Astara ADDY is the terminus of a 1520 mm gauge branch from Osmanli. Russian Railways is to build the Iranian section of the 167 km route between Astara and Rasht, with ADDY being responsible for the section within Azerbaijan. This will be 1435 mm gauge, as in the rest of Iran. Astara ADDY is likely to be equipped with both bogie changing facilities and an SUW 2000 gauge changer.
[D] This 10 km long dual gauge (1520/1435 mm) border crossing was officially commissioned on 25 December 2017 and is expected to carry traffic from February 2018. At present it is a dead end branch: construction of the Rasht - Astara IRIR line is expected to be completed in 2020. Astara ADDY will be equipped with bogie changing facilities and probably also an SUW 2000 gauge changer.

The 165 km line linking Rasht to the existing Iranian network at Qazvin was supposed to have opened by the end of 2014 but this is now expected in 2017. Construction of the Rasht - Astara line will begin in 2016 and finish in 2019. A groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the bridge over the river Astarachay, which forms the border, was held in April 2016.
