Later modernisation work including electrification was undertaken and freight services resumed on 29 July 2022 and a five pairs daily passenger service between Szeged
and Subotica worked by both MAV and ŽS resumed on Tuesday 28 November 2023.

Line closed and lifted after World War 2. The railway bridge over the Tisza River in Szeged was destroyed, so the route lost its function.

The Hungarian Prime Minister has agreed to sign a contract with Serbia concerning the rebuilding of this line as part of an international project to recreate a rail link between Rijeka (Croatia) and Constanta (Romania). However, any actual work depends on European funding.
