Revision as of 22:08, 2 May 2014

Introduction

Spain does not necessarily change its timetables in line with other European countries. Individual regions not infrequently change their timetables on a date convenient for them. This list is based on the timetable in effect at 15 December 2013.

No official downloadable timetable is available for RENFE. However, a very good unofficial timetable in the former style used by RENFE has been produced by the enthusiast group "Docuferr"; see the General Information. However, note that this has not been updated since 2011 so is of use only as a rough guide. For up to date information, use the RENFE journey planner. Table numbers in this publication are prefixed as follows in the Obscure services entries below:

  • Larga Distancia (in purple)
    • I - Internacionales
    • R - Radiales, prefixed "LDR" below to distinguish them from Media Distancia
    • T - Transversales
  • Media Distancia (in orange)
    • A - Andalucia
    • CA - Cataluña
    • G - Galicia
    • L - Levante
    • R - Radiales, prefixed "MDR" below to distinguish them from Larga Distancia
  • Vía Estrecha [narrow gauge] (in blue)
    • R - Regionales, prefixed "VER" below to distinguish them from Radiales

In addition, each entry includes, where available, table numbers in the "European Rail Timetable" (formerly published by Thomas Cook), prefixed "ET", and a route number of the relevant RENFE Cercanias network. Standard abbreviations used are explained in General Information.

In the heading to each entry, the map reference for the line is to M. G. Ball's European Railway Atlas 1993. The additional map references - prefixed by 'ERA1' - refer to the European Railway Atlas 2008 (M.G.Ball; published by European Railway Atlas)

Obscure services

La Pereda Riosa – Soto de Rey

[MDR16, TCE685, Asturias C1] (3A3, partly shown; ERA1 20A1, not shown) ES14/1

South of Soto de Rey (El Portazgo) triangle, there are two separate reversibly signalled single tracks following different routes: the longer via the river valley, serving Olloniego station; the shorter via the 2.6 km "new tunnel" (number 83 bis) with no intermediate station. The longer route must be used by those Regionales and Cercanías C-1 trains booked to call at Olloniego; other trains tend to use the "new tunnel" route - although either route can be used if required for train regulation purposes.

Villallana – Ujo

[MDR16, TCE685, Asturias C1] (3B3, partly shown; ERA1 20A1, not shown) ES14/2

There are two separate reversibly signalled single tracks (without intermediate stations) following different routes: the original (and longer) via the river valley and the shorter via the 2.5 km "new tunnel" (number 81 bis) further west. Normally all northbound trains run via the tunnel, and southbound Cercanías trains via the old route.

El Berrón curves

(FEVE) [Asturias F5, F6] (3A3, not shown; ERA1 20A1, not shown) ES14/3

The Oviedo - Santander and Gijón - Laviana lines cross here on the level. Connecting curves exist in all four angles, although the east <=> south curve runs through the works and cannot be considered a proper running line. Two of the other three curves are used by regular passenger trains:

  • the west <=> north curve is used by services between Oviedo and Noreña (about half of these run to/from Gijón); look for services marked "(Semidirecto) Procede de Oviedo" or "(Semidirecto) Continúa a Oviedo". See also the direct Oviedo - Gijón services shown in a separate table.
  • the west <=> south curve is used Mondays to Fridays only by four Laviana - Oviedo round trips; look for Laviana services highlighted in green, denoting “Laborables de lunes a viernes” and marked "Procede de Oviedo" or "Continúa a Oviedo".

The north <=> east curve may be used on the day it runs between Candás and Luarca (and vv) by El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo, one of the Trenes Turísticos de Lujo, which runs between Santiago de Compostela and San Sebastian. However, the details are so vague it is not entirely clear which sections are covered by bus and which by train.

Llovio – Ribadesella Puerto

(FEVE) (4A2, not shown; ERA1 20A4, not shown) ES14/4

This branch is used usually on the first Saturday in August each year (but on 9 August in 2014) for an excursion Tren Fluvial from Oviedo in connection with the annual river canoe race - La Fiesta de las Piraguas - from Arriondas (starting at noon) to Ribadesella.

These trains are very popular: in 2010 the train consisted of 19 coaches. Prior reservation is essential as only passengers with special tickets are admitted to the train. Details of the train in 2012 are shown on Feve Informa.

