It has been reported that passenger services to Koper will be withdrawn in the near future in order to create more paths for freight trains. The port of Koper is becoming busier owing to its being far more efficient than Trieste.

Proposals for a new line between Koper and Trieste (Italy) are being studied.
It is reported that passenger trains to restart on the Grosuplje – Kočevje  branch in 2020. Line re-opened to freight on 12 April 2019.

According to the German Railfans Society IBSE, the one train only service via the curve from Maribor Tezno – Maribor Tabor ran for the last time on 9 June 2017.

SŽ services between Sežana and Villa Opicina were reinstated on 5 January 2015, replacing substitute bus services following approval for the 312 'Desiro' units by the Italian authorities. The daytime service between Venezia and Ljubljana ceased to run west of Villa Opicina from 1 April 2008 because FS would no longer allow SŽ trains lacking the Italian train protection system to run on their lines. The train was cut back further to Sežana on 12 April 2008, leaving the overnight Venezia - Budapest train as the only cross-border service, but that was withdrawn in December 2011.

The following lines reopened at the timetable change on 14 December 2014:
* 32 Sveti Rok ob Sotli - Đurmanec (Croatia)
* 40  Središče - Macinec (Croatia)
* 40  Mursko Središče (Croatia) - Lendava

The following line lost its passenger service at the timetable change on 14 December 2014:
* 72 Prvačina - Ajdovščina

The 1km branch-line [[Slovenia - Lines with Obscure or Sparse passenger services#BTCCL|from Ljubljana Polje to BTC City Ljubljana]] opened in 2005 or 2006.
The cross-border service between (Metlika -) Rosalnice and Kamanje (Croatia) (- Karlovac) was reinstated on 15 December 2013, having lost its passenger service on 9 December 2012.

There are no longer any international passenger trains between Slovenia and Italy.
Services have been withdrawn, probably at the start of the 2013 - 2014 timetable, from the 1km branch from Ljubljana Polje to BTC City Ljubljana, which opened in 2005 or 2006.

The seasonal train from Ljubljana to Pula ( Croatia ) which used the border crossing from Rakitovec to Buzet ( Croatia) does not run in the 2012-2013 timetable, thereby closing this frontier to passenger services.
In February 2015 the Slovenian government submitted an application for EU funding for to build a 27 km line between Koper and Divača. The port of Koper is becoming busier owing to its being far more efficient than Trieste. There have been reports in the past that passenger services would be withdrawn to create more paths for freight trains but there is no sign of this as at February 2015.

The [Metlika] -Rosalnice - Bubnjarci HŽ  cross border line has no services shown as of 8th December 2012. However this has the case in previous timetables but services continued, the difference this time is that only 1 pair of trains from the Croatian side have sufficient running time from arrival and departure times at Bubnjarci to run cross-border so the actual position is not known.
Work is underway to reinstate passenger services on the 49km line between Grosuplje and Kočevje, planned to commence in mid to late 2018.
