Austria - Tram services over obscure routes
Introduction
Some tram systems advertise their depot workings and enable one to ascertain the regular use by passenger-carrying services of junctions or sections of line that do not otherwise see public service. This occasional series lists such services that have come to notice. While the data for each system is current at the date stated, it is not the intention to endeavour to keep every entry up to date at every service change - the listing serves as a guide for travellers as to the sort of services they can look out for, enabling them to check current published timetable material at their time of travel.
To assist in tracing services, the route and/or timetable number for each journey is shown in parentheses, e.g. (1). Days of operation are in English notation (respectively: Su, M, T, W, Th, F, S) - plus "O" for only, "X" for excepted. Su (Sundays) usually includes public holidays in mainland Europe - but check locally.
Listings for other systems throughout the world - in the same format as shown below (please include date of timetable validity) - will always be welcomed.
Graz: AGB
A route map of Styria Zone 101 covering all Graz trams as at 30 November 2024 is here that also includes buses and rail services. Timetables are here. Diversion/disruption information was hard to locate so a link as at August 2025 is here.
The new relief/alternative line from [Hbf -] Roseggerhaus to Jakominiplatz is scheduled to open on 29 November 2025.
Jakominiplatz South to East
In use by diverted routes 4 & 7 from 24 May to a planned 7 September 2025 [inclusive].
When two route extensions opened on 26 November 2021, regular use on evenings, Sundays and public holidays by Route 13 ended, but the route 7 PDF suggested journeys departing LKH Med Uni / Klinikum Nord at 19:11 & 22:52 SSuX to Remise 1 Depot. The relevant stop at Jakominiplatz displayed no timings for services via this curve.
Jakominiplatz East
During the 24 May to a planned 7 September 2025 [inclusive] diversions routes
- 4 & 7 will use the short connection from Jakominiplatz south side towards Kaiser-Josef-Platz / Oper
- 5 & 6 will use the east to south connection from Jakominiplatz south side towards Dietrichsteinplatz
Köflacher Gasse north to west
A traveller in April 2023 noticed a tram on route 6 at its Smart City terminus displaying Alte Pöstraße as its final destination. This is the stop after travelling this curve, but the timetable panel suggested it would terminate at Daungasse, the stop before. So it is not confirmed if this curve can be travelled in service but timings from Smart City are 17.49 SSuX, 20.57, 22.26/46 daily.
Laudongasse street loop
The 26 November 2021 route changes ended regular use of this sizeable street loop.
Innsbruck: IVB
Timetables here and a map dated 15 December 2024 can be downloaded from the bottom of this page. For a Journey Planner see here.
Route 6 to Igls
This line had been under threat for years as by road is significantly quicker, but an hourly until 20:00 all days service has resumed. It had reduced to a SSuO and school holidays semi-museum tramway, plus one schoolday-only return journey departing Bergisel at 06:35 and Igls at 07:00, although with normal fares applying.
Note that return journeys from Igls by-pass the stop at Bergisel by joining the route 1 turning circle.
Terminal Marktplatz south to west only
Limited ex depot journeys on route 2 and 5 from Stubaitalbahnhof to Peerhofsiedlung or Technik West departing Bürgerstraße before 6am SX, or 8:30am SO.
Note no inbound workings at January 2025 as the west to south track, although planned, is not yet built.
Linz: Linz AG
Advertised journeys in timetables dated 1 February 2025. It would appear these can only be downloaded line by line and not just viewed from here. The Journey Planner links to Scotty.
Ferihumerstraße loop
The Gleisplanweb map shows a combined arrival/departure stop, and the PDF timetable for route 1 downloadable in August 2025 shows four scheduled arrivals/departures between 07:49 & 08:16 SDO. Helpfully the dates when these do NOT run are shown as 27.12.2024 - 03.01.2025, 17.02.2025 - 21.02.2025, 14.04.2025 - 18.04.2025, 07.07.2025 - 29.08.2025, 29.12.2025 - 05.01.2026. There are NO afternoon trams...
Neue Welt loop
The Gleisplanweb map shows a different combined arrival/departure stop on the loop, and the timetable dated 1 February 2025 for route 3 by footnote v² shows a departure from Linz Hbf at 07:18 "weiter bis Neue Welt" and the journey planner shows it arriving at Neue Welt [Schleife) at 07:27 and departing as a route 1 at 07:30.
Sonnensteinstraße street loop
The anti-clockwise Sonnensteinstraße street loop has triangular junctions at either end so trams can arrive and depart from and to each direction.
Wildbergstraße - Sonnensteinstraße
- No use shown in the February 2025 PDFs BUT, a journey planner enquiry shows all route 1 & 2's terminating on the loop from this direction after 15:00 and until 21:00 on Friday 12 September 2025...
Rudolfstraße - Sonnensteinstraße
- No use shown in the February 2025 PDFs
Trauner Kreuzung (P&R)
This one stop branch has no service after 20:00 [18:50 SO, 18:35 FO], or before 11:00 on Sundays
Wien: Wiener Linien
Wien (Vienna) has one of the largest tram networks in the world. Initial construction and subsequent expansion of the U-Bahn has seen several routes close, but there have also been extensions, with more under construction or planned. The system has a large number of nominally non-passenger connections of varying length. Many of these can be travelled on workings in passenger service.
