Poland (North West) - Lines with Obscure passenger services

From EGTRE

Contents

Introduction

This list is based on the timetable from 10 December 2017 to 8 December 2018, but it should be noted it is completely reissued around four times per year, the current version covering from 11 March to 9 June 2018 plus there are frequent amendments within periods. Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information. Map references relate to the Polish Regional version of the European Railway Atlas 2016 published by M.G. Ball ISBN: 978-0-9955070-1-2 and the Mały Atlas Linii Kolejowych Polski 2011 published by Eurosprinter ISBN: 978-83-931006-3-7

Obscure services: Lines with regular use

Września avoiding line Gutowo Wlkp. (p.odg. Sokołowo Wrzesińskie) – Podstolice (Pd box)

[300] (ERA176B3/C3, D5) PL18/300

This east <=> west main line avoiding Września station is used by trains on table 300 shown as not calling at Września.

Poznań Franowo and area

Poznań Franowo is a large marshalling yard and depot on the south freight ring around Poznań. The lines through the yard area provide an alternative to passing through Poznań Główny station. Four different types of usage exist

  • Trains entering Poznań Główny from the north can continue without reversal through Poznań Franowo to the Warszawa and Inowrocław lines. This has been the major use in recent years.
  • As an alternative route to the Warszawa and Inowrocław lines if the lines from Poznań Główny to Swarzędz or Kobylnica are closed due to engineering work.
  • By Turkol steam excursions from Poznań Główny. Different options exist, but the most likely are ‘short’ circulars via Franowo and Poznań Wschód or ‘long’ circulars via Franowo and the northern freight ring to Kiekrz where they reverse. See Turkol
  • By Polish Woodstock festival specials to the festival site in Kostrzyn from the north and east and v.v.

Click on thumbnail for a map showing the lines likely to be used:-

Poznan.jpg

Within the Franowo area any Turkol anticlockwise ‘long’ circuit services can take different routes, either Line 352 on the north side of the yard, or lines 823/824, a south side route from p.odg Pokrzywno and a flyover to p.odg Stary Młyn. Line 352 on the north side runs via platforms used by staff trains prior to their withdrawal in approx December 2006 and all westbound or clockwise Turkol charters must take this route.

Poznań Gorczyn – Line 801 - Poznań Dębina - [Poznań Starołęka]

[300a] (ERA180C1, R10) PL18/301

Numerous Woodstock specials ran towards Jarocin via this route in 2017 and a similar pattern is expected in 2018. Note that special tickets are required for Woodstock trains. Woodstock specials may also run via this line and Franowo yard. See next entries.

Poznan Starolęka - Poznań Franowo - Swarzędz

[300a/360] (ERA180C1, R10&D4) PL18/302

Short term daytime use by one pair of IC's ended with the June 2017 PDFs. May be used by Woodstock specials to Kostrzyn from the Warszawa line (and v.v.), but the continuing closure of Poznań Główny to Konin (T300) will limit opportunities until 2019.

Poznan Starolęka - Poznań Franowo – Kobylnica

[300a/360] (ERA180C1, R10&D4) PL18/303

No recent use by trains to avoid reversal, but a possible route for Woodstock specials to Kostrzyn from the Inowrocław line (and v.v.).

Former Table 315: Częstochowa Aniołow/Herby Stare - Zduńska Wola Karsznice - Inowrocław/Bydgoszcz

Note the overnights in PL18/303A and 303B are NOT shown in the 315 Inowrocław - Kutno table.

Parts of this 250 km long north – south line (line 131) are currently in use for diversionary purposes plus overnights, some seasonal to the Baltic coast. The previously scattered EGTRE entries for line 131 and its numerous connecting lines have been grouped together from south to north.

(Kutno –) Kłodawa (p.odg. Zamków) – Lipie Góry (p.odg. Borysławice)

[B170, 300, 315] (ERA177A2 - A4; D7-D6) PL18/304

Part of the Poznań to Warszawa main line (T300) is closed, so until 8 December 2018 all trains between Poznań and Warszawa and v.v. are diverted via this curve plus PL18/305 and PL18/306, except for those international services starting or finishing in Moskva Belorusskaia.