Amorebieta Echano – Amorebieta Geralekua

(EuskoTren) (5B1; ERA1 22A1, not shown) ES14/5

Most trains to or from the Bermeo branch run direct to Bilbao and use the west <=> north curve avoiding Amorebieta Echano (the main line station). Early on Sunday mornings a two-hourly shuttle operates instead between Amorebieta Echano and Bermeo using the east-facing curve; for times see the EuskoTren website.

Altsasu – Altsasu-Pueblo

[T10, TCE653, TCE689] (6A1; ERA1 22B1) ES14/6

This north <=> east connection is used by trains between Pamplona and Irún.

533 Irún - 08:42 Altsasu - Barcelona Sants
SuO 10657 Irún - 14:37 San Sebastian/Donostia - Barcelona Sants
537 Irún - 16:13 San Sebastian/Donostia - Barcelona Sants
534 Barcelona Sants - 11:19 Pamplona - Irún
SO 10560 Barcelona Sants - 13:56 Pamplona - Irún
530 Barcelona Sants - 19:22 Pamplona - Irún

Altsasu avoiding line: Altsasu-Pueblo – Olazti

[T7, MDR27, TCE653, TCE689] (6A1, not shown; ERA1 22B1) ES14/7

This east <=> west connection avoiding Altsasu on the south side is used by trains between Pamplona and Vitoria/Gasteiz.

Redondela – Vigo Guixar

[G1, G3, I2, T1, T7, TCE680, TCE682] (7A3 - 7B3, ERA1 20B2; not shown) ES14/8

The new Vigo Guixar station, a temporary replacement for the existing and now closed Vigo terminus, lies on the goods branch to Vigo docks. It will be used for all services whilst the old station is converted into an underground through station.

O Porriño (Guillarei-Aguja km. 141.6) – Tui (Guillarei-Aguja km. 0.9)

(7B2, ERA1 20??) ES14/9

This curve avoiding Guillarei enables trains to run direct between Vigo and Porto without reversing.

León avoiding lines

Map references: (9B3, partly shown; ERA1 20B4, not shown)

The ‘Enlace Sur’ connecting line, opened in September 2008, links the Palencia (- Madrid) line with the Astorga (- Monforte de Lemos) line south of León by means of a triangular junction at each end. Owing to closure of León station and the main line west thereof for construction of the new station underground, trains are being diverted via the ‘Enlace Sur’. This will presumably continue until the line through León reopens on its new underground alignment; this was scheduled for December 2012 but there is no indication of its happening yet. The routes used by the diverted trains are indicated by letters in square brackets, which equate to junctions shown in the sketch map below.

León (Bif. Rio Quintana) - Cuadros (Bif. Asturias) via the ‘Enlace Sur’ and avoiding curve [A - B - D - E - G - H - J]

[LDR4, T6, T9, MDR16, TCE685] ES14/10

All Regionales trains between León (temporary terminal station) and the Oviedo line run via the north <=> west curve of the eastern triangle, the east <=> north curve of the western triangle and the north <=> south curve avoiding the former León station.

Sahagún (Bif. Rio Bernesga) - Cuadros (Bif. Asturias) via the ‘Enlace Sur’ and avoiding curve [A - B - C - D - E - G - H - J]

[LDR4, T6, T9, MDR16, TCE685] ES14/11

All Alvia services between León (temporary terminal station) and the Oviedo line back into and out of León, reversing at Bif. Rio Bernesga and running via the south <=> west curve of the eastern triangle, the east <=> north curve of the western triangle and the north <=> south curve avoiding the former León station, EXCEPT the following trains, which do not call at León and hence use only the route C - D - E - G - H - J.

FO 4151 15:45 Madrid Chamartin - Gijon
SuO 4160 Gijon - 16:32 Oviedo - Madrid Chamartin
SuO 4380 Gijon - 17:49 Oviedo - Madrid Chamartin

‘Enlace Sur’: León (Bif. Rio Quintana) - Qintana-Raneros (Bif. León) [A - B - D - E - F]

[LDR2, T2, T7, G3, MDR14, TCE682] ES14/12

All Regionales trains between León (temporary terminal station) and Astorga run via the north <=> west curve of the eastern triangle and the east <=> west curve of the western triangle.

This route is also used by

283 Bilbao Abando - 14:20 León - Vigo Guixar

and presumably also (confirmation of this routing would be welcomed by the compilers)

280 Vigo Guixar - 14:38 Astorga - Bilbao Abando

‘Enlace Sur’: Sahagún (Bif. Rio Bernesga) - Qintana-Raneros (Bif. León) [A - B - C - D - E - F]

[LDR2, T2, T7, G3, MDR14, TCE682] ES14/13

All Alvia services between León (temporary terminal station) and Astorga back into and out of León, reversing and running via the south <=> west curve of the eastern triangle and the east <=> west curve of the western triangle.