Official network maps can be found (and downloaded from) here, the "Daytime network" map showing the entire local transport network in the city (trams, buses, U-Bahn and S-Bahn), although not lines carrying only off-route workings. It is very cluttered, but (in the December 2024 issue, at least) tram routes are shown with thin dark red lines and bus routes with thin dark blue lines; routes D, O and those with numbers (only) between 1 and 71 are trams, while local bus routes are given one- or two-digit numbers suffixed with a letter. A more useful map of the tram network is the Gleiplanweb track plan, to which all the entries below refer (including compass directions).
Official public timetables, in the form of stop departure sheets, can be downloaded from this page - click on the "Straßenbahn" tab for the tram routes. The timetables available will generally be those which are current, although revised timetables which are about to come into effect are also available for download. In the case of temporary timetables, their dates of operation are shown; all timetables have a date of issue (earlier than their validity) shown on the download page, and the timetables themselves have a "valid from" date but not a "valid until" date at the bottom of each page.
There is a PDF for each route, with each page showing the departures from a particular stop. These are identical to the timetables displayed at stops, so if there is more than one stop at a location (for example, on a loop for short workings, or where depot workings diverge from or converge onto the normal route) there will be separate pages for each. Many (but not all) timetable pages show the stop number ("Haltestelle") in the bottom right, and these usually appear on stop signs. Note that sometimes pages in the PDF (for converging off-route workings) may not appear in what looks to be their logical place. Short workings or those going off-route are indicated using either a box around the time or coloured highlighting, with a footnote to indicate the destination, and this makes it easy to find the times of many "TSUL" workings. Note that the destination displayed on off-route trams may not always be the name of the final stop (for example, depot-bound workings may display the name of the depot).
While all services are shown in the PDFs, on some routes this is only for the sections where they are still on their normal route. Some short workings continue in passenger service beyond the destination stated; the full journeys are shown in the journey planner (even if the off-route sections do not appear in the timetable PDFs). Identifying workings from depots is harder (especially using the timetable PDFs - you need to spot workings that suddenly appear at one stop having not been listed at the previous one, and then estimate a journey time), but, again, they appear in the journey planner. Using the ÖBB 'Scotty' journey planner rather than the Wiener Linien journey planner will allow only direct services to be listed if you switch on "Nur Direktverbindungen"; results might also be found more quickly if you click on "Weitere Optionen", and switch off all modes except "Straßenbahnen" (trams) and set "Fußweg bis Haltestelle" to "nein" (so no walking to stops). To input your origin and destination, start typing the name of the stop and then select the correct one from the list, making sure it has a tram icon (in a circle) underneath.
The operational day begins at around 04:00 and ends well after midnight. For the purposes of the notes below and to make it easier to follow, times between midnight and 03:00 are shown as a continuation of the previous day's service, so a "Saturday" time of 00:30 will actually be Sunday morning. If there is likely to be confusion, a note is added to clarify. Note that Sunday timetables apply on public holidays, and many routes have separate Monday to Friday ("Weekday" in the notes below) timetables for schooldays ("Schule") and school holidays ("Ferien"). Figures in parenthesis after listed times indicate the route number if there is more than one.
If attempting to travel any of the depot connections, it is worth being prepared to tell the driver the name of the stop at your destination (as shown on timetables, the Gleisplanweb maps, or as stated below) as it has been known for them to try to be helpful at the last stop before going off route (especially when heading for Btf. Gürtel) by saying it's the "Endstation" (last stop); a quick mention of where you are heading usually solves the problem, as it is not common to have passengers on these workings. It is also probably better to attempt to board the tram a few stops before it goes off route.
Except where stated, any times quoted below were extracted from timetables current on 1 September 2025 (including several routes with new timetables starting on that date). The new line to Hillerstraße (new route 12) also opened that day. It would be a massive task to keep it all up to date so this will not be attempted, but many of the times have hardly changed in more than a decade. The first section lists temporary regular use of normally "rare" connections (normally as a result of engineering work).
Note that this is not yet complete, with several entries still being put together. [Latest update: 2 Sep 2025, 01:00]
Summer 2025 diversions
- Closure of the south and west sides of the Ring (at different times), and replacement tram E4 during closure of part of the U4. Summary details can be found here.
- 28 June to 31 August 2025: Route D diverted via east and north side of the Ring (usual route is via the south and west sides), using the following rare connections:
- Schwarzenbergplatz north-east to south-east curve;
- Börse north-east to north-west connections: northbound, this is a simple curve; southbound, this involves running along a loop via Kolingasse and Peregringasse. They are also covered by temporary tram route E4 (replacing part of the U4), running between Schottenring and Nußdorf from 27 June to 31 August 2025 (timetable found under the U-Bahn tab on the website).
- 28 June to 31 August 2025: Route 71 only runs on its outer south-eastern section, between Enkplatz and the terminus at Kaiserebersdorf. It turns using the loop at Enkplatz, with timetables showing this being in passenger service. The terminus is on the loop.
- 1 July to 10 August 2025: Route 1 diverted via east side of the Ring (usual route is the long way round, via the north and west sides), using the following rare connections:
- Julius-Raab-Platz east to south curve;
- Schwarzenbergplatz north-east to south-east curve;
- Line along Lothringerstr. (between Schwarzenbergplatz and Resselgasse via Karlsplatz) - but note that trams in opposite directions will use track on slightly different alignments.
