 to Lubiszyn and 426 to Strzelce Krajenskie. This scheme was apparently a disqualified kolej+ bid [as neither have population centres of over 10,000], plus law changes would be required as tram/trains are not currently allowed on the PKP network... The initial service is only hourly daily with departures from 06:35 to 17:35.

Grudziądz: MZK

Following a complete system closure for modernisation, a partial service resumed on 1 September 2022 to/from Tarpno but unusually to/from the railway station. When the southern section to Rządz re-opened on 1 December 2022, use of the 1.3km line from Al. 23 Stycznia to/from the railway station is again only in use by limited services running to/from the Tram Depot situated adjacent to the PKP station. However a tender was issued with plans to extend this line further along Dworcowa, plus a short branch off this line to the Mniszek housing estate with responses requested by 2 October 2023 so a regular service may resume.

There is a triangle at Al. 23 Stycznia [different sides historically used by withdrawn Routes 1 or 3] so as the on-line timetable only gives timings from route termini with a footnote A for Depot journeys, inbounds are estimated from the minutes shown between stops on the one-page PDF... Timetable here. These are timings from before the closure but a visitor in May 2023 confirmed the parameters are the same on resumption.

Dworzec Głowny - Al. 23 Stycznia East to South

  • Route 2: From Pętla Tarpno departing Al. 23 Stycznia North to Dworzec Głowny at 22:30, 22:50 SSuX 22:30 22:42 SO 22:20, 22:40 SO

Katowice: KZK GOP

Large parts of the network have been closed for upgrading in the past few years but Depot runs keep their original service numbers with details displayed as additional panels on tram stops when off route. Timetables here and the methodology is any sections not covered regularly are shown in italics. Route map as at 30 December 2023 here. These highlight what routes are altered from normal and a recent development is diversions/change to stop arrangements are shown in diagrams. The entries below were taken from August 2020/October 2021 timetables plus reports from later visits with newer discoveries listed first.

Zaborze Pętla

The usual service pattern has been through Chebzie - Zabrze services but from some time in 2023 they have been split terminating at Zaborze Pętla. There is a stop on the loop and in the past if on a route terminating from Zabrze it was possible to travel all of the loop on arrival and departures from the west. Route 10 now terminates from the Chebzie direction but it is not known if stop locations potentially again allow travel via both curves on and off the loop from the east.

Biskupice Pętla

From at least May 2023 route 30 that runs SSuX terminates here from the east, and arrivals run via the 200m long loop to a separate and combined arrival/departure stop by the loop exit, completing the loop on departure.

Sosnowiec Park east to north

A route extension to Zagórze Rondo Jana Pawła II opened on 19 December 2022 and the curve for Depot journeys to/from Osiedle Zamkowe sees scheduled use but only timings off the branch are published. Departures as at February 2023 on route 15 from Sielec Kąpielisko at 20:32, 21:17, 21:47, 22:25, 23:15, 00:00, 00:25 SSuX, 21:32 SSuO

Koszutka Słoneczna Pętla

As at December 2023 temporary route 46 was terminating at the combined arrival/departure stop on this short connecting curve between the north and southbound lines so it could all be done in service.

Chorzów Metalowców

A visitor in February 2023 found the route from Chorzów Rynek to Chorzów Metalowców closed and lifted at the Chorzów Metalowców end where a new north to west curve had been built which was in use by route 10. This continues in December 2023. There had been talk of a realignment in the Chorzów Metalowców area so it is not known if use of this curve may be temporary.

Previously there had been a single track triangle at Chorzów Metalowców leading to a non-passenger line to the Alstom Konstal factory but this branch was disconnected in February 2023. One year earlier route 11 terminated here from Katowice, with trams reversing onto the triangle out of service to depart from a stop on the south facing curve, and due to a blind corner departures were hand signalled away...

Zawodzie Centrum Przesiadkowe loop east to west

An enormous covered tram/bus interchange opened on 7 December 2020 with north side loops accessed from both directions. Following complaints all through westbound services were diverted to run via the loop to ensure every departure towards Katowice left from the same stop near the loop exit.

Zawodzie Centrum Przesiadkowe west side, north to east curve

There are limited journeys starting from the Katowice bound stop on the west side of the loop heading east, most being one stop live Depot runs to Zawodzie Zajezdnia which depart using this north to east curve. In February 2023 these were on route 14 at 19:01, 19:31, 20:01 SSuX, 23:04, 23:53, 00:53 Daily or route 15 at 03:06, 03:51, 04:28, 04:44 Daily 23:24 SSuX but it should be noted that the 19:01 Depot run ran through non-stop despite being shown on the departure screens to call only at the through route platform.

Routes terminating from the west [route 7 at December 2023] call at a stop before accessing the loop to layover so the east end west to north curve is not available in passenger service.

Zabrze city centre avoiding curve

A new east to north curve opened some time in 2021 and by at least 1 December 2023 is in use by a half hourly route 2 running between Gliwice Zajezdnia and Bytom.

Katowice Plac Wolności

From observation any tram terminating here from the east will carry passengers on a circuit around the square including the rare and short north to south connection on the west side.

Katowice Plac Miarki

  • Trams to/from Brynów use different streets north of this stop, but any trams terminating at Plac Miarki will terminate at a combined arrival/departure stop on a short connecting curve between the two streets so can be travelled. In December 2023 use is by route 41.

Chorzów Stadion Śląski Pętla

  • There are two loops here 400m apart with a separate third connecting east to west track parallel to the two usual running lines at a slightly lower level.

