Hungary - Lines with Obscure or Sparse passenger services
Introduction
This list is based on the timetable dated from 14 December 2015 to 10 December 2016, unless otherwise stated. The additional map references - prefixed by 'ERA1' - refer to the European Railway Atlas 2008 (M.G.Ball; published by European Railway Atlas).
Standard abbreviations are explained in General Information. The MAV timetable contains a number of non-standard notes; for details see General_Information - Additional Notes on reading the Timetable.
Obscure services
Almásfüzitő avoiding line: Tata – Almásfüzitő felső
[1] (42A1 not shown, ERA1 96B4 not shown) HU16/1
Almásfüzitő station is on a loop separated from the main line by some sidings. The avoiding line is used by trains not calling at Almásfüzitő.
Celldőmőlk avoiding line: Külsővat (Vinár elágazás) – Boba (Celldömölk-Rendezö)
[10, 25] (46B3, ERA1 96C2) HU16/2
This east <=> south curve avoiding Celldőmőlk was used last year by summer dated services between Győr and the Lake Balaton area. None is shown in the timetable this year.
Boba avoiding line: Kemenespálfa (Jánosháza elágazás) – Kerta (Kerta elágazás)
[20, 25] (46B3 not shown, ERA1 96C2) HU16/3
This south <=> east curve avoiding Boba is used by the following services:
IC958 | Budapest Deli - 19:25 Ajka - Zalaegerszeg

D | SuO | IC1951 | 17:16 Zalaegerszeg - Budapest Deli |
Érd felső (Érd elágazás) – Tárnok
[30a] (47B3 not shown, ERA1 99C4-3) HU16/4
This link between the Székesfehérvár and Sárbogárd lines provides an alternative to the Budapest - Székesfehérvár line via Erd alsó. Doubling of the latter route, completed in September 2013, has relieved the pathing pressures previously experienced, nevertheless this link is still used, both by an hourly local service between Kőbánya-Kispest and Székesfehérvár, and by a few other trains (those that have a timing or | marking at Érd felső). It should be noted that punctuality can affect the route taken by non-stop trains.
Kőbánya felső - Rákos (via low level tracks)
[30, 80a] (44B2 not shown, ERA1 99C4-5) HU16/5
This route from the south side of Kőbánya felső station to the north side of Rákos station via the low level lines was used last year by a summer dated service between Miskolc and the Lake Balaton area. None is shown in the timetable this year.
Budapest-Ferencváros - Kőbánya felső
[30, 80a] (44B2, ERA1 99C4) HU16/6
This east - west route avoiding Budapest Keleti was used last year by a summer dated service between Miskolc and the Lake Balaton area. None is shown in the timetable this year.
Dombóvár avoiding line: Dombóvár alsó – Kaposszekcsős (Dombóvár elágazás)
[40, 41] (47A2, ERA1 97B3) HU16/7
This west <=> south curve is used by trains between Kaposvár and Pécs which do not call at Dombóvár. The platforms at Dombóvár alsó are on the curve so trains which start/terminate/reverse here do not connect with the line towards Kaposvár.
E | 8803/18893 | Tapolca - 20:23 Kaposvár – Pécs
E | SuO | 18801 | Fonyód – 21:18 Kaposvár – Pécs |

[70, S3] (44B3-2, ERA1 99C5-B4) HU16/8
This route is used by all international services between Budapest Keleti and Slovakia, as shown in Table 70.
Cegléd avoiding line: Ceglédi szállások (Nyársapát elágazás) – Abony (Abony elágazás)
[82, 140] (48A3, ERA1 98C1) HU16/9
This east <=> south curve avoiding Cegléd is used by the following services:
D | FO | 1575 | Szeged - 14:28 Kecskemét – Miskolc-Tiszai |
D | SuO | 1576 | Miskolc-Tiszai - 19:01 Abony – Szeged |
Szolnok avoiding line: Abony (Paládics-puszta elágazás) – Abonyi út (Újszász elágazás)
[82, 140] (48A3, ERA1 98C5) HU16/10
This west <=> north curve avoiding Szolnok is used by the following services:
D | FO | 1575 | Szeged - 15:03 Abony – Miskolc-Tiszai |
D | SuO | 1576 | Miskolc-Tiszai - 18:40 Újszász – Szeged |

Eger-Rendező: Eger-Rendező elágazás – Eger-Rendező – Eger
[87a] (43A1 not shown, ERA1 98B2) HU16/11
The single line approaching Eger from the south splits significantly to serve a substantial goods yard [Rendező] and offers bi-directional alternative routes of around 2 km for arrivals and departures. Click on the thumbnail for a full size diagram.
The following services conflict with a train the opposite direction and take an additional 3 minutes between Maklár/Andornaktálya and Eger, so presumably take this route.
35500 | Füzesabony - 04:32 Andornaktálya – Szilvásvárad
S5500 | Budapest-Keleti - 06:58 Maklár - Eger |