- 1 July to 29 July 2025: Route 2 diverted via west side of the Ring (usual route is the long way round, via east and south sides), using the following rare connections:
- Connecting line along Reichstratsstr. (between Rathaus and Schmerlingplatz, Volkstheater);
- Ring, Volkstheater south-west to north connections (note that trams in opposite directions will use track at opposite ends of the stop);
- Schwedenplatz area: southbound trams use north to west curve linking the Marienbrücke and Salztorbrücke stops, bypassing the Schewendenplatz stop itself; northbound trams take the single line north along Taborstr. after calling at Schwedenplatz.
- 30 July to 24 August 2025: Route 2 back mostly on normal route, but one slight diversion still in use:
- Connecting line along Reichstratsstr. (between Rathaus and Schmerlingplatz, Volkstheater);
- Connections from the circle at Volkstheater onto the southern part of the Ring (to / from Burgring) - note this is different from those in use from 1 July to 29 July.
- 28 June to 31 August 2025: Route D diverted via east and north side of the Ring (usual route is via the south and west sides), using the following rare connections:
- From 7 July to 22 August 2025, track reconstruction at Margaretengürtel and at the eastern end of route 18 sees route 18 suspended, route 6 diverted west of Eichenstraße to Dörfelstraße (near Bhf. Meidling), and route 62 diverted east of Kliebergasse (to partly replace route 18) via Hauptbahnhof, Fasangasse, Rennweg and Landstraße / Wien Mitte to Matthäusgasse. Summaries can be found here (route 6) and here (route 62). Rare connections in use:
- North to east curve at Dörfelstraße (part of a complete circle) by route 6 on arrival;
- Matthäusschleife (loop around several streets) by diverted route 62 (the Matthäusgasse terminus is on this loop).
- From 23 August to 31 August 2025 the reinstated route 18 is diverted at its eastern end to Matthäusgasse, using the Matthäusschleife (loop around several streets) as used by diverted route 62 over the previous few weeks.
- From 16 June to 31 August 2025, track reconstruction along Jörgerstraße sees route 43 diverted east of Rosensteingasse to the route 9 northern terminus at Gersthof, with route 9 not running north of Rosensteingasse. A summary can be found here. The only rare track is the south to west curve at Rosensteingasse, used by route 9 trams on arrival.
- From 1 Sep 2025, the temporary truncation of the eastern end of route 18 is extended to Sankt Marx (having been diverted during the previous nine days, and route 18 suspended completely for several weeks prior to that). Trams use the loop at Sankt Marx (along Leberstraße) in passenger service (and call at both Sankt Marx stops). This is in conjunction with the extension of route 18 at its eastern end. The end date is not known; at the time of writing there was nothing yet on the Wiener Linien website, and this was gleaned from the 'Scotty' journey planner.
Nordbahnstrasse east to north
From a June 2024 visit (to be updated using the journey planner):
- Route 0 from Bruno-Marek-Allee at 09:30, 20:30, 00:20 School days only, 20:41 SO, 20:59 SSuX, 21:11 SuO, 00:20/35/50 Daily. It is assumed these are to Wexstraße/Abstellanlage Brigittenau Depot so MAY also use the east to north curve at Klosterneuburger Straße / Wallensteinstraße
Abstellanlage Gürtel (Betriebshof Gürtel) depot access line, along the Gürtel to / from the south
Tracks run parallel with the southbound Währinger Gürtel (not named on the Gleisplanweb map), on the west side of the elevated U6, between the junction beside the Währinger Straße, Volksoper stops and the depot. Depot-bound trams terminate at a stop named Sternwartestraße, while outbound trams depart from one of two stops named Anastasius-Grün-Gasse (round the corner from each other, one in Anastasius-Grün-Gasse and the other parallel with Währinger Gürtel; all timetables quote the stop number 4708, but it is not known which stop this is, and when the compiler last visited neither had a timetable displayed, nor numbers on the signs). Trams can access and leave this route from two directions at its southern (Währinger Straße, Volksoper) end:
Via west to north curve at Währinger Straße, Volksoper (routes 40 and 41, common from Gersthof).
Note that the stops in both directions at Währinger Straße, Volksoper are on the depot side of this curve.
- Route 40 and 41 from Herbeckstraße and Pötzleinsdorf respectively shown as "über Währinger Straße, Volksoper bis Sternwartestraße" in PDFs. Gersthof times are shown below; departures from Herbeckstraße (40) are 4 mins earlier, and from Pötzleinsdorf (41) are 6 mins earlier:

Via south to north connection at Währinger Straße, Volksoper (route 42).
Note that there are stops for depot-bound trams at Währinger Straße, Volksoper both before and after the connection, but for trams leaving the depot it is only before it:
- Route 42 from Antonigasse shown as "bis Sternwartestraße" in PDFs:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 09:30, 21:42, 23:59, 00:30, 00:50

- Sundays / public holidays at 04:47, 05:48, 07:32, 09:53
Abstellanlage Gürtel (Betriebshof Gürtel) depot access line, along the Gürtel from the east (depot arrivals)
The arrivals and departures lines both run along Währinger Gürtel, but in the same direction as the road traffic and therefore on opposite sides of the elevated U6 - so they have separate entries. The depot-bound track is on the north side, and trams terminate at a stop named Marsanogasse, Bhf. Gürtel. Trams can access this line by three separate connections, all of which use different amounts of the line along the Gürtel itself, although only two appear to be used in public service:
Via north to west curve at Nußdorfer Straße (from Döblinger Hauptstr.) (routes 37 and 38 from the north; the two routes come together at Nußdorfer Straße, immediately before the curve):
- Route 37 from Hohe Warte shown as "bis Marsanogasse, Bhf. Gürtel" in PDFs:
- Weekdays at 21:30, 22:00, 00:14, 00:34, 00:54
- Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays at 19:59, 20:29, 00:14, 00:34, 00:54
- Route 38 from Grinzing shown as "bis Marsanogasse, Bhf. Gürtel" in PDFs:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 07:54 [only shown in JP], 08:47, 09:10, 19:00, 19:20, 21:48, 23:03; 00:24, 00:44, 01:04
- Weekdays (holidays) at 19:20, 21:48, 23:03; 00:24, 00:44, 01:04
- Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays at 20:18, 23:03; 00:24, 00:44, 01:04
Via connection from Liechtenwerder Platz (route D and route 1 from the south, and route D from the north via Augasse loop - for a summary of times from Liechtenwerder Platz, the use of the journey planner is recommended):
- Route D from the south (Absberggasse) shown as "über Nußdorfer Straße bis Marsanogasse, Bhf. Gürtel" in PDFs. Absberggasse times are shown; Liechtenwerder Platz times are about 41-42 mins later.