Segovia Guiomar (Bif. Cambiador Valdestillas) – Valdestillas cambiador de ancho – Valdestillas

[LDR3, LDR4, LDR6, TCE663] (10A1, not shown; ERA1 20C4, not shown) ES14/14

This 2 km connection between the high speed line and the broad gauge line south of Valladolid is used by some high speed trains between Madrid and Valladolid. These trains can be identified from the platform departure sheets at Valladolid Campo Grande by their use of the broad gauge platforms 3, 4 or 5. In general, if a northbound high speed train is booked to arrive in Valladolid less than 20 minutes after the departure of a southbound standard gauge train one of them will probably use the Valdestillas cambiador de ancho.

The following train has been booked by this route in previous years and was observed using this route in November 2013:

4167 Madrid Chamartín - 16:35 Segovia AV - Hendaye

The equivalent of the following trains were booked by this route in 2010:

SX 4181 Cadiz - 18:40 Madrid Chamartín - Gijon *

The following trains were booked to use platform 3 at Valladolid Campo Grande in November 2013 but there is some doubt because (i) their timings are very similar to trains using the high speed line all the way and (ii) train 4471 was observed to run via the high speed line and platform 1 at Valladolid Campo Grande in November 2013. However, train 4384 was observed using the gauge changer in October 2013.

4405 10:40 Madrid Chamartin - Vigo Guixar
SX 4471 17:00 Madrid Chamartin - Ponferrada
FO 4177 17:40 Madrid Chamartin - Irun
SSuX 4360 Ponferrada - 10:10 Valladolid - Madrid Chamartin
4384 Vigo Guixar - 16:13 Valladolid - Madrid Chamartín
SuO 4176 Irun - 19:18 Valladolid - Madrid Chamartin

Confirmation of these usages would be welcomed by the compilers.

Other Alvia services to destinations north of Valladolid use the cambiador de ancho north of Valladolid Campo Grande station.

Venta de Baños avoiding line: Palencia – Magaz

[T1, T2, T7, T9, MDR7, MDR10, TCE681, TCE689] (10B2, not shown; ERA1 20B5) ES14/15

This east <=> west line avoiding Venta de Baños on the north side is used by trains between Burgos and Palencia.

Venta de Baños – Magaz

[I3, I8, LDR6, T4, T11, T14, TCE689] (10B2; ERA1 20B5) ES14/16

This line is used by direct trains between Valladolid Campo Grande and Burgos which do not call (and reverse) at Palencia.

Miranda de Ebro avoiding line: Pancorbo – Haro

[T7, T9, T11, TCE653, TCE689] (11B3, not shown; ERA1 22B1) ES14/17

This west <=> south curve is used by trains between Logroño and Burgos which do not call at Miranda de Ebro:

921 A Coruña/Vigo - 02:15 Burgos Rosa de Lima (next day) - Barcelona Sants
922 Barcelona Sants - 01:05 Logroño (next day) - A Coruña/Vigo

Miranda de Ebro – Pobes

[LDR6, T1, T4, T10, T14, TCE653, TCE689] (11B3, not shown; ERA1 22B1, not shown) ES14/18

The branch from Miranda de Ebro to Bilbao forms what appears to be a conventional burrowing junction with the line to Irún but is in fact two separate single lines. Most trains are booked to use the south side platforms (and hence the "long" curve behind the depot and works and under the Irún line) but some are booked to use the north side platforms (and hence the "short" inside curve). The platform usage can be identified from the platform departure sheets.

However, it is not unusual for trains to use a platform (and possibly also the route) other than that booked.

Guadalajara Yebes (Bif. Cambiador Plasencia de Jalón) – Plasencia de Jalón cambiador de ancho – Grisén (Cambiador de Plasencia-Aguja km 308.6)

[LDR7, TCE650, TCE653] (12B1, not shown; ERA1 22C2) ES14/19

This connection links the high speed line west of Zaragoza with the ‘classic’ main line. It is used by through trains between Madrid Atocha and either Logroño or Pamplona not calling at Zaragoza.

Zaragoza avoiding line: Grisén – Cabañas de Ebro

[LDR7, TCE650, TCE653] (12B1-2; ERA1 22B2) ES14/20

This line links the Calatayud and Tudela de Navarra lines west of Zaragoza. It is used by through trains between Madrid Atocha and either Logroño or Pamplona not calling at Zaragoza.