Following the opening of a new 1.9km connecting line from Katowice Dąbrówki to Dąb Huta Baildon on 30 December 2023, route 25 was extended to one stop short of the eastern loop at Park Śląski Wejście Główne so it is assumed this will run out of service to/from the eastern loop. This loop was previously shown to be in use on the 12 April 2023 route map by routes 0 and 41.

Maybe as a consequence of the eastern loop being used by [assumed] out of service route 25, the 30 December 2023 route map shows routes 0 and 41 terminating at Chorzów Stadion Śląski Pętla Zachodnia [west], so as the only access to the western loop from the Katowice direction is via 3/4's of the eastern loop, then via the third line to layover it would appear this can again be travelled in service.

The western loop had also been used from the Chorzów direction between 18 December 2021 until at least February 2023 by an extended route 9, but as there are stops before and after the loop this was not travelled in passenger service, confirmed by a February 2022 traveller who found the Pętla stop did not display a route 9 timetable.

Łagiewniki Targowisko West to North

  • Was in use by odd Depot runs on route 9 in October 2018, but no use recently due to a long term engineering work closure. This may change from 3 February 2024 when the line towards Chebzie reopens served by route 17.

Bytom Kosciol sw. Trojcy - Bytom Plac Sikorskiego

  • Route 38 was extended from the 30 December 2023 via the previous daily one pair only connection to the main Bytom tram network. Additionally, services towards Bytom Plac Sikorskiego will use two new curves; north to west towards stop Bytom Sąd, then east to south around the street circuit via Bytom Moniuszki to Bytom Plac Sikorskiego, returning direct to Bytom Kosciol sw. Trojcy.

Services were suspended from 22 July 2022 for a line upgrade and the route is now increased to a 2 tram service and the latest information is SSuO every third pair would be worked by a vintage double ended Konstal 416N [one of two built either in 1949 or 1951] but this is yet to be officially confirmed. A Konstal operated the route until 14 March 2020 when it was suspended due to Corona-virus and when the service resumed on 9 July 2020, the Konstal was swapped in a mid-morning ceremony to a brand new low floor single car tram.

A still isolated 1.34km shuttle service had resumed on 28 October 2023 with the connection used only by the daily pair from Bytom Plac Sikorskiego at 04:10 daily or from Bytom Kosciol sw. Trojcy at 23:24 daily, both journeys to/from Stroszek Zajezdnia Depot, with the evening tram needing to reverse direction at the junction...

Bytom Plac Sikorskiego terminus: Jagiellońska north to east

1. Trams to/from Katowice and Stroszek Zajezdnia take different streets in Bytom by direction, plus
2. those from Gliwice or Łagiewniki take an anti-clockwise circuit [not obvious from MPK simplified schematic map], terminating at stops on passing loops at Bytom Plac Sikorskiego on the east side.

Following opening of new curves on 30 December 2023 [see entry for Bytom r 38], there is now an inner and an outer street loop. Routes on departure towards Gliwice or Łagiewniki take the inner street loop via stop Jagiellońska, and the route map dated 20 December 2023 shows route 49 [terminating at Bytom Plac Sikorskiego from Katowice] re-routed in service via a call on the outer street loop at Bytom Sąd and the new east to south curve so it is now highly unlikely that the north to east curve at Jagiellońska from the inner street loop towards Bytom Plac Sikorskiego terminus will see use. Previously used from 22 July - 22 December 2022 by route 19 from Katowice terminating at Bytom Plac Sikorskiego although a traveller advised the timetable did not include a call at Jagiellońska, so their last official set down was the non-terminus Plac Sikorskiego stop BEFORE accessing the inner street line so the curve was done out of service.

Bytom Urząd Miasta east to north

  • Its only planned use is usually by journeys to/from Bytom Stroszek Depot and Bytom Szkoła Medyczna. Following a long term engineering work closure, from 30 December 2023 there were daily route 10 trams at 22:54, 23:14 from Bytom Szkoła Medyczna and 04:30 from Bytom Stroszek Depot via this curve. Temporary route 39 had used this curve from 23 July until 22 December 2022.

Bytom Łagiewnicka south to west

Limited Depot use only is the norm. In the past this curve was used by route 17 to Gliwice Zajezdnia at 17:39 SSuX, 20:09, 23:45 Daily or by route 5 journeys to/from Zajezdnia Chorzów from Bytom Łagiewnicka at 03:06, 03:53 and 04:39 Daily or from Bytom Zamłynie at 23:09, 00:02 and 00:52 Daily. This curve was in all day use due to railway bridge works on 29/30 April and 6/7, 13/14th May 2023 by diverted routes 5, 7, 9 & 17.

Chorzów Ratusz/Rynek

All tracks of routes previously terminating at the separate loop at Chorzów Ratusz have been relocated to new interchange stops alongside Bytom - Katowice routes at Chorzów Rynek so most of the previous rare curve entries no longer exist.

The tracks to/from Chorzów Batory approach Chorzów Rynek using separate streets and as part of the changes a new single track west to south curve towards Chorzów Stadion Śląski was installed south of the Chorzów Rynek stop, with the south to west curve north of Chorzów Rynek mainly on the course of a previous TSUL curve from the old Chorzów Ratusz stops but now used in the opposite direction... This change is believed to have commenced from 18 December 2021 and these curves were used by an an extended route 9. Use had ceased by at least 12 April 2023 but resumed on 30 December 2023 by route 6.

A previous north to west curve from Metalowców towards Tarkowisko was retained but sees no regular use [and the line to Metalowców was closed for long term engineering work by February 2023], with a south end new west to north curve used by all terminators at Chorzów Rynek from the Chorzów Batory direction.