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 08:33, 18:41, 20:25, 20:55, 22:09, 00:02
- Weekdays (holidays) at 20:15, 20:35, 22:25, 00:02
- Saturdays at 22:25, 00:02
- Sundays / public holidays at 22:10, 00:02
- Route 1 from Prater, Hauptallee shown as "bis Börse" in PDFs (they also do the north-east to north-west curve at Börse - see separate entry); Liechtenwerder Platz times are about 26 mins later:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 20:11, 20:40, 22:06, 22:36
- Weekdays (holidays) at 20:30, 22:06
- Saturdays at 22:36, 22:51
- Sundays / public holidays at 22:20, 22:51
- Route 1 from Stefan-Fadinger-Platz shown as "bis Börse" in PDFs; Liechtenwerder Platz times are about 36 mins later:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 20:12, 23:44, 23:47 (not shown in PDFs), 23:59, 00:14
- Weekdays (holidays) at 20:52, 22:29, 23:44, 23:59, 00:14
- Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays at 23:44, 23:59, 00:14
- Route D from Nußdorf, Beethovengang shown as "bis Augasse" in PDFs, which run round the loop at Augasse (about 14 mins later than the times below) to turn round (see separate entry). [They are technically not through workings, so none will be found in the journey planner; to find them in journey planner, identify which southbound services terminate at Augasse (and therefore use the loop), which requires examining each entry: those shown (on 'Scotty' at least) as "Wien Augasse (Josef-Ludwig-Wolf-Park)" use the loop, the others do not.
From Nußdorf, Beethovengang:- Weekdays (schooldays) at 09:02, 22:05, 23:54, 00:09, 00:24, 00:39
- Weekdays (holidays) at 21:39, 23:54, 00:09, 00:24, 00:39

- Sundays / public holidays at 21:39, 23:54, 00:09, 00:24, 00:39
Via connection from Nußdorfer Straße - south to east curve then eastwards along the south side of Währinger Gürtel before looping back to head west on its north side.
This would be shown in the northbound timetables for routes 37 and 38, but no public workings are shown in PDFs, nor on the journey planner (search for Canisiusgasse - one stop south of Nußdorfer Straße - to Marsanogasse, or else you will get the workings coming from the north. During a period when a special service terminated here, it was used to turn trams but they ran empty round the loop and officials made sure all passengers had alighted.
Abstellanlage Gürtel (Betriebshof Gürtel) depot access line, along the Gürtel to the east (depot departures)
The arrivals and departures lines both run along Währinger Gürtel, but in the same direction as the road traffic and therefore on opposite sides of the elevated U6 - so they have separate entries. The outbound track is on the south side (although the first pick-up stop is on the north side, close to the depot), and trams start at one of two stops named Anastasius-Grün-Gasse (round the corner from each other, one in Anastasius-Grün-Gasse and the other parallel with Währinger Gürtel; route D timetables quote the stop number 4708 and routes 37 and 38 stop number 7524, but it is not known which is which, and when the compiler last visited neither had a timetable displayed). Trams can leave this line by three separate connections, one of which uses a longer stretch of the line along the Gürtel itself, but only two appear to be used in public service:
Via west to north curve at Nußdorfer Straße (routes 37 or 38 to the north)
Route 37 and 38 depot departures (to Hohe Warte and Grinzing respectively), from Anastasius-Grün-Gasse (stop 7524) (note that trams also pick up at the Nußdorfer Straße stop (stop 3709) immediately before the curve, 2-3 mins later):
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 04:42 (38), 04:57 (38), 05:06 (37), 05:12 (38), 05:17 (37), 05:20 (38), 05:27 (37), 05:36 (38), 05:37 (37), 05:47 (37), 05:50 (38), 06:01 (38), 06:33 (38), 06:41 (38), 06:49 (38)
- Weekdays (holidays) at 04:42 (38), 04:57 (38), 05:06 (37), 05:12 (38), 05:17 (37), 05:20 (38), 05:27 (37), 05:36 (38), 05:37 (37), 05:47 (37), 06:34 (38)
- Saturdays at 04:42 (38), 05:08 (37), 05:14 (38), 05:31 (37), 06:08 (37), 06:12 (38), 06:41 (38), 07:14 (37), 07:36 (38), 07:44 (37)
- Sundays at 04:42 (38), 05:08 (37), 05:14 (38), 05.31 (37), 06:09 (37), 06:17 (38), 07:39 (38), 09:45 (37), 09:56 (38), 10:14 (37)
Via west to south curve at Nußdorfer Straße (routes 37 or 38 to the south)
This would be shown in the southbound timetables for routes 37 and 38, but no public workings are shown in PDFs, nor on the journey planner (search for Anastasius-Grün-Gasse to Canisiusgasse - one stop south of Nußdorfer Straße - to Marsanogasse, or else you will get the workings heading north).
