Introduction

This list is based on the timetable in force until 14 December 2013, unless otherwise stated. Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information.

In the heading to each entry the map reference for the line in the Schweers+Wall Eisenbahn Atlas (2007/2008 edition) is shown, in italic, in addition to the reference to M.G. Ball's European Railway Atlas.

Obscure services

Magdeburg-Buckau – Magdeburg Sudenburg

[310, 340] (28A2, 123C3) DE13/201

This south to west curve connects the Halle and Helmstedt lines, avoiding reversal at Magdeburg. The only passenger trains to use this line are:

FO IC1933 Oldenburg (Oldb) Hbf – 15:13 Helmstedt – Leipzig Hbf

Lutherstadt Wittenberg

[205, 216, 250] (29A1, 46C3) DE13/202

The Berlin – Bitterfeld and Falkenberg – Roßlau lines run parallel through Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The following uses the connection between the two north of the station:

FSO RE18523 Berlin Hbf – 01:08 SSuO Jüterbog – Halle (Saale) Hbf

Halle-Ammendorf – Halle Abzw. Ac – Halle Abzw. At - Leipzig/Halle Flughafen (Halle-Kanena)

[580] (42B3 not shown, 130D2) DE11/203

This south to east curve between the Merseburg and Leipzig lines is south of Halle (Saale) Hbf and avoids the need for trains to reverse there.

E1 FO IC2259 Köln Hbf - 16:38 Nordhausen - Leipzig Hbf

E1 12 July - 16 August 2013. On other dates the train runs via the main line via Weimar.

Stiege Loop (HSB)

[333] (41B3 not shown, 56B1) DE11/204

A balloon loop at Stiege enables trains to run between the Alexisbad and Eisfelder Talmühle lines without reversing. Sometimes passenger trains run round it. However, there have been regular occurances of locomotives running round the loop 'light engine' and of railcar drivers changing ends.
