Sweden - Lines with Obscure or Sparse passenger services

Introduction

To find current traffic information, always check your trip on a journey planner e.g. www.resrobot.se - see General Information: Journey planner. Trains shown in this Sparse/Obscure section may have been found in the information from Trafikverket when the timetable was set. An operator may choose not to operate a particular train (path) all days initially planned.

Warning: The sj.se journey planner is used a number of times below. Filtering has now been reinstated. For more information (e.g. dates) see General Information: Online Ticketing Systems.

The non-electrified DMU-operated lines have more replacement bus operation than the electrified lines. Check your departure station at Trafikverket before departure to ensure it is a train and not a bus. Stockholm C (Central) is the default. Type other stations at the very top of the page.

This list is based on the timetable dated 15 December 2024 – 13 December 2025 (Graphical timetable TRV T25) See available journey planners (above or under General Information) Standard abbreviations are explained here.

Map references for each route entry are given in parentheses ( ). References prefixed "ERA-E" refer to the European Railway Atlas (All-Europe Edition) by M.G. Ball. References prefixed "ERA-R" refer to the European Railway Atlas (Regional Series: Book 1) by M.G. Ball.

Obscure services

Numbered from the North to the South. On approximate the same latitude where possible also from West to East.

Vännäs area

[Old:35,40] (ERA-E 6B5; ERA-R 4B3-4C3) SE25/1

Only Vy night trains between Stockholm and Boden and beyond use the direct East to North chord (Vännäs avoiding line). All trains calling at Vännäs use the South to East and those en route to and from the north also the South to North chord (the latter is the initial main line).

[Stockholm C –] Bräcke – Vännäs – Umeå C / Vindeln [– Boden – Luleå/Narvik]

[Old:40](ERA-E 5C5, 6AB5; ERA-R 4BC3,4AB2,4A1) SE25/2

If there is major infrastructure work between Gävle C and Umeå C, the night trains may be rerouted to use the old (now freight only) route between Bräcke and Vännäs.

Whether any train re-routed this route will use the newer direct line or the original alignment through Nyåker is decided by the CTC operator during the actual night.

The now best way is to do a test using the www.sj.se/en journey planner .
1. Click Search Journey.
2. Type Stockholm C in the from box and Vännäs in the to box and select your desired date.
3. Click Search Journey again
4. Click Filter
5. Tick Only non-stop journeys.
6. Scroll down and click Done.
If you are able to see night trains with prices, they are bookable. You can easily click to select any of the close dates.

Night trains do not normally call at Vännäs, these are routed to use the East to North chord at Vännäs (Vännäs avoiding line).
When there has been infrastructure work between Vännäs and Boden, trains for Boden and beyond have been terminated at Vännäs but used the normal route via Örnsköldsvik and Umeå C. A train terminating at Vännäs has a stop at Umeå C, a train routed via this route does not.
No planned infrastructure work, which necessitates the use of this line for passenger services, is currently known, at least until 17 March.

Bollnäs (Ovansjö) – Bräcke (Moradal) (via Ångebyn)

[Old:20/42] (ERA-E 5C4; ERA-R 4A1) SE25/3

A freight line, which is a short-cut just west of Ånge bypassing Ånge and Ånge yard. It is normally used by trains not calling at Ånge, by freight and some Night trains. Trains 67 and 68 are SJ, use sj.se journey planner others are Snälltåget, use Snälltåget website. Snälltåget night trains may be not visible or shown as not selectable in the SJ Journey planner.

[Duved –] Ockelbo – Storvik [– Malmö C]

[Old:20](ERA-E 5C2-3; ERA-R 9A3-A4) SE25/4

No passenger train is currently using this route.

However, the Snälltåget winter sport trains winter 2025/2026 to and from Malmö via Göteborg may be routed via Kil and Borlänge during the comprehensive infrastructure (catenary) refurbishment between Göteborg and Alingsås. If so, the use of this line would be logical.