The curve itself has been known to be used during temporary timetables, with special services starting at the Nußdorfer Straße stop on Währinger Gürtel (just before the curve) and departing southwards (for example a temporary route E during the part closure of the U6, which ran round the big loop here to reverse). The layover point for trams was at the Anastasius-Grün-Gasse stop on the north (westbound) side of Währinger Gürtel, where boarding trams was permitted by at least one driver.

Augasse loop
Augasse loop can be accessed from (and to) both the north and south.
Arrivals from and departures to the south - route 33.
From 1 September 2025, the western terminus of route 33 is Augasse all day every day; until 31 August 2025, route 33 also ran to Josefstädter Straße and Augasse was only served after 19:00 on weekdays and at weekends. It is not known why this change has been made nor whether at some point in the future it will change back, but the route 33 timetable PDF from 1 September 2025 does not have an end date.
The official set-down stop is the main northbound stop (at the point trams run onto the loop), but trams layover at the stop on the loop and it is thought that in reality they run straight onto the loop. Reports of travellers' experiences would be welcomed.
Arrivals from and departure to the north - route D depot workings.
Augasse loop is used to turn trams running between the northern terminus of route D (Nußdorf, Beethovengang) and Abstellanlage Gürtel (Betriebshof Gürtel - Gürtel Depot) via the depot access line eastwards along the Gürtel (see separate entries). All are shown as "bis Augasse" in PDFs, but they then immediately form a working onwards, out of the loop. Using the journey planner to identify services using the loop is very hard but not impossible, requiring the examination of each service to or from Augasse: those using the loop are shown at "Wien Augasse (Josef-Ludwig-Wolf-Park)"; those which are shown otherwise do not use the loop.
- Route D from Anastasius-Grün-Gasse (stop 4708):

Börse loop and connections with the Ring
Normal usage here is that route D services use the south-west to north-west connection north of the stops on the Ring (19 northbound, 45 southbound). It is also used by any depot workings (to and from Btf. Gürtel) that run via the west side of the Ring.
North-east to north-west curve, coming off Ring (one direction) - the curve north of the normal stops on the Ring.
Several route 1 evening workings from Prater, Hauptallee (via the north side of the Ring) are shown as "bis Börse". These continue to Marsanogasse (for Btf. Gürtel), using this curve to access the course of route D (and then one of the connections to the depot later in the journey - see separate entry). Watch for "Marsanogasse" or "Btf. Gürtel" displayed on a tram or at a stop.
Departures from Prater, Hauptallee (times at Schottenring about 14 mins later):
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 20:11, 20:40, 22:06, 22:36
- Weekdays (holidays) at 20:30, 22:06
- Saturdays at 22:36, 22:51
- Sundays / public holidays at 22:20, 22:51
Loop (entering from the north) and north-west to north-east curve, going onto the Ring (one direction) - from the stop at Schlickgasse via the loop along Kolingasse and Peregringasse to the main Börse stop on the clockwise Ring (stop 19).
Several route 1 services at the start of service each day to Prater, Hauptallee first appear in the timetable at Börse. They originate from Btf. Gürtel, starting at one of the Anastasius-Grün-Gasse stops (it is not known which one), use the non-passenger connection along the Gürtel (see separate entry), and then follow the course of route D.
Times from Anastasius-Grün-Gasse (Schlickgasse times 12 mins later):
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 04:37, 04:47, 04:55, 05:01, 05:09, 05:17
- Weekdays (holidays) at 04:37, 04:46, 04:55
- Saturdays at 04:37, 04:55, 08:34
- Sundays / public holidays at 04:37, 08:55, 09:41
Loop (entering from the south) and north-west to south-west curve (one direction) - from the main northbound Börse stop on the clockwise Ring (stop 19), initially following the normal course of route D but turning left onto the loop along Kolingasse and Peregringasse, calling at a stop in Peregringasse, and then turning right back onto the Ring, but heading anticlockwise.
Potential use by any services coming north round the west side of the Ring shown as terminating at Börse and then going back south again - but no regular use is known (despite the Gleisplanweb map showing it as a passenger route).
Loop - entering from and departing to the north
It is possible to go round the loop without using the connections with the Ring. This could be used during times of disruption or planned engineering work, but no regular use is known.
Dornbach: connections between terminal loop (routes 2 and 10) and adjacent through lines along Dornbacher Str. (route 43)
Used by route 2 (and, potentially, route 10) depot workings to and from Betriebsbahnhof Hernals arriving or departing via the terminal loop, and (for a period) by route 43 services to and from Abstellanlage Ottakring (adjacent to the Joachinsthalerplatz stop on route 10). The connections for opposite directions are at opposite ends of the stops on Dornbacher Str.
West end connection - onto the loop
Route 2 depot workings from Btf. Hernals shown on Hernals, Wattgasse (stop 225), Hernals and Dornbach (stop 1349) departure pages in PDFs (there are none shown for route 10).
[In addition, during the period of several temporary timetables valid until 31 August 2025, there were four route 43 schoolday evening workings (between 19:29 and 22:14) shown as "über Liebknechtgasse bis Joachimsthalerplatz" in the PDF, heading for Btf. Ottakring (Joachimsthalerplatz).]