Katowice Rondo avoiding curve

  • Was in use by route 33 in October 2018 but no such service by August 2020.

Kraków: MPK

As at August 2022 with rare curve uses identified in October 2018, October 2021, June 2022 and July 2023 also listed. Note the four stop branch from north of Kombinat to Walcownia closed permanently in late 2018. This link should take you to the regularly updated and latest Network Map with Timetables here. Off route Depot runs are shown in on-line timetables by footnote, those listed are as at October 2018.

Rondo Grzegórzecki south to east

  • In use from 3 July 2023 until 13 August 2023 by diverted route 9

Rondo Koczmyrzowskie south west to south east

  • In use from 29 August until 14 October 2022 by diverted route 1

Lubicz east to north

  • Previously in use (by June 2022) by route 5 but by at least 29 August 2022 this curve was in use by route 17 and additionally by 15 October 2022 by route 19, both diverted to terminate at CM. Rakowicki which was scheduled to end on 11 November 2022 when route 2 resumed serving CM. Rakowicki via the west to north curve.

Dworzec Towarowy

  • From some time before June 2022 until 29 August 2022 temporary route 73 towards Czerwone Maki used the east side, northbound stop at Dworzec Towarowy then the north end, east to west inside curve, whilst trams towards Nowy Biezanów ran through via the stop on the south east side. The inside curve normally has no service, and the south east side stops only by routes terminating here from opposite directions from Nowy Kleparz or Politechnika.

Stary Kleparz East to North

  • Route 44 for an unknown period in 2022, in use from at least 29 August 2022. Previously by temporary route 74 between 06:15 & 18:30 SSuX by October 2021 with use ending by June 2022.

Kopiec Wandy Pętla connection and loops

This large loop is located at ground level adjacent to a tram flyover where the line from Kombinat to Pleszów crosses over the line from Plac Centralny which can be accessed from both. From the high level is via a 200 metre north to east connecting line but note this is not used in scheduled service as the Network map now shows a stop named Kopiec Wandy before the loop access junction, plus a traveller advises there are no set down or pick up stops on the loop tracks used by any trams from the Pleszów line. This connection has seen use by various routes since at least September 2021, but from 3 July 2023 only by route 21.

From the low level lines there were previously stops in passenger use located for arrivals just off route on the loop, or on the loop exit curve for departures but by at least 15 October 2022 the network map shows low level routes [just the 16] terminating one stop short of Kopiec Wandy at Bardosa so it would appear travel to/from Kopiec Wandy Pętla is no longer possible. A map of Kopiec Wandy Pętla can be accessed here.

  • The 2023 Tourist Route 0 does not come here, unlike as rumoured in previous years.

Teatr Słowackiego [Kraków Głowny] North to West

  • Normally only by FSSuO Night route 69, running Half hourly in both directions from stops Dworzec Głowny Zachód and Stare Kleparz between approximately 23.50 and 04.00. This was in use by temporary day route 70 from 29 August 2022 which was no longer running by 2 November 2022.

Kombinat North to South

In October 2018 an ex Depot tram on temporary route 73 ran in service via this curve from nearby Nowa Huta Depot to Kopiec Wandy Pętla. It appeared on the North stop electronic departure screen and departed at 15.33 on a Thursday.

Dajwór multi-street loop

  • Tourist Route 0 operated by historic vehicles departs from stop numbered 01 on the south end of this street loop at 11:10, 12:30, 13:50, 15:30 & 16:50 to Cichy Kącik on Sunday's and holiday's in Summer 2023, departing to the south, and arriving from the north. It runs from 25 June - ? September 2023 and note despite taking different outbound and inbound routes it does no other rare sections.

Łódź: MPK

As at October 2022 around ten sections of the network had no service, mainly due to a backlog of maintenance work, but also the construction of the PKP underground link between Fabryczna and Kaliska stations. The closures are shown in grey on the Urbanrail website. Compare this to the official pdf dated April 2023 map showing tram replacement bus routes... In addition there are regular timetable changes so this Łódź section is guaranteed to be out of date, so any visitor must do their own research just before their visit on the MPK Company website. This will not be helped by the official website map only reflecting long term changes, but the available on-line timetables are usually up to date and has a linked map for each direction of all routes. The City Councils' website frequently contains updates on current work here.

Allegedly EU Funds have been obtained for 10km of line refurbishments which MPK claim will re-open at least Ogrodowa – Północna, Legionów - Cmentarną and Wojska Polskiego Franciszkańska to Doły, the last mentioned having its previous street running sections relocated to a separate formation and is due to re-open on 16 March 2024.

Trams going off route to Depot will display "GAJ" with or instead of their route number and are listed on-line. To find these click on any route in the above link, [routes recently amended will be in red, but some diversions have been in place for so long they are now considered the usual route...]. Click on a stop name and this will show a complete days' timings, with those going off route with an x or y suffix. Click on that specific timing and the left-hand side calling points will change to show all stops on and off route to reach the Depot.

The information at stops will show any journey going off route within a square, with details listed in a footnote. It would appear journeys from a Depot to line of route are not listed anywhere!!

There is a summer weekend Tourist Route 0 operated by vintage trams, but the published 2023 route did no rare curves.

Kilińskiego Pomorska east to north

A long term closure resulted in use by diverted route 17 from at least April 2022 to June 2023. This had ended by March 2024.