Lipie Góry (p.odg. Borysławice) – Piotrków Kujawski – Inowrocław Rabinek

[B170, 300, 315] (ERA177A2 - A4; D7-D6) PL18/305

Part of the Poznań to Warszawa main line (T300) is closed so until 8 December 2018 all trains between Poznań and Warszawa and v.v. are diverted via this 73km section of T315 plus PL18/304 and PL18/306, except for those international services starting or finishing in Moskva Belorusskaia.

Inowrocław Rabinek – Janikowo (p.odg Dziarnowo)

[B170, 315, 430] (ERA177A4; D6) PL18/306

This line links line 131 [315] with the main line west to Gniezno.

Various parts of the Poznań to Warszawa main line (T300) are closed, allegedly until "Summer 2019", so all trains between Poznań and Warszawa are diverted via this curve and PL18/304 and PL18/305 except for international services starting or finishing in Moskva Belorusskaia which run via Ilawa [reverse]!

Inowrocław Rabinek – Inowrocław (Inowrocław Towawory) via Line 742

[315, 405] (ERA176C4; D6) PL18/306A

A route between Line 315 and Inowrocław station. Polish sources advise that services running at March 2018 calling at Inowrocław but NOT calling at Inowrocław Rabinek are using part of the Inowrocław avoiding line to go over the Poznań main line plus the connection to/from podg Mimowolo and Inowrocław Towawory as opposed to the previously used ground level line 742 on the south side of the main line. TLK 18103 did take this alternative on 18 April but additional reports would be appreciated by the Compilers.

Domanin (p.odg. Hanulin – Kępno (low level) (– Wielun)

[320/322] (ERA181C1, F6) PL18/307

Kępno is a two level station. The Poznań - Ostrów - Kluczbork line has high level platforms at right angles to the low level Herby Nowe line platforms. There are two north-to-east connecting curves between the two lines but only the 1.8 km outside curve (Line 812) connects the line from the Ostrów direction with the low level platforms; the other curve bypasses all platforms. All services to/from Ostrów Wielkopolski starting or terminating at Kępno use the north-to-east outside curve to reach the low level platforms. Details can be found in the station platform arrival/departure sheets using Peron II. The table 320 timetable PDF shows Kepno separately in italics at the top or bottom of the table (depending on direction) for starting or terminating trains.

Note that this curve is blocked by engineering work between 16 and 19/20 October 2018 and has no trains.

Only one train pair continues from Kępno Low Level to Wieluń Dąbrowa but see entry 18/307A for recent use of the station avoiding as an alternative routing.

Kępno station avoiding curve: Domanin (p.odg. Hanulin) – Wieruszow (podg Kępno Kp1)

[320/322] (ERA181C1, F6) PL18/307A

This north to east inside curve, shown as 'Direct curve avoiding Kępno station' on the map for the preceding entry, avoids all platforms. The TLK pair booked via PL18/307 is diverted via this curve for 2 weeks in November 2018 whilst the outside curve is out of use.

Sulechów (podg Czerwieńsk Wsch.) – Czerwieńsk – Przylep (podg Czerwieńsk Płd.)

[334, 355] (ERA175B2 partially shown, E2 partially shown) PL18/308

Almost all trains between Zielona Góra and Sulechów (- Zbąszynek) avoid Czerwieńsk by the south <=> east avoiding curve (podg Czerwieńsk Południe - podg Czerwieńsk Wschodnia) opened on 9 June 2013. The following are the only services still using the old line from the avoiding curve east junction to Czerwieńsk station which crosses underneath the Zielona Góra line to the south side of the two-sided Czerwieńsk station. Additionally these services also use a significant connection to/from the Zielona Góra line at the east end of Czerwieńsk station.