Note that the only stop shown on the Gleisplanweb map at Hernals, Wattgasse is the wrong (east) side of the depot, but Open Railway Map does show a stop west of the depot.
Times are shown for Dornbach (stop 1349, normally used by route 43 heading west to Neuwaldegg); departures from the depot stop are 3 mins earlier.
- Weekdays at 04:50, 04:57, 05:05, 05:12, 05:27, 05:39, 05:45, 05:57, 06:09; 06:33
- Saturdays at 04:50, 05:10, 06:19; 06:50, 08:48, 09:10, 09:32, 10:02
- Sundays / public holidays at 04:50, 05:10, 07:35, 09:22, 09:52, 11:10, 12:10, 12:40
East end connection - off the loop
No known scheduled use.
However, during the period of several temporary timetables valid until 31 August 2025, some early morning schoolday route 43 workings from Joachimsthalerplatz (coming from the adjacent Btf. Ottakring) were routed this way (others took a different route).
Note that, while the last few route 2 arrivals at Dornbach (daily at 00:01, 00:16, 00:31 and 00:44) do not return, the journey planner does not show them continuing on in passenger service; they actually set down at the stop in Paschinggasse (just before the connection, and on a different albeit parallel track), so do not even run all the way to the normal route 2 stop.
Rosensteingasse south to west curves
The northbound and southbound lines (route 9) run along different streets, so the curves for opposite directions are separate from each other and at opposite ends of the Rosensteingasse stop on the east-west route (43).
Used by trams heading to or from Betriebsbahnhof Hernals, as well as some route 43 trams between Abstellanlage Ottakring (beside the Joachimsthalerplatz stop) and the Neuwaldegg terminus. There are four stops at Rosensteingasse, and if closely examining timetables knowing which is which might be of use:
- 223 = westbound route 43 / southbound route 9 stop on Hernalser Hauptstraße
- 231 = eastbound route 43 stop on Hernalser Hauptstraße
- 549 = northbound route 9 stop on Taubergasse
- 4710 = southbound stop on Rosensteingasse (normally used only by trams coming off the west to south curve)
Any services which pass two of these stops will call twice, and will have two pages for Rosensteingasse in the PDFs.
West to south curve (one direction - heading south)
Workings coming out of Btf. Hernals heading south-east. Route 9 services are shown in the PDF (with a special page for Hernals, Wattgasse), but route 2 services are not. In addition, at times of temporary timetables, trams working other routes may be based at Btf. Hernals, and may or may not be shown in the respective PDFs (in summer 2025 there were many more workings via this curve).
Finding these workings in the journey planner is very difficult - either search for direct workings from "Wien Hernals Wattgasse" to "Wien Mayssengasse" and check the route is not via Dornbach (only usually necessary for route 2 workings), or search for direct workings between "Wien Hernals Wattgasse" and "Wien Rosensteingasse" and look for services using the "Wien Rosensteingasse (Nr.63)" stop.
Times below are for Hernals, Wattgasse, extracted from the journey planner for dates at the start of September 2025; those marked (2d) run south to Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz and then turn back north (both curves there are used all day by route 9) to head for Dornbach; the one marked (9j) also runs south to Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz and turns back north to continue as a normal route 9 working:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 05:00 (2d), 05:15 (2d), 05:15 (9j)
- Weekdays (holidays) at 05:15 (9), 05:48 (9)
- Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays at 05:13 (2d)
South to west curve (one direction - heading north)
Used by trams heading for Btf. Hernals. Includes northbound route 9 services shown as "bis Hernals, Wattgasse" in PDF. [No other services are known about, nor appear in the journey planner, but there may be others scheduled to run during periods where temporary timetables apply - such as during summer 2025.]
- Route 9 from Westbahnhof (Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz times about 15 mins later):
- Daily at 00:05, 00:20
- Weekdays (schooldays) also at 08:28
Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz north to west curve (that direction only)
No current (September 2025) use known, but in a timetable dated 16 June to 31 August 2025, used on schoolday evenings by three route 43 depot workings from Neuwaldegg to Abstellanlage Ottakring (Joachimsthalerplatz), shown as "über Rosensteingasse bis Joachimsthalerplatz" in the PDF or on the separate departure pages for workings to Joachimsthalerplatz (for stops from Rosensteingasse onwards).
Maroltinergergasse loop connections
This unidirectional (anticlockwise) loop is the terminus of route 44, and the normal mode of use is via the flat crossings of the north-south line along Maroltingergasse. Some terminating trams run to Joachimsthalerplatz (for Btf. Ottakring) in passenger service, using the west to south curve at the southern end of the loop, while some trams come out of Btf. Ottaking and run from Joachimsthalerplatz to Maroltingergasse in passenger service, using the south to west curve at the southern end of the loop
From the loop to Joachimsthalerplatz
From Maroltingergasse (stop 242 - the second one of that name, and last before the curve) - see separate pages in PDF:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 09:02, 09:53, 18:53, 21:44, 22:14, 00:21, 00:36, 00:51

Joachimsthalerplatz loop
This is adjacent to Abstellanlage Ottakring (Btf. Ottakring - Ottakring Depot).
