Introduction

This list is based on the timetable – Fahrpläne Österreich – dated from 13 December 2015 until 10 December 2016, unless otherwise shown. Standard abbreviations used are explained in General Information. In the heading to each entry, the map reference for the line in the Schweers + Wall Eisenbahnatlas Österreich (2010 edition) is shown in italic, in addition to the reference to M. G. Ball's European Railway Atlas. The additional map references - prefixed by 'ERA1' - refer to the European Railway Atlas 2008 (M.G.Ball; published by European Railway Atlas)

Obscure services

Wien Meidling - St. Pölten – Linz Hbf

[100, 110] (74A3 to 77A2 only certain parts shown; ERA1 64B1 to 65C5; 19B2 to 106A1) AT16/1

The Westbahn main line between Wien and Salzburg is being substantially upgraded. Fast lines, known as the Neue Westbahn, are in use for much of the way from Wien Meidling to Linz. For parts of the route they run adjacent to the old line, but there are substantial sections on entirely new alignments, including some long tunnels. The Neue Westbahn is in use thus:

  • Wien Meidling – Wien Hütteldorf: This section opened to passenger services in December 2014 and is entirely in tunnel. It is used by IC, ICE and Railjet services to Wien Hbf and Flughafen Wien. The connection from Wien Speising to Wien Inzerdorf currently has no booked services.
  • Wien Hütteldorf – St. Pölten: The section to Knoten Wagram, opened in December 2012, runs via a completely new route though Tullnerfeld. Between Knoten Wagram and St. Pölten there are four tracks in use on the same lateral alignment. There is a grade-separated junction at Knoten Wagram where the fast lines are in the centre at lower level, with the slow lines on outside at higher level, to allow access to the freight facilities on the north side. The entire route is used by most trains running non-stop between Wien Hütteldorf and St. Pölten, although some overnight trains still use the old route, and by those stopping only at Tullnerfeld.
  • Markersdorf a d Pielach (Üst Prinzersdorf 2) – Ybbs a d Donau: By passes all intermediate stations except Pöchlarn, where there are connections between the old and new lines. It is used by trains running non-stop between St Pölten and Ybbs a d Donau or calling intermediately only at Pöchlarn.
  • Ybbs a d Donau - Amstetten: By passes all intermediate stations and dives under the original route near Hubertendorf. It is used by trains not calling at any intermediate stations.
  • Amstetten – St. Valentin: Parallels the old Westbahn to St. Peter Seitenstetten, but then runs via an entirely new route to St. Valentin except through St.Johann where the new and old tracks are adjacent. There are connections between the old and new lines at St. Peter Seitenstetten and at St. Johann. This section of the Neue Westbahn is used by trains not stopping between Amstetten and St. Valentin.
  • St. Valentin – Linz: The Neue Westbahn follows a separate route from St. Valentin to Asten-St. Florian and then parallels the old main line into Linz. It is used by trains between St Valentin and Linz Hbf not booked to call at any of the intermediate stations.

Tulln avoiding line: Tulln Donaubrücke - Tulln Stadt

[112, 903] (75B3 not shown; ERA1 64B1; 23B2) AT16/2

This curve, together with the one in the following entry, had been used since the opening of the Neue Westbahn in December 2012 by one return service to Wien Westbahnhof. This has ceased but this curve only is now used by the following services:

21140 Stockerau – 17:00 Absdorf-Hippersdorf – Tullnerfeld.
SSuX 21142 Stockerau – 18:00 Absdorf-Hippersdorf – Tullnerfeld.
SSuX 21131 Tullnerfeld – 06:52 Tulln Stadt – Stockerau

Tullnerfeld avoiding line: Tullnerfeld Nord - Tullnerfeld Ost

[810, 110] (75B3 not shown; ERA1 64B1; 23B2) AT16/3

As mentioned in the previous entry, this curve ceased to be used by passenger services at the end of the 2015 timetable period.

St. Valentin avoiding line: Enns (Abzw St. Valentin 11) – St. Pantaleon (Abzw Mauthausen 1)

[100, 133] (74A3 not shown; ERA1 64B1; 19D3) AT16/4

This curve, opened in 2005, is used by trains shown in table 133 as running directly between (Linz -) Enns and Mauthausen.

Traun - Marchtrenk

[101, 140] (73B3 not shown; ERA1 ERA 62B5; 19A3 - 18D3) AT16/5

This route provides an alternative to the Linz - Wels main line, allowing slower trains to be overtaken. Trains using this route can be identified in table 140.

Lambach avoiding line: Gunskirchen (Abzw Umfahrung Lambach) – Lambach Markt

[101] (73B3 not shown,; ERA1 62C5; 18B4) AT16/6

A tunnel avoiding Lambach is used by all trains between Wels and Attnang-Puchheim not booked to call at Lambach.