Łódź Fabryczna

New and complicated sections of track were opened to better serve the new underground PKP station and this entry identifies what is rare. Some years after they opened and by April 2022, route 4 terminated here from the east, and on departure was the only route using the east to north and south to east curve to a long term closed section of Pl Narutowicza to line of route. By March 2024 this was changed to route 9.
By late June 2023 a route had resumed running past the west end of Łódź Fabryczna calling at adjacent stop Przystanek mBank. That reinstated a service over the north to south line here and at nearby Kilinskiego - Narutowicza.

Pl. Wolności

A pedestrianisation of this square has changed the track network here to a double track route passing east to west around the north side, plus a triangular junction at the north road exit. All routes had been closed since August 2022 but a service resumed in March 2024, with route 17 from the weekend of 9/10 March 2024, with additional services added later.

Previously all routes split into single tracks running anti-clockwise around the north or now lifted south sides, with triangle junctions at the east, west and north streets. With the loss of direction changing possibilities, a new south to east curve slightly north of Pl. Wolności between Pl. Nowomiejska and Pl. Północna has been built although allegedly it is only to be used for diversions and not by a regular route. Immediately prior to closure all combinations at Pl. Wolności could be travelled even though the no longer existing east side south to north curve was only in use by diverted route 5.

Piotrkowska Centrum/Mickiewicza

Some time between August 2014 and June 2017 all north/south and vv services across Tadeusza Kościuszk/Adama Mickiewicza were diverted via a north to east curve to a cross platform interchange with east west routes at a new and roofed Piotrkowska Centrum, then a new section of route built south along Piotrkowska St from the east end of Piotrkowska Centrum joining the old route before stop Brzeźna. The old north/south tracks were left in situ with no scheduled service with by September 2020 new curves in place; single track south to east from Żwirki avoiding Piotrkowska Centrum, single track west to south from Żeromskiego/Mickiewicza to Mickiewicza plus double track south to east from Mickiewicza to Piotrkowska Centrum and a west to north curve at Żwirki/Piotrkowska.

Illustrating the usage and regular changes to routes, in September 2020 route 3A terminated from the north and did an anti-clockwise circuit via the north to west curve at Żwirki/Piotrkowska to Mickiewicza but by October 2021 route 3A terminated from the south and did a clockwise circuit via the south to west curve at Żwirki/Piotrkowska to Mickiewicza and then the south to east to Piotrkowska Centrum, but from 14 February 2022 that became tram route Z...

Piłsudskiego Śmigłego-Rydza west to north

Note all these services are timed from the stop before the junction at Przędzalniana

By August 2022 route 8 terminates at Zarzew using the curve to the east with no use of the curve to the west as it is shown as closed in the latest on-line map. Prior to this the following Depot journeys ran off route immediately by turning west.

The four long Urban routes

All were under threat of closure for years and each at some point has had no service, some parts unlikely to ever re-open.

  • 41 to Pabianice re-opened on 1 July 2023 after being bus substituted by September 2020. This followed a previous closure from 14 May - 31 October 2017, or beyond stop Cegielniana (Ksawerów) from at least December 2019 or beyond Chocianowice IKEA by September 2020.
  • 43 The Lutomiersk line west of the junction to the short turning circle branch at Zdrowie closed from 2 March 2019 due to condition of track, with the short Zdrowie branch and east to Legionów Wlókniarzy closing later. In October 2021 EU/local contributions finance to reinstate part way as far as Konstantynów was obtained and after two failed tenders, work is under way but Completion is delayed. The Tender documents revealed the Budget does not include work at the Legionów Wlókniarzy junction, so even when the Konstantynów service resumes it will terminate west of, and short of the junction with only against the flow early/late Depot runs running through to/from central Łódź. By April 2023 rails were removed for upgrading from sections not embedded in tarmac but as the Contractors could not obtain the necessary road closure permits work was delayed to such an extent that it could not be completed before the EU use of funding deadline of 31 December 2023. By agreement this money was transferred to be used on projects elsewhere in Łódź, but then internal Regional Funding was provided so work resumed, and the January 2024 estimate is services to Konstantynów could resume in July 2024.

Reinstating onwards from Konstantynów to Lutomiersk was thought unlikely [and many parts of the infrastructure have been stolen] even though the Municipality of Lutomiersk entered the section under their control in the National Register of Monuments, [meaning it cannot be dismantled]. However in January 2024 they unexpectedly accused the Konstantynów authorities of a "lack of will" on modernizing the section to the Lutomiersk border at Ignacew claiming this led to the loss of "guaranteed co-financing" and prevented Lutomiersk from applying for EU funds. Konstantynów responded by saying Lutomiersk did not prepare the appropriate application documents, so there are clearly political and finance issues to resolve before progress towards re-opening... Then in March 2024 the Press reported Lutomiersk have begun the process to apply for EU funds to reinstate, but this has first to be approved and supported by various Łódź bodies.

Note the route 43 withdrawal meant a section in Łódź city centre from Wlókniarzy Legionów to Legionów [plus the west to north curve at Zachodnia/Legionów] also lost all services and the former was noted without wires in September 2020. The second tender for Zdrowie to Konstantynów does NOT include its re-instatement.

  • 45 Helenówek via Zgierz Kurak to Zgierz Plac Kilińskiego and
  • 46 [Helenówek -] Zgierz Kurak via Zgierz Proboszczewice to Ozorków

Beyond the northern Łódź city boundary at Helenówek to Zgierz Plac Kilińskiego re-opened on 20 December 2021 as route number 6, but this is planned to revert to the 45 from a March/April 2024 timetable change. Both routes had been bustituted from February 4 2018 due to condition of the infrastructure. Note if ticketing conditions are the same as before closure you will need extra zone coverage in addition to all of Łódź to travel to Zgierz.