Arriving from and departing to the north (normal route 46 usage)
Joachimsthalerplatz is the western (outer) terminus of route 46, and departing trams pick up at the stop on the loop (stop 1386), thus doing the northwards connection off the loop. Arrivals set down at stop 565 on Maroltingergasse, but then most continue, still with passengers on board, to the nominal pick-up stop (stop 1386) on the loop, thus doing the connection from the north onto the loop and most of the way round it; the exceptions are any trams going out of service (including those of other routes), which includes the last three arrivals of the day. Note there is a stop 565 departures page in the PDF for trams continuing onto the loop to the pick-up stop.
Arriving from the east
Depot-bound trams on any route, coming from the Hütteldorfer Straße direction and shown as "bis Joachimsthalerplatz" will run onto the loop using the connection from the east and terminate at a stop in the south-western corner of the loop (not shown on the Gleisplanweb map, but shown on Open Railway Map and visible in Google Streetview), just before the tracks into the depot diverge. These include:
- Route 10 from Unter St. Veit, Hummelgasse (Gutraterplatz about 20 mins later):
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 09:33, 10:03, 00:18, 00:33
- Weekdays (holidays), Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays at 00:18, 00:33
- Route 49 from Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse or Breitensee (stop on the loop, and indicated (b) below - also see separate entry), shown as "über Laurentiusplatz bis Joachimsthalerplatz". Hütteldorfer Straße (stop before the curve) times are shown; departures from Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse are about 13-15 mins earlier and Breitensee (stop on the loop) 2 mins earlier:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 19:08, 19:23, 20:21, 20:51, 21:24, 21:52, 00:24, 00:42 (b), 00:52, 01:00 (b)

[Note that the workings which first appear at Hietzing have come from the other end of their respective routes and turn using the loop (see the separate entry below for "Hietzing loop"); they are shown as "bis Hietzing" in the PDFs for the first leg of their journey, but the journey planner shows them as through workings.]
Hietzing times are shown below: those marked (10d) have come from Dornbach (departing there 23-24 mins earlier); those marked (10u) have come from Unter St. Veit, Hummelgasse (departing there 9 mins earlier); route 60 workings have come from Rodaun (departing there 26 mins earlier):- Weekdays (schooldays) at 19:52 (10d), 22:22 (10u), 22:27 (10d), 00:34 (10d), 00:35 (60), 01:03 (10u)

Hietzing loop
Note that trams run clockwise round this loop, the tracks swapping sides at either side of the loop in order that doors open in the centre (giving easier access to the U-Bahn).
North-east corner
Some workings to and from Abstellanlage Speising (Btf. Speising - Speising Depot) turn at Hietzing, using the northern part of this loop. This includes route 10 to and from Unter St. Veit, Himmelgasse and some route 60 services to and from Rodaun (there are also some which go direct). They are shown as "bis Hietzing" in their respective PDFs, but the journey planner confirms they are through workings and nominally call twice at Hietzing - first on the "Westseite" (but in reality they may just pass straight through without stopping) and then laying over for a couple of minutes on the "Ostseite".
- Route 10 from Unter St. Veit, Himmelgasse:
- Weekdays at 22:13, 00:54
- Saturday and Sundays / public holidays at 20:13, 20:43, 00:54

Hütteldorfer Straße north to west curve
Route 49 depot workings to Abstellanlage Ottakring (Btf. Ottakring - Ottakring Depot), adjacent to the Joachimsthalerplatz stop. Also use connections onto or off the Joachimsthalerplatz loop - see separate entries.
- Route 49 from Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse or Breitensee (stop on the loop, and indicated (b) below), shown as "über Laurentiusplatz bis Joachimsthalerplatz" in the PDF. Hütteldorfer Straße (stop before the curve) times are shown; departures from Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse are about 13-15 mins earlier and Breitensee (stop on the loop) 2 mins earlier:

Breitensee loop
Breitensee loop can be accessed from (and to) both the east and the west.
Arrivals from and departures to the east
Route 49 workings between Ring, Volkstheater and Joachimsthaler Platz (for Btf. Ottakring) use this loop to change direction (before or after using the north to west curve at Hütteldorfer Straße - see separate entry above). Their first legs are shown "bis Breitensee" in the PDF, and they then have a separate eastbound departure page for Breitensee in the PDF. The journey planner shows the outward legs as calling at Breitensee twice, the second time being at a stop it calls "Wien Breitensee Bahnhst (Ludwig-Zatzka-Park) (Bstg. Schleife)" which is not served by other services and is obviously the stop on the loop (in Drechlergasse), so it appears passengers are carried onto the loop as well as out of it; trams are scheduled to layover at this stop for a few minutes.
- From Ring, Volkstheater:
- Daily at 00:15, 00:34 (departing Breitensee loop for Joachimsthalerplatz at 00:40, 00:58)
- From Joachimsthalerplatz (to Ring:
- Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays at 04:51 (departing Breitensee loop for Ring, Volkstheater at 05:02)
Arrivals from and departures to the west
No booked services have been found.
Single line north along Taborstraße from Schwedenplatz
Route 2 tram bound for Friedrich-Engels-Platz (northbound / westbound) departing from the southbound / eastbound stop (1000) - has its own page in the northbound section of the PDF. (On the journey planner, look for a journey from Schwedenplatz to Karmeliterplatz that takes 2 minutes rather than 3 or more, and is only one stop rather than 2.) The tram has actually come from Abstellanlage Brigittenau (Btf. Brigittenau - Brigittenau Depot), running in passenger service from Wexstraße along the course of route 31 to Schottenring and then using the connection onto the Ring (see separate entry below):
- Daily at 05:10
Connection onto the Ring at Schottenring
This is the connection between Obere Donaustraße (route 31) and the Ring, immediately north of the Schottenring stop.