Wörgl Kundl (Abzw Wörgl 2U) - Volders-Baumkirchen (Abzw FW2) (tunnel line)

[300] (71B1-79B3 not shown; ERA1 63A2-A1; 38C4-56C2) AT16/7

This line, opened in December 2012, can be used in its entirety by non-stop services between Wörgl and Innsbruck, these being most Railjet and all overnight trains, although it was originally understood to be used only by the former because of signalling issues. Services stopping at Jenbach but then running non-stop to Innsbruck can use the connections west of the station onto the new line, and indeed Inter-City services making this stop have been observed to do so, but further information on the use of this line would be welcome.

Bruck an der Mur avoiding line: Pernegg (Bruck Übelstein) – Oberaich (Bruck Stadtwald)

[501, 600] (75A1; ERA1 65A2; 66B2) AT16/8

This east to west curve enables trains to run between Graz and Leoben without reversal at Bruck an der Mur. It is used by services shown in table 600 as not calling at Bruck an der Mur.

Bregenz avoiding line: Hard-Fussach (Lauterach West) – Wolfurt (Lauterach Süd)

[401] (69B1; ERA1 62A1; 52B2) AT16/9

This curve enables trains to run between St. Margrethen and Feldkirch without reversal at Bregenz. There is no booked service but this route is often used for diversions when the Buchs SG – Feldkirch line is closed for engineering works. This has occurred for the last several years in late April and early May. Diverted trains may also use the Romanshorn avoiding line in Switzerland.

St. Michael avoiding line: Leoben Hbf (St. Michael Ost) – Kraubath (St. Michael West)

[600] (83A3; ERA1 65A2; 65D2-C2) AT16/10

This east to west chord of the St. Michael triangle enables trains to run between Leoben and Knittelfeld without reversal at St. Michael station. It is used by all trains between Leoben and Knittelfeld not booked to call at St. Michael, namely the two-hourly Railjet services between Wien and Villach and the daytime train each way between Wien and Venezia.

St. Michael – Kraubath (St. Michael West)

[600] (83A3; ERA1 65A2; 65C2) AT16/11

This north to west chord of the St. Michael triangle is used by the hourly local services between Bruck/Mur or Mürrzuschlag and Unzmarkt or Friesach, which reverse in St Michael station. There are no through trains between the Selzthal line and Knittelfeld.

Wien Penzing – Wien Speising (Abzw Wien Hütteldorf 1)

[110, 900] (77A2; ERA1 65C5; 106B1) AT16/12

This east to south curve connects Wien Westbf with the Wien southern ring line to Meidling and Kledering. In December 2015 all remaining Railjet, IC, ICE and overnight trains commenced running to and from Wien Hauptbahnhof on the Neue Westbahn route and, as a result, the curve now has only a few peak hour passenger services.

SSuX R2408 14:36 Wien Westbf - Laa an der Thaya
SSuX R2410 15:36 Wien Westbf - Laa an der Thaya
SSuX R2412 16:36 Wien Westbf - Laa an der Thaya
SSuX R2414 17:36 Wien Westbf - Laa an der Thaya
SSuX R2403 Laa an der Thaya - 07:04 Wien Speising - Wien Westbf
SSuX R2407 Laa an der Thaya - 08:16 Wien Speising - Wien Westbf

Wien Speising (Stw Maxing) – Wien Meidling (via Abzw Oswaldgasse)

(77A2; ERA1 65C5; 106B2-C2) AT16/13

This line is one of two routes between Speising and Meidling, and provides a link to the south (main line) side of Meidling station. Following the changes detailed in entry AT16/12, this route no longer has any booked services. This entry will be removed at the December 2016 change.

Wien Speising (Stw Maxing) – Wien Meidling (via Flohberg Tunnel)

[900] (77A2; ERA1 65C5; 106B2-C2) AT16/14

This is the more direct of the two routes between Speising and Meidling, and provides a link to the north side of Meidling station. It is used by the S80 [Unter Purkersdorf - ] Hütteldorf - Wien Hbf - Hirschstetten S-Bahn service (service hourly, increasing to half-hourly in peaks) and trains shown under Wien Penzing – Wien Speising.

Wien Matzleinsdorfer Platz – Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 3 and 4)

[900] (77A2; ERA1 65C5; 106B2-C2) AT16/15

The S80 [Unter Purkersdorf - ] Hütteldorf - Wien Hbf - Hirschstetten S-Bahn service uses this link to access platforms 3 and 4 at Wien Hauptbahnhof (service hourly, increasing to half-hourly in peaks).

