Sweden - Lines with Obscure or Sparse passenger services

Introduction

This list is based on the timetable dated from 12 December 2011 – 8 December 2012 (Graphical timetable TRV T12) and the public timetables (available from www.resplus.se during the validity of the graphical timetable) unless otherwise shown. It is recommended that the instructions in Sweden - General Information are followed for details on how to obtain relevant timetables. Standard abbreviations used are explained in General Information. document.

The map references - prefixed by 'ERA1' - refer to the European Railway Atlas 2008 (M.G.Ball; published by European Railway Atlas); those prefixed 'ERA2' refer to the more detailed version which is to be released.

Obscure services

Ånge – Bräcke (Moradal) (via Ångebyn)

Available as an alternative to the north line, which is single track between Ånge station and Moradal. When trains are scheduled to cross within 6/7 minutes of Ånge, one would use this route - subject to punctual running of both trains.

Stockholm Syd Flemingsberg – Järna (Järna Jn.)

[60/61/80/81/114/115] (23B1; ERA1 1A4; ERA2 9B2 or 11A1-11A2) SE11/2

Main line trains use the new (1995) Grödinge line, while local services use the former main line between these points. Trains for the Eskilstuna line also use the Grödinge line, between Stockholm and Södertälje Syd.

Mora (Morastrand) – Oxberg

(14A2; ERA1 5B3-5C3; ERA2 8C4) SE11/3

This line has no regular passenger service but in recent years a special train has run between Mora and Oxberg in conjunction with a skiing event (see www.vasaloppet.se or www.sjevent.se) on or near the last weekend in February.

Gävle Central – Gävle Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum

(15A1 not shown; ERA1 6A2; ERA2 9B3) SE11/4

A short electrified branch provides access to the railway museum. Working involves reversal at Gävle C for trains from the south, then a shunt move to/from museum. When specials from Stockholm and Uppsala operate, normally on two weekends in the autumn, details should be available on the website www.jarnvagsmuseum.se when known. Look for headline "Årgångståget".

Järna – Norrköping (Åby)

Trains between Stockholm and Norrköping with no booked stops between Södertälje Syd and Norrköping usually run via Katrineholm. This is faster than the shorter route through Nyköping and is also double track throughout.

Grängesberg – Ställdalen (via Silverhöjden)

The former TGOJ line, which parallels the normal ex-BJ line, is available as an extended passing loop. It still has CTC, but the maximum speed is reduced. It can be used to avoid delays when crossing another train, subject to punctual running of both trains. Routing may be altered for operational convenience.

Malmö C (Lockarp Jn) – Trelleborg Train Ferry Berth

The last SJ Train Malmö - Berlin and v v operated 5 November 2011. Veolia has requested paths, and intends to start operation in April 2012.

Vännäs - Umeå (including north and south chords at Vännäs)

The north chord is used by night trains between Boden and the south seen in public timetable 40 calling at Umeå C, and trains not calling at Vännäs (=SSuX) in table 33 (to start 6 February) and table 34. Table 38 local trains Umeå Ö - Umeå C - Vännäs use the south chord.

Vännäs – Vindeln (Vännäs north Jn)

This section of the main line allows direct running between Boden and the south. It is used by night trains shown in public timetable 40 as not calling at Umeå C and/or Umeå Ö. For local train operation see comments under SE11/8 and public timetables 33 and 34.

Nyköping Södra – Oxelösund

(22B2; ERA1 5C1; ERA2 9B1) SE11/10

On one Saturday early in May each year (2010 date: 8 May), Grängesbergsbanornas Järnvägsmuseum (GBBJ) run a special veteran train shuttle service for a street fair at Oxelösund ("Oxelösund marknad"). Visit website www.gbbj.nu nearer the time for details. Note: Nyköping Södra is almost opposite the bus station.

In conjunction with this, the empty stock is moved from Grängesberg museum on the Friday and returns on the Sunday, using the following freight lines: Lindesberg (Frövi north jn.) – Valskog (Jädersbruk jn.), Mellösa (Flens övre jn.) – Nyköping – Oxelösund and route SE10/6. GBBJ have been prepared to carry passengers by prior arrangement - contact the Society well in advance, using this e-mail address.

Öre Älv (Vännäs)– Oxmyran (Mellansel) (via Nyåker)

The use of this route is planned to avoid time-consuming crossings. Routing can be changed for operational convenience. No passenger train is currently scheduled to use this route on a regular basis.

Malmö C avoiding line: Östervärn – Malmö Yard

Following the opening of the city tunnel in Malmö, no passenger train uses this route.

Halmstad (Eldsberga) – Hässleholm

This north-west – south-east link is used by SJ services between Malmö C and Göteborg. See public timetable 100.

Bollnäs (Ovansjö) – Bräcke (Moradal) (via Ångebyn)

A freight line, which is a short-cut just west of Ånge bypassing Ånge and Ånge yard.

Hallsberg – Skymossen jn (– Motala – Mjölby)

Degerfors (Laxå North Jn) – Laxå / Hallsberg

Trains listed in public timetable 70 use the north to east Laxå avoiding line. Trains listed in public timetable 78 use the north to west spur and call at Laxå station.

[Umeå C – Umeå Ö -] Örnsköldvik – Mellansel

[40] (7B1; ERA1 6B5; ERA2 4B2) SE11/18

Between the opening of the Umeå - Örnsköldvik section of the Botniabana on 28 August 2010 (see Sweden - General Information) and the opening of the second portion in August 2012, SJ is operating two overnight train pairs via this normally freight-only line, in order to access the Botniabana. When the southern section of the Botniabana (enabling direct access to Örnsköldsvik from the south) opens in August 2012, only trains 91/92 may be rerouted and using the Botniabana, while trains 93/94 most likely will use Mellansel – Örnsköldsvik until the new timetable December 2012, after which it probably will lose its passenger services.

Åstorp – Kattarp

No passenger train is currently using this route.

Malmö Area

Clarification of track usage in the Malmö Area:

• Malmö C – Ystad trains operate Malmö C – Hyllie – Svågertorp – Lockarp West Jn – Lockarp East Jn – Ystad
• Malmö C – Trelleborg trains Malmö C - Fosieby - Lockarp North Jn - Lockarp South Jn - Trelleborg (see SE 11/7 above).
• København H – Ystad trains (Swedish timetable 103) operate Lernacken – Svågertorp – Lockarp West Jn – Lockarp East Jn - Ystad. No other passenger trains use Lernacken – Svågertorp. This will leave Svågertorp – Fosieby without passenger traffic until “the Malmö circle”, where some trains currently terminating at Hyllie should continue via Östervärn to (and start from) the terminal section of Malmö C, starts. The date is not yet confirmed, as at least one new station close to the Rosengård area is to be built. No passenger trains are planned to use Lockarp West Jn – Lockarp South Jn until some commuter trains are extended from Hyllie to Trelleborg, probably in 2015. This chord is now completed and can be used and has also been used for engineering diversions of Malmö - Berlin trains.

Other sparse services

The following lines have few trains (relative to service levels generally in this country) - fewer than three trains each way on at least three days a week - or do not run each weekday
