Introduction

WARNING

Because of a shortage of timetable planners at Trafikverket and the introduction of a new system called MPK, there are considerable delays in scheduling train paths. The published PDF timetables will therefore not be updated with further information for the 2023 (T23) timetable. Trafikverket will not issue the complete timetable all at once, but will update it continually during the year.

To find current traffic information, check your trip on a journey planner e.g. www.resrobot.se (or unless you plan to travel with Flixtrain or MTRX also www.sj.se/en)

The non-electrified DMU-operated lines have a higher percentage of replacement bus operation than electrified lines. The worst line is Linköping – Västervik, where on average the full train service runs on only one day in three. Check your train before departure to ensure it is a train and not a bus.

This list is based on the timetable dated from 12 December 2021 – 10 December 2022 (Graphical timetable TRV T22) and the public timetables (available from resrobot.se during the validity of the graphical timetable) unless otherwise shown. It is recommended that the instructions in Sweden - General Information are followed for details on how to obtain relevant timetables. Standard abbreviations used are explained in General Information. document.

Map references for each route entry are given in parentheses ( ). References prefixed "ERA-E" refer to the European Railway Atlas (All-Europe Edition) by M.G. Ball. Template:Map Refs ERA-R-NO-SE-FI-DK

Obscure services

Ånge – Bräcke (Moradal) (South of the depot)

[40(only when infrastructure work)/42/44] (ERA-E 5C4; ERA-R 4A1) SE22/1

Available as an alternative to the North line (also North of the depot) , which is single track between Ånge station and Moradal. When trains are scheduled to cross within 6/7 minutes of Ånge, one would use this route - subject to punctual running of both trains. The depot consists of a semi-roundhouse for locomotive maintenance and additional buildings for freight waggon maintenance. It is easy to find on a map like OpenStreetMap. To reach the platforms a number of points and diamond crossings in the Western part of the yard are used. There has not been any passenger trains scheduled to use the Ångebyn to Ånge gbg(yard) track, passing through Ånge gbg arrival sidings.

Stockholm Syd Flemingsberg – Järna (Järna Jn.)

[60/61/80/81/114/115] (ERA-E 1A4 OR &A1; ERA-R 9B2 or 11A1-11A2) SE22/2

Main line trains use the new (1995) Grödinge line, while local services use the former main line between these points. Trains for the Eskilstuna line also use the Grödinge line, between Stockholm and Södertälje Syd.

Mora (Morastrand) – Oxberg

(ERA-E 5B3-C3; ERA-R 8C4) SE22/3

This line has no regular passenger service but in recent years a special train has run between Mora and Oxberg in conjunction with a skiing event (see Vasaloppet or Snälltåget) on or near the last weekend in February. In 2022 Snälltåget (Transdev) has advertised a train on 25 February at 22:00 from Stockholm C to Oxberg. Note this train is open only to participants in this ladies-only skiing event.

Gävle Central – Gävle Järnvägsmuseet

(ERA-E 6A2, not shown; ERA-R 9B3, not shown) SE22/4

A short electrified branch provides access to the railway museum. Working involves reversal at Gävle C (or use of the freight only Gävle C avoiding line) for trains from the south, then a shunt move to/from the museum. When specials from Stockholm and Uppsala operate, normally on one or two weekends in the autumn, details should be available on the Museum website when known. Look for headline "Årgångståget". The date for reopening of the museum is currently not known, but work is now progressing and plans for a 2023 re-opening have been mentioned in the magazine of the Friends of the Swedish NRM.

Järna – Norrköping (Åby)

[80/81] (ERA-E 1A4 or 5A1 and 5C1; ERA-R 9A1-9B1) SE22/5

Trains between Stockholm and Norrköping with no booked stops between Södertälje Syd and Norrköping usually run via Katrineholm. This is faster than the shorter route through Nyköping and is also double track throughout.

Grängesberg – Ställdalen (via Silverhöjden)

[53, 75] (ERA-E 5C2; ERA-R 9A2-9A3) SE22/6

The former TGOJ line, which parallels the normal ex-BJ line, is available as an extended passing loop. It still has CTC, but the maximum speed is reduced. It can be used to avoid delays when crossing another train, subject to punctual running of both trains. Routing may be altered for operational convenience. Trains in the graphical timetable which cannot be found in the public timetable have been excluded from this list. It is possible that one in the public timetable advertised train # may - depeding on date or calling pattern - use a different underlying operational/technical train #, which is the number shown in the graphical timetable.

Vännäs - Umeå (including north and south chords at Vännäs)

[35,40] (ERA-E 6B5; ERA-R 4B3-4C3) SE22/7

The north chord is used by night trains between Boden and the south seen in public timetable 40 calling at Umeå C, and trains not calling at Vännäs in table 35. Table 35 trains calling at Vännäs reverse her and use the south chord.

Vännäs – Vindeln (Vännäs north Jn)

[35,40] (ERA-E 6B5; ERA-R 4B3) SE22/8

This section of the main line allows direct running between Boden and the south. It is used by trains in timetable 35 calling at Vännäs, but not trains to/from Umeå terminating in or starting from Vännäs. However, it can also be used by a night train not calling at Umeå C, when rerouted due to infrastructure work.