The junction pointwork with the Ozorków line at Zgierz Kurak was removed as part of the reopening works to Zgierz Plac Kilińskiego, and the wiring towards Ozorków taken down before it was stolen. Since then Zgierz Council have expressed an interest in re-opening the 3.8km from Zgierz Kurak to the city boundary at Zgierz Proboszczewice and a March 2024 Press Article advised a funding application had been made that had been favourably received with Zgierz Council contributing 15% of the estimated PLN 90 Million required. Re-opening further towards Ozorków is considered highly unlikely as even the replacement bus service is now irregular and does not run all day, and the provisional re-instatement costs of several hundred million PLN exceeds the annual budget of the Ozorków authorities... Plus it could no longer reach its previous terminal loop as that area was only leased by the Council who gave up their tenancy in 2023 and it has since been dismantled.

Olsztyn: MPK

The new 6km line from the junction north of stop Skwer Wakara to Pieczewo opened on 1 January 2024 and due to different city centre termini separate east to west and east to north curves will be in use at Skwer Wakara

Route 3

Runs University days only between approximately 07:00 and 20.00 so no service from Galeria Warmińska to Prawocheński University outside of those hours or at weekends.

Wysoka Brama

The previous single track city centre termini was replaced on 14 December 2023 by a new double track stop approximately 130m further around the corner in plac Jedności Słowiańskiej. Press Article here.

Skwer Wakara west to north

An October 2016 late evening journey on an asterisked timetable journey saying a change was needed to reach the usual southern route 1 terminus at Kanta was assumed to mean use of this curve [towards the Depot] for a connection to a southbound service. However the tram still took the normal west to south curve and continued towards Kanta so whether that was usual is not known. The August 2023 timetables still shows similar described * services so any further reports would be appreciated.

Poznań: MPK

Note the Tourist Tram entries as per 2021 and previous year use are shown separately below.

Poznań is a large system with no fewer than six Grand Junctions, normally with 17 day and two night routes plus a summertime circular 0 using historic vehicles. System map as at 1 January 2024 here after a new south to east curve used by routes 5 and 17 from Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny [renamed ex Towarowy] towards Ratajcjaka or Gwarna came into use.

Connecting line from Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny to Poznań Glowny [stops previously known as Towarowa I and Towarowa II]

This ½ km connecting line normally had no service but regular use commenced when a new north end south to east curve opened on 16 December 2023 so the entries have been revised.

West to south to Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny - Connecting line - Poznań Glowny - North to east curve towards Wierzbięcice

This combination was in use by route 2 since at least 4 September 2023 until 15 December 2023. Both curves now have no regular route use so check the timetables for routes 5 and 17 for any Depot journeys.

East to south to Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny - Connecting line - Poznań Glowny - North to west curve towards stop Dworzec Zachodni

In use by routes 5 and 17 from 16 December 2023.

Wrocławska east to south

A temporary "climbing track" curve was laid between the two permanent routes converging to the west of the tram stop. This was in use by diverted routes 5, 6 & 9 until some time in the "first quarter of 2022" from early April 2021.

Temporarily use by diverted routes 9 and 18 for an unknown period from 13 December 2021

Polwiejska south to west

Temporarily used by diverted route 9, then as at February 2022 by route 18 for an unknown period from 13 December 2021

Temporarily used in February 2022 by routes 10, 11 and 39, but as route 11 is still shown as doing so after 16 December 2023 it appears to have been permanently re-routed via this curve.

Glowgowska/Hetmańska East to South

As at September 2021 the curve was in use by two route 14's from Górczyn to Starołęka Depot departing Górczyn at 22:43 & 23:03 Daily

Also previously used by just one journey on Tourist route 0, see below section.

Note it is not possible to travel the west to south curve on route 1,6,7, 15 or 17 Depot Runs and you will be asked to leave the tram at an alighting only point BEFORE the curve as there is no stop after the curve before access to the Depot.

Traugutta South to West

Normally only journeys to Zajezdnia Glowgowska from Dębiec on route 2 at 21:56, 22:56, 23:15 Daily 12:09 SSuX, route 9 at 21:14 SSuX or 23:08 Daily or route 10 at 19:04 SSuX, 22:44 & 23:01 Daily.

Note after this curve it is not possible to additionally travel Glowgowska/Hetmanska East to South as there is no stop after the curve before the Depot [but see above entry for use in the opposite direction to a different location, and Tourist Route 0 use below].

Had been in use in February 2022 due to route closures by routes 10, 11 and 39. This had ended by August 2022.

Budziszyńska Loop

Route 6 terminates in passenger service at a stop 1/3rd into the loop identically named to the one used by trams passing to/from Junikowo. Similarly for departures there is an in service pick up stop at the loop exit.

Rondo Starołęka East to North

Temporarily in use from at least 4 September 2023 until 15 December 2023 by route 5.

Previously no use by August 2022 although from 13 December 2021 route 13 ran this way. Previously only Night Route 201 ran via this curve and only in a clockwise direction but from an unknown date after September 2020 it was re-routed.

Rondo Starołęka West to South

As at September 2021 in use by Depot runs on route 14 from Górczyn to Starołęka departing Górczyn at 22:43 & 23:03 Daily. Previously used by diverted r 12 to/from Starołęka from 14 September until no later than 12 December 2021 and by a few Depot runs on routes 1 & 2.

Most Tealtrany West to North

Temporarily in use by Route 18 from no later than 15 November until 12 December 2021

Wierzbięcice east to south

Route 9 from 14 September until 12 December 2021.