Gorzów Wielkopolski

[334/345] (ERA175B4 not shown, D2) PL18/309

Each line uses separate parts of the station, passengers walking between them by subway. Any trains to/from the Międzyrzecz line platforms onto/off the Kostrzyn line(345) use a lengthy connection of over 1 km to the west and as at August 2018 the only platform open was on the Międzyrzecz side so all services were using this connection. Since the April 2017 engineering work closure between Gorzów Wielkopolski Wschodni and the main station, some but not all of the shuttles to/from Kosztryn have been locomotive hauled and noted using the Międzyrzecz platforms as running round is easier there so any reports appreciated from any later visits. There had been no scheduled PKP services using this connection since 2010 and since then it was only used by a few Turkol Charters.

Rzepin: Connection from Frankfurt (Oder) to Zielona Góra line

[355, 300, M103] (ERA175A3 not shown, D1 not shown) PL18/311

Rzepin is a two sided station with Frankfurt (Oder) to Poznań services using the north platforms and Szczecin to Zielona Góra services the southern platform. There are connections at each end of the station and the one between the Frankfurt (Oder) and Zielona Góra lines at the west end of the yard is a 0.5km link line as shown on the map below. The short eastern connection is used by numerous Woodstock specials.

Szczecin Główny eastern approaches

[361] (ERA170B4, R1) PL18/312

There are two alternative routes from Szczecin Zdroje (p.odg. Regalica) to Szczecin Główny. The shorter northern route runs via Szczecin Port Centralny station into the northern end of Szczecin Główny, and the longer southern route via p.odg. Dziewoklicz and p.odg. Szczecin Wstowo into the southern end of Szczecin Główny. Most IC services and a few PR services take the southern route and may be identified by a '<' symbol against Szczecin Port Centralny.

Szczecin Główny western approaches

[368, 369] (ERA170B4, R1) PL18/313

There are three possible routes from Szczecin Gumieńce to/from Szczecin Główny. From north to south these are: (a) a single track line via Szczecin Wzgórze Hetmańskie and Szczecin Pomorzany, (b) the usual single track direct line and (c) the double track southern loop via p.odg. Szczecin Wstowo - p.odg. Dziewoklicz - Szczecin Port Centralny. There was a short period of engineering work from July to (possibly) September 2017 with diversions via Szczecin Wzgórze Hetmańskie but in the 2018 timetable period all trains are via the normal route.

Szczecin Podjuchy - Szczecin Zdroje

[366, plus 361] (ERA170B4, R1) PL18/314

A summer train pair from Katowice to Kolobrzeg use this curve as well as two local trains with very limited dates of operation

Goleniów - Mosty direct

[375] (ERA170B1, B2) PL18/315

With the opening of the line to Port Lotniczy Szczecin Goleniów and a triangle serving it, there are limited services to/from Kołobrzeg not calling at the airport via the direct third side.

Obscure services: Lines used on an occasional basis

Former Table 315: Częstochowa Aniołow/Herby Stare - Zduńska Wola Karsznice - Inowrocław/Bydgoszcz

The whole of this 250 km long north – south line (line 131) no longer has a year round passenger services, but parts are regularly used for diversionary purposes and seasonal trains to the Baltic coast. Use is sometimes only identified from other tables. The previously scattered EGTRE entries for line 131 and its numerous connecting lines have been grouped together in this section from south to north.

Częstochowa Aniołow (p.odg. Wyczerpy) – Chorzew Siemkowice OR Herby Stare – Herby Nowe – Chorzew Siemkowice – Zduńska Wola Karsznice – Zduńska Wola

[315, 173, 175] (ERA182B4 to 177A5; D7,E7,F7) PL18/350

Częstochowa Aniołow via Zduńska Wola to Inowroclaw was used in 2016 by a pair of Turkol operated Pilgrim specials which must have used T315. Note on 173 there is a significant grade separated junction at p.odg. Wyczerpy, where the lines remain apart and on significantly different vertical alignments for 3 km as far as Rząsawa. On 315 there is a significant flying junction north of Herby Nowe with the southbound line from Chorzew Siemkowice climbing over the line from Kępno and the north and south tracks diverging by at least 1 km. No service is currently scheduled in 2018.