Nyköping Södra/Jönåker/Stigtomta/Vrena – Oxelösund

(ERA-E 5C1; ERA-R 9B1) SE22/9

On one Saturday early in May each normal year (2020 date 9 May was cancelled, no information on the web page of any train running in 2021), Grängesbergsbanornas Järnvägsmuseum (GBBJ), now in co-operation with Föreningen Sörmlands Veteranjärnväg (FSVJ) can be expected to run a special veteran train shuttle service for a street fair at Oxelösund ("Oxelösund marknad"). Visit the www.gbbj.nu or www.fsvj.se websites, or Visit Oxelösund nearer the time for details. Note: Nyköping Södra is almost opposite the bus station. In addition an EMU is expected to operate Oxelösund - Nyköping Södra a few dates not yet known, see FSVJ nearer the summer.

In conjunction with this, some empty stock is moved from Grängesberg museum on the Friday and returns on the Sunday, using the following freight lines: Lindesberg (Frövi north jn.) – Valskog (Jädersbruk jn.), Mellösa (Flens övre jn.) – Nyköping – Oxelösund and route SE22/6. GBBJ have been prepared to carry passengers by prior arrangement - contact the Society well in advance, using this e-mail address.

Bollnäs (Ovansjö) – Bräcke (Moradal) (via Ångebyn)

[20/42] (ERA-E 5C4; ERA-R 4A1) SE22/10

A freight line, which is a short-cut just west of Ånge bypassing Ånge and Ånge yard. It is normally used by trains not calling at Ånge.

[Stockholm C –] Arboga – Frövi – Örebro C [– Hallsberg]

[57](ERA-E 5C1; ERA-R 9A2) SE22/20

Trains between Örebro and Västerås/Stockholm or v v are rerouted via the older and longer route via Frövi, probably for capacity/operational reasons. No passenger trains are currently using this route.

[Stockholm C –] Bräcke – Vännäs – Umeå C / Vindeln [– Boden – Luleå/Narvik]

[40](ERA-E 5C5, 6AB5; ERA-R 4BC3,4AB2,4A1) SE22/21

If there is major infrastructure work between Gävle C and Umeå C, the night trains may be rerouted to use the old (now freight only) route between Bräcke and Vännäs.

This may shown in public timetable 40 as trains with no booked stops between Gävle C and Vännäs/Vindeln/Bastuträsk if the PDF is updated at all. Whether these trains will use the newer direct line or the original alignment through Nyåker is decided by the CTC operator during the actual night. The now best way is to do a test using the sj.se/en JP. You will see both Vy Luleå/Narvik and SJ Umeå trains here. 1. Click Search Journey. 2. Type Stockholm C in the from box and Vännäs in the to box and select your desired date. 3. Click Search Journey again 4. Click Filter. 5. Tick Only non-stop journeys 6. Scroll down and click Done. If you are abele to see SJ and Vy trains with prices, they are bookable. You can easily click to select any of the close dates.

Infrastructure work is planned and this line is to be used between 11 and 17 September 2022.

[Borlänge /Gävle – Örebro –] Hallsberg – Norrköping [– Alvesta]

[53B](ERA 9A1) SE22/22

This is the West to South Katrineholm avoiding line. It is again expected to be used for passenger trains while Hallsberg - Motala is closed for infrastructure work (double tracking between Hallsberg and Motala). Trains are rerouted to start/terminate in Norrköping instead of Mjölby. Table 53B is expected to be available closer to the relevant dates (mid-July to mid-August).Trains in table 53B are not to be listed here. However, trains in table 53 with numbers in the 28xxx range and operating dates mid-July - mid-August are likely to be the trains using this route.

[Göteborg] – Örebro/Västerås – Kilafors – Söderhamn – Sundsvall – [Umeå / Östersund – Duved]

[20](ERA 9A4) SE22/23

Kilafors - Söderhamn, which lost its passenger service in 1971, and which has been closed some years for substantial upgrade to be able to reroute freight and ease the overload on Gävle - Sundsvall. In 1971 the old line and the old station were used in Söderhamn. A new West to North Söderhamn (West/new station) avoiding line has been built and is used by the night trains. No passenger service except night trains is planned. Exchange of sleepers occurs in Sundsvall during the night, giving both Stockholm and Göteborg direct connection both with Duved and Umeå and v v. There is no passenger service on the West to South chord in Söderhamn.

D{1} 71/77 [Duved/Umeå C – ]0:14 Sundsvall C – Örebro C [ – Göteborg C]
D{1} 74 [Göteborg C – ] 22:53 Västerås C – Sundsvall C [ – Duved/Umeå C]

  • Åstorp - Kattarp has been reinstated for passenger traffic. However it is only used for the Night trains Stockholm - Malmö, and Inter City trains which are intended as relief trains for X2000. The mentioned trains make a detour via Helsingborg C on the route between Lund and Hässleholm, and times for Helsingborg C in table 80 have white background, not blue. All trains use the south to east Kattarp avoiding line. Infrastructure work (quadrupling) is ongoing Lund - Malmö, and double tracking is ongoing Ängelholm - Maria (the last station before the single track tunnel to Helsingborg C. All this work makes it necessary to look if a train is routed via Helsingborg a particular day.

Construction of a partially submerged (4-6 m) four track line started in 2017 and is ongoing. In August 2020 two temporary tracks on the east side of the construction area were brought into use. The old line had to be removed to enable the work on the new four-track line. The four track line is planned to be completed late 2023, probably with the new timetable in December. After this, the temporary line will be removed and the material reused elsewhere.