Poznan Tourist Route 0

2021 dates were SSuO 15 May - 26 September with a revised route starting and ending in the Museum Tram Depot at Zajezdnia Madalińskiego at Traugutta. The entries are in the order of traversal.

Zajezdnia Madalinskiego

This closed Depot is used for storage of the Tram Museums vehicles and any through journey will run via the Depot, arriving via the north to west Depot access line and departing towards Głogowska/Hetmańska.

Glowgowska/Hetmańska East to South and Museum Glogowowska

Only by the 12:20 from Zajezdnia Madalinskiego. The website Notice states "through the Głogowska Depot with a museum tour" so what this actually involves at Glogowowska is not confirmed. See above for limited use of the curve only by route 14 Starołęka Depot runs.

This loop is also shown in use by Temporary route 99 from at least 4 September 2023

Marcinkowskiego

This short connecting curve where daytime routes split to travel different streets was used in 2019 by just two route 0 journeys.

Szczecin: ZDITM

Recently discovered entries come first, all other entries should be checked to see if still in use on timetables that can be found here and on a combined bus/tram map with tram lines highlighted in colour dated 16 September 2023 available here.

Wyszyńskiego north to west

With the north south route alongside the river past Szczecin main station closed, route 6 is shown diverted via this curve as at September 2023.

Plac Rodła West to North

In use by diverted routes 1, 5 & 12 for an unknown period, and still in use by route 12 as at September 2023.

Wawrzyniaka north to west

  • A traveller in September 2021 advised use by at least Route 7 Journeys from Zajezdnia Pogodna to Krzekowo departing Plac Galczyńskiego at 14:00 and 14:10


Szczecin was first databased following a visit in October 2015 so details from then but not updated since are listed here for reference.

Ul. Dworcowa loop

Note this is a clockwise only single track street loop not shown on the latest network maps which logically was being scheduled as the quickest way to reach the relevant Depot. Note that only the Route 2 entries were shown in the PDF's as doing the complete loop in service and there was no route 2 running in September 2021. For the others there is a stop of the same name on Route 6 at which you may be asked to leave the tram.

A new north/south connecting line to the west of the other two with triangles at both ends is visible on Google Streetview images dated May 2021 but as at December 2023 it has no service. The north to south curve at the south end, and south to east curve at the north via stop Osiedle Młodych 05 was in use northbound only by route 7 from at least 28 January 2023 for an unknown period.

A new 5.5km line from [north of Waly gen. Sikorskiego] south to north – Heweliusza opened on 1 September 2023.

Uniwersytecka - Uniwersytecka [PKS] to Wały gen. Sikorskiego

This north/south connecting line via Uniwersytecka [PKS] stops 01 & 02 [with no west to south curve at the north end or north to east curve at the south] normally has no service but from 28 January 2023 until 31 March 2023 was in use by diverted routes 2 and 4. Previously used by route 2 southbound only towards Motoarena in Summer/Autumn 2020 for an unknown period.

Sienkiewicza south to north and north to west to/from Uniwersytet

Previously only in use by diversions as in Summer/Autumn 2020 but the December 2023 UrbanRail map shows use by route 7, one curve in each direction to/from Uniwersytet that as at 28 January 2023 was SSuX school days only until 19:00, SSuO from 08:50 until 16:30.

Warsaw MZK:

A huge system with a strong possibility of rare sections in use at any time. More up to date timetables than linked from the route listings page can be located here. Any route in the list with a ! in a triangle is not running its normal route, routes 1 to 39 are regular, 40 to 49 run at certain times of the day or week (e.g. during peak traffic hours), with higher numbers special or substitute lines. Note that some of the entries below were as noted in October 2022 so the timings may now differ.

A route map dated March 2024 is here. Select any route and a stop list in one direction is loaded, the double arrow button changes route direction. Once loaded click on any stop name to display a list of journeys and those off route are suffixed with a letter or word. Select that trip and all its timings are displayed plus indicating from where the tram goes off normal route.

On stops before junctions there are arrows displayed alongside each route number to indicate the direction trams will take. Note if purchasing tickets by card from machines at stops that it will dispense a receipt first...

Pending loss of service

1. When the new 2.3km route from Szpital Wolski east to Reduta Wolska opened on 5 March 2024 route 10 was diverted to use it, leaving Kasprzaka/Szpital Wolski east to north and Metro Płocka south to west with no regular service. It is assumed but yet to be confirmed that use of these curves will continue by trams to Zajezdnia Wola as its access is between these two stops.
2. Metro Płocka east to south, the connecting line to Kasprzaka/Szpital Wolski and the also newly built north to west curve was planned to be used from 5 - 24 March by routes 26 and 27 as
3. if Metro Płocka via Elekcyjna to Reduta Wolska re-opens on 25 March 2024 routes 26 and 27 would resume running that way so there would then be no regular route use of the connecting line between Kasprzaka/Szpital Wolski and Metro Płocka. The triangle curves at both ends should see continued use by trams to Zajezdnia Wola, but a short section between the north and south curves accessing the Depot will lose all service. However the visible timetables as at 19 March 2024 do not show routes 26 and 27 running via Elekcyjna but continuing via the connecting line from 25 March but there is no news article concerning its delayed re-opening.