Used by a route 2 working from Abstellanlage Brigittenau (Btf. Brigittenau - Brigittenau Depot), which starts at Wexstraße (heading west) and follows the course of route 31 inbound towards Schottenring, then runs clockwise two stops along the Ring, in order to form a northbound departure from Schwedenplatz (to Friedrich-Engels-Platz - but departing eastwards rather than westwards, and using the single line along Taborstraße; see separate entry above). This last appeared in the timetable PDF in November 2008, but still appears in the journey planner. Departure from Wexstraße:
- Daily at 04:51
Note that on Saturdays and Sundays / public holidays there is also a route 2 departure from Wexstraße at 04:51 heading in the opposite direction and bound for Dornbach.
Bruno-Marek-Allee: north to west curve off the loop (one way)
Used by route O workings and some route 12 workings heading for Abstellanlage Brigittenau (Btf. Brigittenau - Brigittenau Depot). The route 12 workings have come from Josefstädter Straße (as short eastbound workings shown "bis Bruno-Marek-Allee" in the PDF), and turn on the loop in order to head back west. The route 12 workings are shown in the PDF, on the page for Bruno-Marek-Allee (stop 3447) to Wexstraße, but the route O workings do not appear in the PDF and can only be found using the journey planner. The journey planner will show all direct services from Bruno-Marek-Allee to Wexstraße, but only those originating from "Wien Bruno-Marek-Allee (Schleife)" start on the loop and do this connection.
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 09:29, 20:29, 20:59, 00:19, 00:34 (all O), 00:42 (12), 00:49 (O), 00:53 (12)
- Weekdays (holidays) at 00:42, 00:53 (both 12) [route O workings are not yet known, but there are likely to be several]
- Saturdays at 20:41, 00:19, 00:34 (all O), 00:42 (12), 00:49 (O), 00:53 (12)
- Sundays / public holidays at 21:11, 00:19, 00:34 (all O), 00:42 (12), 00:49 (O), 00:53 (12)
Note that the the journey planner incorrectly shows the route 12 workings listed above as departing from the Taborstraße stop (which is on the through route rather than the loop), but bringing up the schedules confirms they start here and must therefore use the loop (in agreement with the PDF). But be aware that there are some route 12 depot workings which originate at Hillerstraße and therefore do not use the loop (and are correctly shown).
Jägerstraße south to west curve
Workings to and from Abstellanlage Brigittenau (Btf. Brigittenau - Brigittenau Depot) routed via Brigittaplatz to or from Wexstraße, using special stops there immediately east of the depot, shown on neither the Gleisplanweb map nor Open Railway Map, but visible on Google Streetview. Note that there are two stops at Jägerstraße, before and after the curve.
- Eastbound route 5 from Westbahnhof shown as "über Brigittaplatz bis Wexstraße" in the PDF, and eastbound route 12 from Josefstädter Straße shown as "bis Wexstraße" in the PDF.
Jägerstraße (stop 2204) times shown; Westbahnhof departures (route 5) are 26-27 mins earlier and Josefstädter Straße (route 12) 20-21 mins earlier:- Weekdays at 22:11 (5), 22:45 (12), 23:52 (5), 00:48 (12)
- Saturdays at 20:47 (12), 21:11 (5), 00:18 (5), 00:48 (12)
- Sundays / public holidays at 20:46 (12), 21:11 (5), 00:18 (5), 00:48 (12)
- Route 5 to Westbahnhof and route 12 to Josefstädter Straße from Wexstraße:
- Weekdays at 04:47 (5), 05:15 (12)
- Saturdays at 04:47, 04:57 (both 5), 05:19, 06:39 (both 12)
- Sundays / public holidays at 04:47 (5), 05:19, 09:38 (both 12)
Note that there were previously route 33 workings to and from Btf. Brigittenau (shown in the PDF in the same way as for route 5 workings), but from 1 September 2025 they no longer appear to run.

Betriebsbahnhof Floridsdorf depot access line
Departures from Betriebsbahnhof Floridsdorf pick up at Floridsdorfer Markt stop 4717 on the depot access line, and departure is possible northwards or southwards. Depot-bound trams, however, set down at one of the stops before the curve so do no "rare" track.

Kagran: south side of loop (connection from southbound stop to northbound stop)
A number of northbound route 25 and 26 services (heading for Floridsdorf (25), Strebersdorf (26e) or Hausfeldstraße (26h)) come out of Btf. Kagran and then are shown to call twice at Kagran. The first call is at the souththbound stop (on the east side), and they then run round the south side of the loop to the northbound stop (on the west side). Hausfeldstraße-bound route 26 trams will then do the south to east curve at Josef-Baumann-Gasse (see separate entry). It is not known if the first call (at the "wrong" stop) is actually observed, but there are separate departure pages for these workings in PDFs for both routes, in the Floridsdorf- or Hausfeldstraße-bound sections:
- Weekdays (schooldays) at 04:14 (26h), 04:23 (26h), 04:32 (26h), 04:40 (25), 04:42 (26h), 04:50 (26h), 04:50 (25), 04:59 (25), 05:14 (26s), 05:34 (26e), 05:39 (25), 05:54 (26e), 05:59 (25), 06:05 (26h), 06:12 (26e), 06:34 (26e), 06:36 (26h), 06:50 (26e), 13:52 (26h), 14:08 (25)