Wien Meidling – Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 4 to 12)

[100,900 and others] (77A2; ERA1 65C5; 106B2-C2) AT16/15a

The main running lines pass either side of Wien Matzleinsdorf rolling stock maintenance facility at surface level. However, to enable westbound trains to the Inzersdorf Ort line (for Donauländebahn and Pottendorfer Linie) from Hauptbahnhof platforms 4 to 7 to avoid conflictions with inbound trains to the higher numbered platforms, a flyover crosses above the maintenance facility. It rejoins the inbound alignment at surface at 1,7km, to reach Wien Meidling platforms 7 and 8. This flyover is used by

  • the S60 Bruck an der Leitha - Wien Hbf - Pottendorf-Landegg - Wiener-Neustadt S-Bahn service (table 511)
  • the REX Bratislava Petržalka - Wien Hbf - Deutschkreutz service (table 512). Both are hourly SSuX, alternate hours SSuO.
  • the two outbound trains using the Inzersdorf Ort - Kledering line. In the opposite direction, these services use the surface level tracks.

Wien Stadlau (Erzkerzog-Karl-Strasse south junction) – Süßenbrunn (Abzw Süßenbrunn Ost)

[901] (77B3; ERA1 65B5; 105C2) AT16/16

Used by hourly non-stop trains between Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 3 - 12) and Břeclav or beyond.

Zeltweg – Fohnsdorf – Pöls

(82B3; ERA1 65A2 partly shown; 65A4-64C4) AT16/17

On Ascension Day (May/June) and the Saturday immediately following, a DMU shuttle service is operated between Knittelfeld, Zeltweg and Pöls (note: no access to train at Pöls). The dates for the 2016 event were not known at the time of writing, but are expected to be 5 to 7 May. The local museum has a homepage www.eisenbahnmuseum-knittelfeld.at, which contains pictures from previous years' events (see photos Andampfen).

Villach (Hbf Ostbahnhof) - Villach Westbahnhof (via high level line)

[651] (82A1 not shown; ERA1 63C5; 97C2) AT16/18

Most local services to Rosenbach, some of which start back from St Veit a d Glan or Feldkirchen, depart from Villach Hbf platform 8, which is situated on the high level route to Westbahnhof. These services can be identified from the ÖBB journey planner. (normally only westbound services use this route.) Click on the thumbnail for a full size map.

Ebenfurth avoiding line: Pottendorf Landegg (km 36,7) – Untereggendorf (Ebenfurth Stw 3 (km 39,4))

[500, 511] (75B2; ERA1 64C4; 35D3) AT16/19

The following train between Wiener Neustadt and Wien Meidling is timetabled to run by this route. It is shown in table 511 as not calling at Ebenfurth, so is assumed to use the avoiding line. This routing is generally to ease occupation on the Baden line during the morning peak.:

E EN1238 Livorno – 07:54 Wiener Neustadt Hbf – Wien Hbf Autoreisezug.

Inzersdorf Ort - Kledering

[720] (77B2; ERA1 65C5; 110D-111C) AT16/20

The re-routing of International services away from Wien Westbahnhof to Wien Hauptbahnhof means that this link line is used by only a few local trains shown in table 720 as calling at Meidling and Kledering without intermediate calls:

SSuX R7403 Wien Hbf – 06:21 Wien Meidling – Wiener Neustadt
SSuX R7405 Wien Hbf – 07:21 Wien Meidling – Wiener Neustadt
SSuX R7402 Wiener Neustadt – 06:20 Kledering – Wien Hbf
SSuX R7404 Wiener Neustadt – 07:25 Kledering – Wien Hbf

Unter Purkersdorf - Wien Hütteldorf

[110] (75B3 surface route only shown; 27D-110A) AT16/21

Trains between Purkersdorf Zentrum and Wien Hütteldorf not booked to call at intermediate stations use the tunnel route via Abzw. Knoten Hadersdorf, whereas stopping trains use the surface route via Hadersdorf-Weidlingau. This tunnel route interfaces with the Wien Meidling - St. Pölten – Linz Hbf main line at Abzw. Knoten Hadersdorf and trains between the Neue Westbahn and Wien Hütteldorf use the same eastern ramp.

Wien Hauptbahnhof (platforms 3 to 12) - Wien Simmering

[901,910] (77B2; ERA1 65C5; 111A) AT16/22

All departures to the line via Wien Simmering use a dive-under at the east end of the Hauptbahnhof, to avoid conflicts with incoming trains on the Ostbahn. The dive-under has two separate inward ramps - one from the lower numbered platforms, the other from the higher numbered platforms. The former tends to be used by the S80 [Unter Purkersdorf - ] Hütteldorf - Wien Hbf - Hirschstetten S-Bahn service (service hourly, increasing to half-hourly in peaks), the latter by other services - particularly the longer distance trains (including the outbound trains using the Wien Stadlau – Süßenbrunn line) - from platforms 9 to 12. Planned platform use can be derived from the ÖBB journey planner but is susceptible to change so departure screen information is the best guide. In the opposite direction, these services use the surface level tracks.