Zajezdnia Wola north to west

  • In October 2022 from stop Młynarska to Rogalińska at 09:25, 09:40, 09:57, 18:16, 19:16 SSuX 19:49, 22:58, 23:08, 23:10, 23:17, 23:35, 23:37 Daily 23:28, 23:48, 23:58 SSuO on routes 20, 23 and 24. Note these will also use Metro Płocka east to south >>>

Metro Płocka east to south

  • <<< In addition to the journeys listed above via Zajezdnia Wola north to west, there are journeys only doing this curve from stop Zajezdnia Wola [East] on journeys to Rogalińska between 09:23 and 10:21 SSuX on routes 9, 13, 20, 23, 24 & 27 plus numerous journeys after 18:27 to end of service SSuX. At weekends only in the evenings after 19:37.
  • When a nearby 2.3km new route opens from Szpital Wolski - Reduta Wolska on 5 March 2024, routes 26 and 27 will be diverted via this curve until their normal route via Elekcyjna re-opens on 25 March 2024.

Szpital Wolski north to west

When the 2.3km new route from Szpital Wolski east to Reduta Wolska opens on 5 March 2024, routes 26 and 27 will be diverted via this curve until their normal route via Elekcyjna re-opens on 25 March 2024. After this date it is assumed the only use will be by trams accessing Wola Depot.

Metro Mlociny

The Metro Mlociny track layout is a diamond shape with triangles at the north and south apexes. Trams run anti-clockwise round the diamond. The arrival platform from the north (lines 2 & 6) is on the NW side and the main departure platforms are on the SE side. Lines 10 & 33 do almost a complete circuit on departure, with the exception of the NW - NE curve of the south triangle, which is done by line 2 (and probably 6) on departure from the single platform on the SW side.

Nowowiejska west to north

  • Some time after the December 24 map, SSuX rush hours only route 11 was re-rerouted via Nowowiejska and this curve as shown on the March 2024 map.

Nowowiejska west to south

  • from stop NIK towards GAJ Mokotow at 09:16, 09:29, 09:36, 10:13, 18:11, 18:29, 19:06, 19:17, 19:30, 19:32, 20:07, then intermittently until 00:23 SSuX, 19:09, 19:44, 19:47, 20:20 and a few from 22:27 SSuO on routes 1, 7, 9 and 25

Note these journeys will also use Mokotow Depot approach north to west curve to Woronicza stop 10

Nowowiejska east to south

  • Was in use by diverted route 4 from 1 September 2022 until an unknown date due to a nearby street closure.

Pl. Narutowicza square & loop

A large square where East to South routes 15 & 35 split using opposite sides. There is also a large internal anti-clockwise loop used by route 11 and regular timetabled Route 1 short workings roughly every 12/15 minutes daily from stop Ochota-Ratusz. These arrive and depart from the same stop on the East side of the loop so are the only trams using three curves, on arrival west side north to east, and on departing back towards Ochota-Ratusz the east side south to west and north side east to north.

Radiowa south to east

  • route 28 from Dywizjonu 303 to Zajezdnia Wola at 18:16, 20:30 SSuX, 22:10, 23:00 SSuO

Rondo Waszyngtona east to north

  • route 9 from stop Berezyńska to Wojnicka at 23:57 Daily and from stop al. Zieleniecka 07 at 04:02 Daily, 04:22, 04:51 SSuX towards Rondo Wiatraczna

Rondo Żaba

  • Although an east to south curve and a turnback single track connecting loop towards Bródnowska exist and did see use for a short period a few years ago, trams terminating here must use a separate stop in the central reservation of a busy dual carraigeway road rather than the usual Rondo Żaba platforms which are north of the junction.

On a closure of part of the Annopol line in Summer 2023, the central reservation stop was used for just 24/25 June but from 26 June 2023 a press article stated that due to a perceived risk associated with passengers crossing this road, trams were only advertised to one stop short at Namysłowska [r 1] and Bródnowska [r 4] where trams swapped routes so it is not known if passengers could travel between the two stops. It was hoped to improve pedestrian access to allow trams to call as the Annopol closure continued until September 4 2023 but the on-line timetables as at 3 August 2023 showed route 4's towards Wyścigi using the rare curve in service but non-stop through the central reservation stop at Rondo Żaba, and no use of the single track connecting loop returning trams south.

Note also that Tourist Route T shown on the regular routes Timetable webpage was scheduled to use only the east to south curve on Saturdays & Sundays from 24 June to 3 September 2023.

Winnica

This northern suburbs terminus has different end points for each route. Route 17 uses a stop halfway round a sizeable loop whereas route 2 reverses in a headshunt beyond the stop on a separate spur.

Woronicza loop & North to East curve

The north to east curve [but not the loop] was in use for an unknown period from 1 September 2022 by diverted route 4.

The loop is situated just to the east of the grand junction at the Depot Access. Any tram terminating at Woronicza loop from the north as opposed to the adjacent Depot Zajezdnia Mokotów [see below entry] has its last and first stops after the east and north junctions respectively. Due to these stops straddling a very busy road junction passengers remained on board and travelled the complete loop to alight at the Departure stop. This was observed in October 2017 when an all-day route terminated at Woronicza, with a second route terminating from the east at a stop on the loop so used different curves on arrival and departure on/off the loop. Both had ended by at least Autumn 2020 and an October 2021 check of the stop on the loop showed no displayed timings.

Zajezdnia Mokotów approach curves to Woronicza stop 10

Any Zajezdnia Mokotów journeys must use one of three unusual curves at the nearby "Grand" junction to call at Woronicza stop 10 on the Depot approach line as all main route tram stops are after the junction. As at October 2021 they were:-

Wrocław: MPK

This should be treated as an indication of rare track seeing use over a period of years and NOT what is available now. Dates of use [where known] are quoted as a basis for travellers to make their own enquiries as Wrocław is a growing system of over 250 track km's with not just rare curves but connecting lines with no regular service, some used for just a few journeys a day. Wrocław was first databased following a visit in October 2015.