Zaragoza (Bif. Huesca) – Tardienta

[LDR10, CA5, MDR23, MDR24, TCE654] (13A1-2; ERA1 22C2-B2) ES14/21

There is both a broad gauge and a standard gauge line between Zaragoza and Tardienta. The standard gauge dives under the broad gauge line at Miraflores (not shown in the Ball atlas) and then parallels it all the way as a single line on the west side. However, it takes a slightly different alignment at San Juan de Mozarrifar where a 2km long embankment and flyover carries it over the freight-only branch to the military installation at San Gregorio which heads westwards here.

The standard gauge line is used by the daily through train (2 trains on Fridays and Sundays) between Madrid and Huesca. All other trains use the broad gauge line.

Note that the Tardienta - Huesca line consists of a dual gauge single track.

Zaragoza avoiding line ‘Ronda Sur’ (standard gauge): (Bif. Moncasi - Bif. Canal Imperial )

[LDR10, TCE650] (13A1, not shown; ERA1 22C2) ES14/22

This 21km long line forms part of the Madrid - Barcelona high speed line, bypassing Zaragoza to the south. It is used by high speed trains between Madrid and Barcelona not calling at Zaragoza.

Lleida avoiding line: (Bif. les Torres de Sanui – Bif. Artesa de Lleida)

[LDR10, TCE650] (14A1, not shown; ERA1 22C3) ES14/23

This 14 km long line carries the Madrid - Barcelona high speed line to the south of Lleida Pirineus station. It is used by high speed trains between Madrid/Zaragoza and Barcelona not calling at Lleida.

[Martorell] – Castellbisbal (Castellbisbal-Agujas Rubi) – Castellbisbal-Agujas Llobregat – Rubi

[Barcelona C7] (16B2, not shown correctly; ERA1 22A5, not shown correctly) ES14/24

The north <=> east and south <=> east curves of the triangle shown in the Ball atlas south of Castellbisbal are in fact unidirectional running lines each of which forms a triangular junction (not shown) with the Barcelona - Castellbisbal - Martorell line, at least 2km from each other.

Trains towards Martorell use the east <=> north curve of the more northerly line; trains from Martorell head south towards El Papiol and then take the north <=> east curve of the more southerly triangle

Cantalapiedra avoiding line: El Pedroso de Armuña - Fresno el Viejo

[I8, T4, TCE689] (19B3, not shown; ERA1 20C4, not shown) ES14/25

This line, ca 2 km in length, bypasses a sharp curve west of Cantalapiedra station. The following trains do not call at Cantalapiedra and so are likely to use this route. Information on this would be welcomed by the compilers.

313/332 Irún/Madrid Chamartín - 00:11 Medina del Campo - Lisboa S A
18304 Valladolid - 09:57 Medina del Campo - Salamanca La Alamadilla
18310 Valladolid - 21:50 Medina del Campo - Salamanca La Alamadilla
310/335 Lisboa S A - 04:56 Salamanca - Hendaye/Madrid Chamartín
18316 06:00 Salamanca - Valladolid
18314 16:05 Salamanca - Valladolid

Monfragüe – Mirabel

[I1, MDR36, TCE677] (19A1, partly shown; ERA1 21A4) ES14/26

Most trains reverse at Plasencia, using the east <=> north and north <=> south curves west of Monfragüe, but these trains use the third (east <=> south) side of the triangle.

17194 Madrid Chamartín - 18:42 Monfrague - Badajoz
SSuX 17197 Badajoz - 09:43 Mirabel - Madrid Chamartín
SSuO 17199 Badajoz - 11:15 Mirabel - Madrid Chamartín

(Madrid Chamartín –) Fuente de la Mora – San Fernando de Henares

[MDR20, MDR21, Madrid C2, TCE651] (22A3-22B3; ERA1 23B5) ES14/27

This line is used by Media Distancia services between Madrid Chamartín and Guadalajara (mostly to/from Arcos de Jalón or Soria) not calling at Madrid Atocha Cercanías.

Local (Cercanías) trains normally run via Madrid Atocha and Vallecas. However, a limited number of additional rush hour trains run via Hortaleza. The "Consorcio de Transportes de Madrid" website gives the RENFE Cercanias timetables:

  • Go to www.ctm-madrid.es and click “English”;
  • In the "Transport Information" block, click "Suburban Rail" and select route C2 from the list;
  • Click "Departure Timetables" or "Return Timetables " for the two directions;
  • Select trains in the block headed “Trenes CIVIS”.