Gävle Central – Gävle Järnvägsmuseet

(ERA-E 6A2, not shown; ERA-R 9B3, not shown) SE25/5

A short electrified branch provides access to the railway museum. Working involves reversal at Gävle C (or a shunting move involving use of a section of the Gävle C avoiding line), for trains from the south, then a shunt move to/from the museum. When specials from Stockholm and Uppsala operate, normally on one or two weekends in the autumn, details should be available on the Museum website when known. Look for the headline "Årgångståget". The museum reopened to the general public on 29 June 2024. During the summer, a DMU shuttle service operates between the Museum and the Museum annexe (the train hall, which for enthusiasts is worth seeing). The Annexe is located on the Northwest side of Gävle C station (on the line towards Hagaström - Storvik), and has a small yard with a platform.

Grängesberg – Ställdalen (via Silverhöjden)

[Old:53,75] (ERA-E 5C2; ERA-R 9A2-9A3) SE25/6

The former TGOJ line, which parallels the normal ex-BJ line, is available as an extended passing loop. It still has CTC, but the maximum speed is reduced. It can be used to avoid delays when crossing another train, subject to punctual running of both trains. Routing may be altered for operational convenience.

The table here shows the most likely (but not guaranteed) trains to use this route.

D{1} SSuX 8189 [Gävle C – ] 13:38 Grängesberg – Ställdalen [ – Örebro C]
D{1} SX 8179 [Gävle C – ] 20:53 Grängesberg – Ställdalen [ – Örebro C ]

[Falun C / Borlänge C / Mora C –] Ställdalen – Hällefors – Herrhult – Daglösen – Kil [– Göteborg C] and [Falun C/Borlänge/Mora –]Ställdalen – Hällefors – Herrhult – Kristinehamn

[Old:75](ERA-E 5B2; ERA-R 8C2) SE25/7

Trains routed Hällefors – Herrhult – Daglösen – Kil use the East to West chord at Nykroppa.

D{1} SuO 17035 [Falun C – ] 15:27 Ställdalen – Hällefors – Kil [ – Kristinehamn]
D{1} SO 7066 [Kristinehamn – ] 15:37 Kil – Hällefors – Ludvika [ – Falun C]

Notes:
{1}: For dates of operation see TÅGAB timetable. Click on the line of interest. Please observe days of validity and days of operation.

Trains routed Hällefors – Herrhult – Kristinehamn use the East to South chord at Nykroppa. No passenger service is currently planned to use this route until after 17 March 2025

Trains routed Kil - Daglösen - Kristinehamn use the West to South chord at Nykroppa. This is rerouting to get stock back to the depot during infrastructure work between Kil and Kristinehamn. The replacement bus is substantially faster. No passenger service is currently planned to use this route.

[Falun C / Mora C) – ] Avesta Krylbo – Snyten – Ängelsberg – [Västerås C – Stockholm C]

[Old:50](ERA-E 5C2; ERA-R 9A2) SE25/8

The cut-off Snyten - Ängelsberg is used by the rerouted trains between Borlänge C (and beyond) and Stockholm C when Avesta Krylbo - Sala is closed for infrastructure work.

[Malmö C –] Mölndal – Olskroken [– Mora]

[Old:20](ERA-E 8A5; ERA-R 13C1) SE25/18

The Göteborg C avoiding line is closed for infrastructure work, construction of Västlänken(a dual-track tunnel enabling trains from Helsingborg - Varberg and Borås lines to access a new sub-surface four-track station under the existing Göteborg C station and continue towards Trollhättan or Alingsås without reversing. Snälltåget (Transdev) operates winter sport (Vasaloppet) specials which cannot use this spur, and are in spring 2025 routed via Göteborg C station, where the train calls and the locomotive runs round. When Snälltåget trains Stockholm C - Malmö C have been rerouted via Göteborg C (during infrastructure work on the normal route), it has also happened that the train has been routed to Göteborg Kville yard, and reversed into Göteborg C (no run-round necessary). The link Olskroken - Mölndal is expected to be reinstated late 2024, but no information has surfaced to confirm this. The new planned date for the sub surface station at Göteborg C is 2026 and for the entire West Link is now 2030.