Timetable changes are frequent, so much so that the MPK map is normally not as up to date as the timetables where any route not running its regular route is "boxed" and highlighted, and route numbers from 70 are temporary. Also to note this map does not show connecting LINES with no regular service [i.e. some of the entries below], plus includes bus routes so is cluttered.

As an illustration of the frequent changes, on research for a visit later in the month eight rare sections were in use, but on arrival four had ended, and one went into daily use from 15 May 2023...

A new 3.5km line west from Dmowskeigo [renamed Kępa Mieszczańska] to Wejherowska used by new routes 18/19 linking with lines 31/32 towards Kozanów and Gornickza/Stadion Wrocław opened on 15 May 2023. Note the official map shows the gap between Kozanów and Gornickza now used by the 18/19 but this is incorrect as attempts to travel were refused. Other consequences are incorporated below.

To locate rare journeys, after drilling into the required route the page displayed will show both directions alongside each other. All off route journeys are shown with a footnote and then listed separately further down the same webpage. Alternatively select Wyszystkie Przystanki from an example route to reach a list of stops. Drilling down into this gives all departure times with off route journeys again having a footnote.

The entries are listed alphabetically to a nearby or last stop before any rare section. Any journeys travelling more than one section of rare track are hopefully linked by identical symbols to assist the traveller.

Tourist Route

With such a large system tours run as Route T SSuX by The Club of Urban Transport Enthusiasts in 2023 from 27 May to 3 September must be almost guaranteed to do some rare track. 2023 timetables here.

8 maja - Hala Stulecia

A connecting line between two branches in the north east of the City with triangular junctions at either end. This line was believed to have been in regular use for a period from 25 June 2022.

  • 8 maja north to south and Hala Stulecia north to east: Route 16 from Stadion Olimpijski to Zoo at 09:16 SSuX as at February 2022.

A traveller advises this tram arrives at Stadion Olimpijski as a terminating route 11, but does not use the loop but changes route/blinds after arrival so may not be initially obvious... These curves were previously in use by route 4 but only eastbound towards Wrocław Zoo for an unknown period in Summer 2020

  • 8 maja east to south and Hala Stulecia north to east: Route 16 from Sępolno to Zoo at 06:04 SSuX as at February 2022
  • 8 maja north to south and Hala Stulecia north to west: Last known use by clockwise route 0P for an unknown period from 22 August 2020

The line from the triangle junction north of Dolmed to Śrbowa was long term closed for engineering works and before then in 2015 this curve was only used by two pairs of Depot workings. From 30 October 2021 it is used regularly by route 20 which also run via the new east to north curve at Śrubowa.

Dyrekcyjna East to South

Use including three journeys from Sanocka to Tarnogaj at 13:57, 14:00 and 14:02 SSuX continues in May 2023 but check details as may not exactly match these times.

This is an alternative partly single track route of around 500 metres between Dmowskiego (renamed Kępa Mieszczańska on 15 May 2023) and Pomorska in the North west part of the City Centre including a river bridge 50 metres to the north of the usual tracks on the passing routes.

In 2015 and at least until 28 August 2020 it was scheduled for limited use, with trams arriving on one route, a layover and continuing as a different route. From 29 August 2020 no scheduled use could be found.

Piastowska north to east

  • This curve is single track so only possible in this direction. Note the platform at Rynek is on the curve so to ensure complete track coverage you must travel from Pomorska to Pl. Jana Pawła II. Was in regular use in 2015, but none in August 2020, October 2021 or from 15 May 2023 but had seen diversionary use earlier that month.

Stadion Wrocław

Route 31 can be advertised on trams and stops as running to Tarczyński Arena (Królewiecka) which is 200 metres before the Stadion. All services are worked by double ended trams so as there is no pointwork at Królewiecka, even if no event and all passengers have left the vehicle, they run to Stadion to reverse.

Note numerous other route 3 Depot runs go south to north at Głowny to and from the line of route at Galeria Dominikanska so August 2015 use of this curve eastbound was only confirmed by the driver manually changing the points.

Wrocław Nadodrze

There is a complicated circle of tracks with junctions around the Square outside the PKP station with routes approaching from four different streets plus a Depot exit. Illustrating this, in 2015 one timetabled Route 24 late evening service from Plac Staszica did a complete circuit anti-clockwise back towards Plac Staszica with booked calls at three different stops all named Nadodrze!

The rarest line is north to south on the east side with a triangle at each end as it has no stop on it. If a clockwise circular route OP tram is on driver change blocking the south side route, other services from Pl Staszica towards Słowiańska [the final stop for Zajezdnia Ołbin Depot journeys] have an alternative of running via the north side of the square via the curve from the west to the north side, call, then use a west to south curve onto the east side plus the east side north to south curve. This scenario happened on a Sunday evening journey towards Słowiańska on 18/10/2015. The north to south side of the triangle to/from Trzebricka has no service.

From 22 February 2022 for an unknown period the west to north curve to/from the north side stop at Wrocław Nadodrze is in use by diverted routes 1 & 8 to/from Pl Staszica.

  • In October 2021 routes 15 and 74 northbound from Dubois were diverted to Plac Staszica so the only option was an anti-clockwise circuit via the single track south to east, then the south side west to north curve to the east side, south to west to the north side, and finally the east to west curve towards Pl Staszica.

As at February 2022 of that combination only the single track south to east curve is scheduled by route 7 from Paulińska to Zajezdnia Ołbin at 23:08 SSuO

  • in reverse in October 2021 routes 15 and 74 from Pl Staszica only needed to use a single track north side west to south curve to head towards Dubois. This has no scheduled use in February 2022.