Madrid Chamartín – Sol – Madrid Atocha Cercanías

(22A3, not shown; ERA1 23B5) ES14/28

This line via the tunnel opened on 9 July 2008 is connected to platforms 5 - 7 at Atocha Cercanías and to platforms 1 - 6 at Chamartín. Platform 5 at Atocha Cercanías and Platform 6 at Chamartín are connected also to ES14/29. It is used by all Cercanías services on routes C3 (Chamartín - Atocha - Aranjuez) and C4 (Colmenar Viejo/Alcobendas - Parla).

The routing of Regionales and Grandes Lineas services between Chamartín and Atocha Cercanías via either ES14/28 or ES14/29 is dependent on platform usage at both stations.

Madrid Chamartín – Recoletos – Madrid Atocha Cercanías

(22A3; ERA1 23B5) ES14/29

This line via the original tunnel is is connected to platforms 1 - 5 at Atocha Cercanías and to platforms 6 - 15 at Chamartín. Platform 5 at Atocha Cercanías and Platform 6 at Chamartín are connected also to ES14/28. It used by all Cercanías services on routes C2 (Guadalajara - Chamartín), C7 (Alcalá de Henares - Atocha - Chamartín - Principe Pio - Chamartín) and C8 (Atocha - El Escorial/Cercedilla).

The routing of Regionales and Grandes Lineas services between Chamartín and Atocha Cercanías via either ES14/28 or ES14/29 is dependent on platform usage at both stations. Alvia services that pass through the Chamartín cambiador de ancho must use Platform 15 at Chamartín and hence this route ES14/29.

Madrid Atocha Cercanías – Atocha cambiador de ancho – Madrid Puerta de Atocha

(22A3, ERA1 23B5; not shown) ES14/30

This line connects Atocha Cercanías to the Atocha gauge changer and thence to the Puerta de Atocha terminus. It is used by through Alvia services between Valladolid and the south of Spain, which take route ES14/29 between Madrid Chamartín and Atocha Cercanías. The trains propel in both directions between Puerta de Atocha and Atocha cambiador de ancho, where they reverse.

Museo del Ferrocarril (Paseo de las Delicias) – Bif. Museo – Madrid Santa Catalina – Villaverde Bajo – San Cristóbal Industrial

(22A3-22A2, partly shown; ERA1 23B5-C5, Museo del Ferrocarril - Bif Museo not shown) ES14/31

This line provides a link to the railway museum, the former Madrid Delicias terminus. It is used by the following trains:

  • The „Tren de la Fresa“ (Strawberry Train), which runs between May and October (but not in July and August) to Aranjuez.
  • The „Tren de Navidad“ (Christmas Train), which runs between 26 December and 5 January. In 2014 the train runs from the museum to Pinto and back.

Madrid Atocha avoiding line: Guadalajara Yebes (Vallecas A.V.-Aguja km 12.3) – Ciudad Real Central (Los Gavilanes-Aguja km 13.4: Bif. Valdemingomez)

Trains between Jaén and Córdoba use the west curve, whilst those between Jaén and Linares-Baeza use the east curve.

Antequera-Santa Ana / Bobadilla Area

Fuente de Piedra – Bobadilla (Antequera-Santa Ana Aguja km 50.4)

[T19, A3, A4, A5, TCE661, TCE673] (36A2, partly shown; ERA1 21C4, partly shown) ES14/40

There are two separate lines southwards from Fuente de Piedra:

  • the original western track (“Linea actual Córdoba - Málaga”)

This is used only by MD (broad gauge) services between Sevilla and Málaga.

  • the newer eastern track ("Eje transversal de Andalucia")

This line takes a straighter alignment, almost 1 km away in places from the “Linea actual Córdoba - Málaga”. However, trains using this line have, since an unknown date in Summer 2013, called at Antequera Santa Ana broad gauge platforms, using a loop line between Antequera-Santa Ana Aguja km 48.3 and Antequera-Santa Ana Aguja km 50.4. It is used by MD (broad gauge) Sevilla <=> Granada services. The southernmost portion between Antequera Santa Ana broad gauge platforms and Antequera-Santa Ana Aguja km 50.4 is also used by Algeciras <=> Granada services, which reverse at Antequera Santa Ana (broad gauge).
